Waste of time. Accidentally went here instead of Al Molo. RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Good food, but not for that price.

My parents used to live a few doors down from this restaurant, and have since moved a couple of towns away. They still go back regularly(though not quite as frequently as they once did). The family that owns the restaurant always welcomes them very warmly & inquires as to how they are doing. Very friendly service. I try to come every time I am in the region. I can’t make too many menu recommendations because every time I come here, I get the same thing. This restaurant is home to one if the best Pasta allo Scoglios(Seafood pasta — clams, mussels & shrimp mostly) that I’ve ever had. On my most recent visit I started with a bufala mozzarella caprese salad(yum!!) and tried my friend’s porchini mushroom pasta, and both of those were fantastic as well. This restaurant has never disappointed me on any count. Good, though not speedy, service as everything is clearly made to order & not sitting pre-prepared on the kitchen. Friendly staff. Nice ambiance, though sadly some of the trees that they literally built the restaurant around(the large trunks go through the dining room & out the roof!) have died since I started coming here so there aren’t as many anymore. I have brought many friends here — Italians, Canadians & Americans — and everyone has always enjoyed it, and continued to talk about their meal there for years after. Oh, and on this last visit, upon hearing that my friend and I would be returning to the US soon, the owner’s daughter promptly went and brought us each a gift — a panoramic picture of the main square in Trieste in large magnet form — as a token of our visit. I was impressed that it was a nice picture, a good quality magnet(not cheaply made) and didn’t name the restaurant, so it was genuinely a friendly gesture and not a marketing/advertising ploy. I will undoubtably return on my next trip to the region.

This restaurant is right alongside the Adriatic, rather far from downtown Trieste, but near the ICTP. I had spaghetti pomodoro, which was quite good considering the simplicity of the dish.(I guess you really can’t screw up pasta in Italy the way you can in the US.) As always, it makes more sense to drink wine than water here, and the local wine did not disappoint. I came with a group and we had a leisurely meal where we talked for a long time, and I could tell the staff were getting frustrated dealing with us being the last people in the restaurant, but they weren’t rude or pushy about it. They were able to separate our meals so we all got separate checks, which was nice. It may not be worth the bus ride, or the 14 Euro cab ride from downtown, but if you’re checking out the Castello Miramare, or are staying at the ICTP Adriatico guesthouse and are tired of the cafeteria food, definitely stop by this restaurant!
