Pukeko Bakery

I’ve driven past this bakery many a time and have always meant to go in as it looks like a great little place. So when I did, I wasn’t disappointed. The two staff were fantastic and really happy to explain what the pastries and breads on offer were and recommend some really nice treats. The coffee was great and the pastries to die for. Pastry and coffee combo is $ 7. Can’t recommend this place highly enough.

The smell of fresh bread dragged me in off the street. I followed my nose into Pukeko Bakery. While the street view of this bakery doesn’t look like much, its what they produce in this tiny little abode that’s really worth crowing about. It is rather cramped in here, but that sorta just adds to the charm of the place. It’s intimate for sure.
The San Fran Dourdough has to just about be one of the best loafs of bread around! I take it home and slather it in smashed avocado and couldn’t be happier.
These artisan breads are just seriously amazing. If if could work my bread maker as well as this place makes bread… Then well I wouldn’t be buying bread would I!
My only problem with the place is when I last when in and asked for a iced coffee they told me they don’t do iced coffee, which is a little strange. I mean its not hard. Ice and coffee.
That’s one tiny little complaint though in a sea of yummyness

A tiny little store, when you enter the aroma hits you first, there is nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread. There are wooden shelves lining the walls with loaves standing side by side and baskets up the front with French baguettes and epi loaves ready for the taking. First bread I bought from Pukeko was the dark German rye, fantastic, dense and full flavoured.
What is so special about Pukeko Bakery is the customer service. Being vegan I went and questioned the lady on the ingredients of various breads and she was able to tell me what I could and could not eat. Additionally you get care instructions for your bread! With the ciabatta, which is special because it contains both a little olive oil and honey. Not only does this give the bread a unique taste, I was informed by the French baker (probably the owner) that it keeps better, you can keep it in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Longest mine has ever stayed in the fridge is one week!
Their bakery is a bit out of the way for me, so I buy their breads from their stall at the Britomart farmers market. (they also do the Parnell French markets). Pukeko bakery is a must for those serious about their bread.

A wonderfully placed little café/​bakery, perfect for when you’ve been walking or cycling up Mount Doom, sorry Ayr Street, in the morning and feel like a little reward in the form of a pain au raisin and a coffee before work. To be honest, I’d keep going in there for the smell alone; that gorgeous aroma of freshly baked bread that makes me feel like I’m in a Parisian boulangerie every time it hits my nose. Pukeko gives you handmade bread and delicious pasties all handmade in their tiny little shop in Parnell.
I love that the staff in there are so friendly. Last time I was in there buying one of their artisan loafs (one of a huge selection of freshly bread in the store), the lady serving me said she had just baked a batch of new bread and gave me a free sample. It was just a great personal touch and one that ensures I will keep returning to Pukeko. The place also has a great selection of gluten free treats, quiches and scones.
