Super Potato Akihabara

I HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone visiting Tokyo who enjoys classic video games. They have the widest array of retro gaming consoles, some I’ve only ever read about! Much memorabilia, thousands of games, and the top floor is full of arcade machines at 100¥ per play.
I spent a good 2 hours here today looking at everything. Worth exploring the alleys of Akihabara to find it.

If Super Potato was a country, it would be the place gamers go to seek political asylum. And if I had to choose between heaven and this place, I would choose this place in a heartbeat. It’s probably an understatement to say that there are enough video games here to keep one busy for a lifetime – and that’s just taking into account the NES. Along with the others, one could probably spend close to an eternity.
Dreamcast, 3DO, Saturn, Playstation, Nintendo 64, Super Famicom, Gameboy, NES… It’s all here. Three floors of retro gaming goodness, worth skipping school for, or church on a Sunday morning (or Saturday morning, depending on how much your childhood sucked as a child).
As is typically the case in Tōkyō, the staff are polite and willing to go the extra kilometer to help a customer. Which is awesome, because tryin’ to find anything in this place, is like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube in the dark, without hands. Game titles are organised by Japanese kana, which means most foreigners will find it difficult, if not impossible, to understand. (Which is totally fine, because, this is Japan, and not Europe, so yeah.) And even if you do in fact speak the language, you’ll get a kick out of watching the sales clerks effortlessly pull titles from all the places that defy both logic and rationale. REALLY?! Because EVERYONE knows «Double Dragon» comes right after «Final Fantasy» in video game language, right? Still, I love this place, and if you’re into video games, you will too.

This place is like retro video game heaven on earth. I didn’t know what this place was when I was walking around Akihabara, but I just followed the Doki Doki Panic (Super Mario Bros 2) music on the street to the second floor. They have classic games and memorabilia for almost every console. The only downside is when you don’t have enough space to take everything you want home. Also, they don’t deliver to America if you order online. Every retro game fan should visit Super Potato at least once in their lifetime.

It’s a retro games shop. Go through the Nintendo games. Get your pic with Mario. Smile at the feeling of being a kid again.
It’s a giant building with multiple floors. Hit them all. There is an arcade upstairs and you can also buy things like snacks (if you need some game food). We briefly browsed and bought nothing but I had a lot of fun walking through here. And also, I like saying the name: Super Potato!

Vintage gaming. If your looking for some old fashion retro gaming super potato the spot. They have the original nes snes Nintendo 64 sets dream cast Genesis and all the Japanese games you wish you could of had when you were a kid. But u couldnt cause u lived in the us

If you are looking for a retro game Mecca, this is it. It is a little off the beaten path on the 2^nd floor tucked away in between a few maid cafes.
The store is the 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th floors.
The 3^rd is everything Super Nintendo and back. They have some awesome titles and accessories that even the most otaku fan may not be familiar with.
The 4^th floor is play station 1 and up. My personal favorite is the japanese playstation sword controller I have never seen before…
The 5^th is retro games from arcades from street fighter 2 turbo to space invaders. Beware it does allow smoking on the 5^th floor but they also have otaku fan boy game snacks…

A really good place to visit if you’re interested in retro gaming. A little bit expensive in my opinion, but it’s worth a look!

This is heaven for any lover of retro gaming. They have every system, every game and everything is in perfect shape. The place has three different floors. The bottom one is for very old systems, such as the NES and the Super NES. The second floor is for newer stuff (but still retrogaming, you will not find new PS4 games here) and the third floor is an arcade room with old video games that you can play. In this floor they also sell drinks and snacks.
This location is the main one and it is usually packed with people. If you don’t care about the arcade room and you want to have a more relaxed experience, head to the Ikebukuro location. Same care for the games and systems, same prices but much less people.

I am a video game nerd, so this store was heaven, the Holy Grail, the Mecca for me. Im a huge old-​school gamer, and this place has ALL old school games. Virtua boy, famicom, super famicom, neo-​geo, CDI… literally any retro console that came out of japan along with an overwhelming amount of games. I spent way too much money here, and the only complaint I had was the games are severely overpriced. After shopping here, i went to Friends, Mandarake, and Trader and found many of the games i bought at super potato for half the price, sometimes even less. I will say that this is a retro game museum as much as it is a store. Whether you buy anything or not, you absolutely cannot miss this store if you visit Tokyo. There is large sign outside with Pacman on it out front, you have to go through a small corridor and take the elevator to the 3^rd floor. This is where all the main games are and the main consoles. The 4^th floor has some games also and tons of books and guides. The 5^th floor is a very small retro arcade. Do yourself a favor and visit super potato!!!

Retro games only. Mainly Nintendo. Some PS1−2 games but not much of a variety. Lots of Super Mario Brotherssss!!! They sell Knick-​Knacks as well, have a smoking arcade upstairs where they also sell snacks. A must see destination for Nintendo gamers.

this is such an awesome game/​toy store! i love the vintage games everywhere, the adorable themed candies, and the great souvenirs/​toys you can buy! not to be missed if you love some old school games. :)

OMG, this place is retro gaming heaven!!! Tons of shrink wrapped consoles from the golden age of 8-​bit gaming & up: Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Neo Geo, even the WonderSwan! Keep in mind these are JDM consoles requiring specific voltages, and not all hardware packages are complete: no controllers or connecting cables. There’s even an arcade upstairs!!!

I wish I had more stars to rate this place.
It’s seriously one of my favorite places I’ve ever been. The closest I can come to feeling oneness with the Japanese, among other hardcore Nintendo fans.
I spent a lot here — prices are pretty high, but the merchandise is so unique and curated that it doesn’t seem totally unfair.
Great place to get Animal Crossing toys, if you’re into that. They must be fans, as they had the original Dobutso no Mori playing in the museumy aisle.
One of the floors also had the most extensive collection of official game OST releases I’ve ever seen. Just a thing of beauty.
I could have spent SO much more time here. I wanted to look through every N64 game. I wished there were more than three floors.
On the top floor? Life-​size Solid Snake wearing a Mario hat. In a seriously wonderful moment, I realized that gamers all over the world would snicker at this — whether in Japan or elsewhere.
I walked out grinning so broadly that a guy on his way in couldn’t help but smile, too. Another customer from some far-​flung corner of the world unable to contain the happiness this place brings. If you are even a casual gamer and over 25, do not miss Super Potato!

If you’re looking for retro Japanese games, this place is an absolute must to visit. I spent plenty of time rummaging through old games, from classic NES (Famicom), to recent hits. Great variety, tons of merchandise, and reasonable prices.

Yes, the name of this business is «Super Potato». Yes, it is a retro video game store. If you are in Akihabara, chances are you’re here because you are into nerd culture. If, by some bizarre chance, you are just here by accident, then you should embrace nerd culture and start looking around. Super Potato is on the 4^th and 5^th floor of a totally inoccuous buildling, but they have both a placard on the side of the building and occasionally a sign on the street.
So, why should you come here? This place combines some of the best elements of Japanese culture together: video games (and their history), arcades, cleanliness, and organization. When you go to the main floor, you’ll find shelves upon shelves of shrink-​wrapped retro systems. These are NOT systems that are widely available in the US; when the US had, say, the Nintendo Entertainment System, Japan had the Famicom. We came here to gawk at things, but also to collect. All of the systems are incredibly well labeled, even in English (though limited), which is extremely important in places like this. Why? Well if you buy a system, you MUST have the power supply and the cables that go with it, especially if you live in a different country where this isn’t a dominant system. Some systems are complete, some aren’t, but they are priced and labeled accordingly. There are endless games, accessories, and some very rare items to look at as well.
Go up to the top floor for the arcade– it’s smoky and dark but there are some great games. I got to play a hard-​to-​find Pac Man arcade game here and all the machines are well kept. Prices are far, far below what you’d find online if you’re importing to the U.S., but I don’t know how competitive they are within Akihabara. I will add that there are absolutely NO refunds or exchanges and most staff speak absolutely no English. It is worth coming here just to gawk, and the surrounding streets contain plenty to look at, from robot shops to Maid Cafes. Go off the beaten path a bit and give this nerd metropolis a try.

Lo, and an Angel of the Lord came unto them. Suspiciously he looked much like Mario and the Pac-​Man ghosts. Though they cowered in fear of his magnificence he spoke «Be not afraid. The Lord has blessed you, for on this day a store is born. In the east you will find a tall building, and in this building you shall climb to the third through fifth floors. There you will find what you seek.»
And a choir of angels (or maybe it was a stereo) appeared behind him and began singing the Super Mario Bros. Bowser’s Castle theme.
They followed the sounds to a building twenty feet east, and did as the angel instructed. On the third and fourth floor they found aisles and aisles of old video games and systems thought to be long forgotten. This bastion of glory held many titles, even hard to find cartridges for Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, TurboGrafx, Playstation, N64 and Gameboy. The prices so low our travelers could fill their satchels full to the brim. Trinkets and toys join them, the frankincense to this gold and myrrh. The walls are adorned with advertisements of so many games past. Televisions displaying commercials and demos for the joyous tidings held within.
On the fifth floor was an arcade of games forgotten. A giant model stand-​up of Snake from Metal Gear and a human sized Game Boy adding to the radiance. All this leading to a throne made solely of Super Nintendo cartridges. For those gamers born in the 1980s or before, this is proof that there is a God.
