The original owner of Rome’s Alfredo’s Restaurant, Alfredo Di Lelio, is the originator of this 1914 delicious dish formulated for his pregnant wife who had to be enticed to eat. In 1950, with his son Armando, Alfredo Di Lelio reopened his restaurant in Piazza Augusto Imperatore n.30 «Il Vero Alfredo»(«Alfredo di Roma»), which is now managed by his nephew Ines Di Lelio, along with the famous«gold cutlery» donated in 1927 by the grateful American actors Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Fettuccine Alfredo is immensely popular all over the world and this is despite the fact that many recipes being used are not exact! The original pasta contained neither cream nor eggs. My brother Michael(center in picture) was a big fan of fettuccine as shown in this early photo. People go here for the Fettuccine Alfredo. Its recipe has stood the test of years and remians the worlds best. Hence the five stars.

Fan freaking tastic fettucine alfredo. Don’t expect great service and definitely go over your check with a fine tooth comb(ours had ~100 euros magically tacked onto it) but the food.. omg the food.

Amazing restaurant– this was actually where Fettucine alredo was invented! Great service, we did not have a reservation although it is recommended and truly had a great meal. Definitely try it!

Very disappointing. Service wasn’t very good neither was the food. Not sure what the hype is about. There must be many more places worth eating than this one.

One of the best restaurants where we ate in Italy; whether it is a tourist trap(or not), whether the origins of Alfredo Sauce being born here are a myth(or not), whether Italians eat here(or not), whether it’s a hip/hype restaurant(or not), the bottom line is the FOOD, and the food is absolutely delicious and one of the best we had in Italy. The service, is also top notch, we had 2 – 3 servers throughout our time there, and unlike American Restaurants where you are ushered in and out, at Alfredo’s were encouraged to linger, be present, and fully enjoy our time over a bottle of chilled white wine and warm breadsticks. We ordered the«famous» Alfredo dish, and it did not disappoint, the sauce(though made from the simplest ingredients), warms the heart with it’s buttery creaminess, and the fresh pasta is perfectly al-dente. We also ordered a penne with prosciutto and pistachio bits drizzled with olive oil, and it also tasted like it had been made with great attention to detail.

This is just a kind of place you HAVETOGO when you are in Rome. Just to prove that you have been to Rome and Italy. And to see all the pictures in the dining room is quite interesting. The Alfredo Fettuccine is really good. The rest of the food are nice but nothing extraordinary… The services is pretty good. The restaurant in a pretty nice area, so you can walk around after a heavy dinner.(well, you need to walk around anyway in Rome…)

I ate here recently and just loved it. It was right around the corner from the place I stayed at – literally a few doors down. The wait staff was rather slow but when in Rome I learned you eat slowly and not like there are 10 brothers and sisters who will eat your serving if you don’t hurry. The Fettuccine was fabulous and the environment was magical. They have set menus if you get confused by the different courses so this is what I did. Do order the Fettuccine as this is what they are noted for. The place was slow when I arrived but when I left it was packed full of Italians chattering away. The old couple next to me were kind enough to snap my pic for me. The people were really nice.

Apparently reported to be the birthplace of fettuccine Alfredo. While it is a bit touristy, it’s still worth a stop. Your dish is made table side. Fun experience. Food is good. Not great but fun to do just once!

So, where do I start? Thousands of Americans find their way here seeking the birthplace of «Alfredo Sauce». And there they are, snapping their photos, posing at this iconic place, ordering their real and authentic original Fettuccine Alfredo… blah blah blah… But I ask anyone reading this on their smart phone while deciding to dine here or not: look inside. Please, just have a look. Now ask yourself how many Italians you see inside. Come on, do it… I’ll wait. Yeah, I know… ZERO. NADA. That would be NESSUNO in Italian. Now of you haven’t asked yourself the logical follow up question yet, I’ll ask for you: if this place is the birthplace of an iconic Italian dish, how could it be that no Italians themselves are taking in the the historic significance, right? Because«Fettuccine Alfredo» is in no way Italian. Nope… It is an italian inspired American dish. And as any Italian about it and they have never heard of it. So in a nutshell, you are in a tourist trap, there to ensnare unsuspecting American tourists with a story. If you are into that sort of thing, knock yourself out, but at that point why not go find a place with fantastic and authentic Roman cuisine and save your fettuccine Alfredo cravings for a trip to Olive Garden? I mean, you are in Rome!!! Do yourself a favor: just go next door to ReCafe and get a pizza. They make fantastic pizza there!!!

My mom’s foodie friend told us about this place, the so-called birthplace of Fettuccine Alfredo, so naturally it was on our list of eats while in Rome. We made a reservation and were promptly seated. The food was good. Not great. I mean, I don’t know you can really jazz up Alfredo sauce all that much, but still. I think most of the waiters have been there for decades. A cute little old man walked around with his accordion and serenaded guests. It was cute at first, but since we got there when the restaurant first opened, he kept returning to our table. And returning. And you get the hint. I think all of the celebrities whose pictures adorn the walls went there in the height of the restaurant(1960s, 1970s). Neat to say I’ve been there, but I probably would never return.

This is a classic place to stop in if you’re a foodie. Anytime you have the chance to eat somewhere that a dish was first created, you should come in and try the original. Known as the birthplace of Fettuccine Alfredo, it’s a creamy and well flavored dish that is served up with housemade pasta and a classic dining room experience. It’s not going to be your best meal in Rome, but it is worth stopping in at least once to experience the original.

I loved this place! The waitors were great! Attentive and funny despite language barrier! The food was amazing. We of course ahd the fettucini alfredo which was great and the gnocchi pesto. There gelato is yummy also! I defnitely recommend this place! Our group loved everything about it!

This is supposed to be the original home of Alfredo sauce. The place lacks ambiance. The wait staff is unfriendly and not attentive. The food was nothing special. The walls are covered with old photos of celebrities but I think its highly unlikely that any celebrities have been there recently. I think it was probably more popular in the 1950’s.
