There’s plenty of small reserves around East Auckland, and Stockade Hill could simply become a little number you just cut across to save time getting from A to B. Instead, it’s a place where East Auckland events are held throughout the year, whether it be small concerts, markets or festivals. I ventured here to get a taste of Carols by Candlelight last year, and found it to be a pleasant spot. They decorate a tree with Christmas lights, then the brass band performs underneath it. A great effect! The place is small, but inviting with a beautiful sea view to enjoy. It’s very chilly with a cold wind during the evenings, so be sure to pack a jacket if the sun is sinking below the horizon. This is not a place I’d recommend for a proper outing in the park, as there are plenty of better places for that. However, when there’s an event on, it’s a good venue to enjoy.
