Burgers are beautifully crafted, fish sizes are one of the biggest I’ve had. They are a little bit more expensive than average shops but you get what you pay for. Great service and one of my favorite fish and chip stops!

I often think if I had a little business I would not have the premises on this little stretch of Great North Road. There’s a few businesses here and they are off the beaten track — Phillipes Patiserrie and Mr Vintage was here but they have sensibly moved on. So it’s an odd location no doubt about it but what of the food? I’ve just had fish and chips here the once as we were hanging out with my brother in law who lives nearby. It was reasonably good, it filled me up but was nothing special. If I was you and I was in the car, I would travel to Catch A Fish on the Gladstone Road. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again; it’s the batter that makes or breaks a good fish and chips. The batter here wasn’t quite crisp enough for my liking — I reckon if they added a drop of beer to their mixture, it would do the trick.

I’m sure there used to be more of these counter-to-the-road fish and chip places around; the fact that they seem to be disappearing is no doubt a sad indictment of society’s blah blah… Regardless, this is a fish and chip shop of an old-fashioned kind, and has been for a long time. The food is consistently good — not great, but always good — and the prices are pretty reasonable considering how close it is to Ponsonby Road. Well, I say it’s close to Ponsonby Road. The Chippery isn’t really that close to anything, and that’s its one major drawback. Because it’s not in a block of shops you can’t just casually stroll past it as you’re going to the dairy or whatever. You have to actively go here, and chances are if you’re worked up the motivation to do a mission here you’ll decide to use that energy to go somewhere more exciting.

Even city slickers and Grey Lynn yuppies need a fix of fish and chips every now and again and Newton Fish & Chipery is where they go to get it. It’s so funny seeing this slightly run down shop with flash as people standing outside. I can laugh, because I’ve been one of them! The fish and chips is pretty stock, standard and definitely does the job at delivering the good ol’ kiwi classic. It’s definitely not gourmet fish and chips but it’s not really yuck either. They have all the usual items; fish, hotdogs, spring rolls, and my favourite, the potato fitter. Being that there aren’t any other fish and chip shops around the area there can be a bit of a wait, so make sure you ring up and order first.
