A solid selection of tasty traditional Kyoto food, all designed to share. Our host suggested we try this restaurant, which is a tiny shop in a large shopping district. Upon entering the restaurant, we could tell we were not going to be disappointed. The cozy atmosphere makes you feel like you’re eating at your best friend’s mom’s house(assuming your best friend is from Kyoto, I suppose). We were seated at the table by the door, and were handed an English menu. We had no trouble ordering our customary draft beers as well as a couple of dishes, without initially understanding they were to be family-style. Our croquettes came out first, and were perfectly-done. Nice and crispy on the outside, with precisely-cooked potato on the inside. Next came my kara-age, which was the best I’ve had in Japan; the ponzu sauce was delicate, and the chicken properly tender. My companion ordered some manner of pork soup which, while the texture was unexpectedly viscous, was still quite tasty. I finished off my meal with the green tea rice with shredded nori, and have to say it was the most delightfully surprising dish I’ve had in a while. There’s not a lot to it, but it still manages to engage the taste buds and is a good way to finish off a meal. tl;dr: Go here. It seems to be still relatively obscure, but does not deserve to be so. You’ll be treated to a delicious meal, lovely service, and an culinary experience you won’t soon forget.
