Antico Caffè Greco

Delicious pastries and hot chocolate! Definitely a gem for pastries in a sea of crummy touristy pastry places by the Spanish steps. Go here and stand at the bar to save money, it’s not that expensive!

Wenn man in Rom ist und in der Nähe der spanischen Treppe sollte man sich unbedingt einen Abstecher in das Antico Caffè leisten.
Leisten deswegen, da man mit Espresso und süße Cannelloni (Gebäck mit Vanille-​Ricotta-​crème-​Füllung glaube ich) schnell bei 10 € ist.
Aufgrund dem genannten historischen Hintergrund und als «Künstler-​Treff» bekannt sollte man sich das elegante Café nicht entgehen lassen.

The inside was gorgeous! If you sit down, one of the gentlemen in tuxedos will wait on you. Each tea pot can be shared between two people, so the four of us ordered the summer blend (amazing!) and green tea with wild strawberry (also amazing!) and shared. The salmon sandwich and the tuna with tomato sandwich were tasty as well, but definitely small if you’re considering having a sandwich for lunch.
It was quite pricey, so plan on staying there for a while and enjoying the ambience. They serve you tiny glasses of complimentary water, along with a small plate of miniature cookies.

Le lieu est chargé d’histoire, les serveurs costumés (en costard j’entend hein né vous attendez pas à voir débarquer Superman ou Maya l’abeille car là vous êtes loin du compte), des banquettes rouges en velours, tables en marbre y tutti quanti.
Mais bon à 9 euros le capuccino on sent quand même passer la pilule. Alors pas de soucis à la base à payer ce prix pour un cadre et un service adaptés.
Là il y avait des moucherons partout autour de nous, deux sont venus mourir dans mon verre d’eau et pour régler notre note il nous a fallu attendre dix minutes et demander à trois pingouins différents (oups excusez-​moi c’est sorti tout seul).

Near Spanish steps area, just a quick walk down the street. We were waiting for our tour, so we decided to go in for AC and a quick snack/​bite.
The Tomato egg Sandwich was okay, and there’s not much for vegetarians here.
Inside is nice, looks small, but the place goes a long way.

Cappuccino is too good. tea biscuits are must try. the inside seating and interior will throw u back 2 centuries…

Cool place. It’s pretty much what I envisioned a hip European Café to be before I ventured over there.
They know they’re cool, but they still make an effort to give you good food/​drinks/​coffee, albeit at an elevated price. The menu has the storied history of this place and it makes you feel like you get to participate in the coolness of the place.
Came in and ordered a Café con crema and it was really good. Probably the best coffee I had in Europe, and I had a lot of coffee over there. I had a ham sandwich for a quick afternoon bite and it was serviceable. Nothing to write home about. But I saw some of the pastries go by and I realized that I made a horrible mistake by not ordering any of them. Oh well. Live and learn. It’s been around for several hundred years, so I’m optimistic that I will have another opportunity to eat here on my next Rome visit!

Ein uriges Café, in dem man einmal gesessen haben muss. Die Kellner sind bemüht, aber eines muss man wissen: Dieses Café ist sehr teuer. Ein Café Latte kostet 8 Euro, ein Cappuccino 6 Euro. Unbedingt in den Bereich hinten gehen und einen Eckplatz einnehmen. Dort ist die Chance größer, nicht von fotografierenden Touristen gestört zu werden. Das Gebäck: einfach Cornetto bestellen; alles andere ist vernachlässigst. Wie gesagt: Es kommt auf die Atmosphäre an, nicht auf die Qualität der Speisen und Getränke.

Great café near the Spanish steps. My BF got an espresso and I got a cappuccino. Both were good. We also got a tiramisu which we really enjoyed. We got our drinks at the counter, which is a lot cheaper than sitting down. Definitely a great spot for coffees and desserts.

Absolutely terrible. The only good thing about this place is its location. Otherwise the food is nothing special, small portions and it was way overpriced.

Whoa is this place expensive. Although that’s kind of obvious. It’s in the middle of tourist central.
I know it’s cheaper to stand up and drink your coffee and eat your pastry. But sitting down and actually taking in the atmosphere is an amazing experience and I’d recommend everyone to do that.
Friend and I split a tiramisu, a cannoli (you have the option of a crème with chocolate in it, or orange, and we opted for the latter) and we had an Americano and a cappuccino. Everything was delicious, especially the tiramisu. It was quite possibly the best I’ve ever had.
The historical aspect of this place also makes it amazing. Romantic poets John Keats, and Lord Byron would come here to drink. So if you really want to have an amazing experience, I’d recommend going to the Keats & Shelley museum, taking your time there to read everything and learn about their tragic and beautiful lives, then coming here to let it all sink in. That’s what I did and although it was really simple, it was a really good experience.
Overall, don’t be turned off by the high prices, if you don’t really want to spend that much, just have your coffee and pastry at the bar instead of taking a seat.

The waiters are in super classy tuxedos here and the desert and coffee here are so good! Definitely recommended

There is a reason artist and poets once flocked to this place. I can still taste my best cappuccino ever had from here. I live in one of the world’s greatest city — NYC. But a good cappuccino is something to be desired here in Manhattan. And BTW, there is a difference between un caffè o espresso in Italy, ask your Nonna. In Italy the barista goes to school to «learn» about coffee or they are taught from generations of experience. When in Rome… stop here for the best espresso, cappuccino o caffè of your life!

Local super charmoso, ao lado da Praça de Espanha. Tortas e pães magníficos, além dos diversos tipos de cafés.
O serviço é bom, mas precisa de um pouquinho de paciência.

Rude rude rude service. Treats foreigners differently than locals at espresso bar. And espresso was mediocre quality.

You’d figured that if this restaurant has been here for the last 250+ years, they must be doing something right! Damn right! Great espresso, scrumptious pastries, awesome décor, and my goodness, your waiter is in a tuxedo! Our waiter was very attentive and helpful.
Price is a bit more than what most Americans would pay for espresso or coffee, but for the quality of food, impeccable service, and beautiful ambience, I’d definitely return!

After hours of walking around Rome and taking in the sites I was in desperate need of a coffee to pick me up and what better place to stop than the oldest café in Rome.
The décor in this café is amazing and you can imagine numerous artists, writers, politicians etc of the past sipping an espresso whilst putting the world to rights. The staff are very helpful and smart in their tuxedos. It has the feel of afternoon tea at The Ritz but prices are reasonable. It also has the cleanest toilets I have ever been in.
If you are in a rush like I was, you can have a coffee at the counter and do not have to sit in. However, with the amazing looking cakes and fabulous atmosphere I would recommend taking the time to sit down, relax and enjoy the full experience.

This is the oldest café in Rome going back to 1760, that’s 254 years !! Close to Spanish Steps, the place is divided into many rooms separated by arched columns and the antique seats all face each other.
This was a gathering place for the intellectuals in the past and I heard it still is. To name few of patrons: Bufallo Bill, Wagner Pasolini, Goethe, Stendhl used to come here. You can browse around and there’s a back room with a piano, but most people either order at the bar or grab a seat inside. I had an ice cream and espresso, I was mostly there for the ambiance.

Café assis très très cher. Mieux vaut le prendre au bar avec une bonne pâtisserie. Sinon le cappuchino n’était pas extraordinaire.

We came here third times during our Rome visit last month. It is located very close to the Spanish steps. The hot chocolate & Tiramisu were wonderful!

The entrance was very crowded when we arrived. They had a lot of people buying coffees and desserts to go. Because of the chaotic entrance, we didn’t know if it was self seating. We sat ourselves, but I’m not sure that we were supposed to.
The menu had a large variety of drinks. Mostly coffees, some wines and cocktails as well. The food menu was limited and a bit pricy. The food quality and the location of the café is clearly the reasoning for the price. The portions were very small.
Overall, everyone was very friendly. We enjoyed the café, but I’m not sure we would return. The staff was dressed in formal attire, and we were fresh off our plane, bags and all. I felt a little out of place.

Less than a block away from Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps. Caffe Grecco is the oldest bar in Rome and a cool place to get caffeined-​up after a long morning of sightseeing and shopping. Best cup of cappuccino I’ve had in Rome!
QUICK TIP: Drinking/​Eating at the bar is cheaper, much cheaper. I ordered a cappuccino at the bar for € 3,00. Which isn’t terrible, as tuxedos are standard-​issue for baristas. If we had sat down, it would have been € 8,00 for the same cup.
Although, entering the caffe was very fascinating. It was like walking into a time capsule. Furniture, décor, wall art were all so antique, you would think you were in the year 1760. Definitely worth the visit!

We were tired of the hotel breakfast and wanted to try something else… found this on Unilocal and so glad we did.
Really good, very cute place, friendly service, and cleanest public bathroom in Rome.

Le Lonely Planet, meilleur ami de mon mec lors de nos voyages (je préfère nettement partir à l’aventure mais ça le rassure !) nous conseille ce café/​salon de thé.
Le caffe Greco se situe en plein coeur d’un quartier touristique au milieu des boutiques de luxe ce qui aurait du nous mettre la puce à l’oreille…
Nous entrons tout d’abord dans une petite boutique mi-​boulangerie, mi-​épicerie bondée de monde et nous dirigeons vers le restaurant.
On nous présente la carte et là, c’est le drame. 10 € le chocolat chaud, 15 € le thé et je né parle pas du prix de la part de gâteau! Le cadre est typique mais rien né peut justifier de tels prix…
Bref, 20 € pour deux chocolats chauds, merci Lonely Planet pour «le bon plan».

Near the Spanish Steps in the shopping mecca of Rome. Very upscale. Staff dressed so impeccable. My hubby had the cappuccino with a blueberry muffin. I had the pistachio cake. I find the italian cakes and muffins to be on the dry side — -not bad just dry. I guess that’s why you should have it with a cappuccino. By the way, theirs (cappuccino) wasn’t as steep in flavor then others we tried. We did the customary thing to do in that you order your caffe and stand and drink and eat your food at the bar. If you are seated, the cost to have a cappuccino is $ 6 Euros compared to $ 1,50 at the bar. Go to Greco for the ambience and experience not for the caffe or food.

Located just steps away from the famous Spanish Steps, Café Greco is a classic coffee shop established around 250 years old. Come here to relax after a long day of sightseeing. The coffee is good; I like the café macchiato (sweetened iced coffee with milk). The tiramisu comes in a glass cup with lots of cream and is rather enjoyable. There’s also complimentary spotty wifi.

Eine herrliche Atmosphäre hier muss man mal erlebt haben.

Es ist dicht neben dem Gasthofe [von Franz Roesler] ein Caffeehaus, das griechische Caffeehaus genannt, worin man den Wein Orvieto, in welchem sich der deutsche Prälat auf Montefiascone zu Tode trank* sehr gut bekommt. In diesem Caffeehause findet man überhaupt viele Deutsche und besonders Künstler, die hier frühstücken, auch wohl zu Zeiten essen. Doch muß man sich von einem solchen Caffeehause keine Vorstellung machen, wie von einem deutschen. Man tritt von der Straße in ein Zimmer hinein, das wie ein Hausflur aussieht, worin einige Tische, Stühle und Bänke stehen und einige Aufwärter bereit sind, Chokolade, Caffee mit elender Milch und Gebackenes mit Sauerteig aufzutischen. Von einem Caffeehause mit mehreren eleganten Zimmern, mit Billards, Sophas, Spiegeln usw. hat man in Italien keinen Begriff.

Vielleicht ein bischen ungewöhnlich, aber diesmal haben wir an der Bar keinen Caffé getrunken, sondern einen Campari orange. Was für ein Genuss mit frisch gespresstem Orangensaft — einfach köstlich! Und an der Bar kann man das Treiben sowieso am besten beobachten. Die Pause hat sich gelohnt!

Meiner Meinung nach ein Muss für jeden Rom Besuch, die Atmospähre ist unschlagbar. Ok, die Kellner im Frack sind manchmal nicht die schnellsten, aber hier haben wir ja Zeit und genießen die Atmosphäre. Der Kaffee schmeckt klasse, der Kakao übrigens auch.
Lasst Euch von den Preisen nicht abschrecken, sondern probiert es einfach mal aus, Ihr werdet begeistert sein!

Genießen sie es, man gönnt sich doch sonst nichts! Der schönste Salon ist ganz hinten im Café. Und lassen Sie es sich nicht vom Geschwätz der Neidhammel vermiesen.
Der Vielschreiber Herbert Rosendorfer verkündet, seine Liebe zum Caffè Greco sei etwas erkaltet, seit er feststellen musste, daß (2007) der einfache Espresso 8 Euro 50 kostet (Rom. Eine Einladung” S. 35; zu diesem, zu seinem mißratenen Buch «Kirchenführer Rom» und zu seinen beiden ebenso problematischen Venedig-​Büchern siehe meine Rezensionen unter
). Ich vermute, daß er hier, wie auch an manch anderen Orten, über die er schreibt, nie gewesen ist, denn soviel hat der Kaffee dort nie gekostet und kostet er nicht. Jetzt (September 2009) erhält man im Caffè Greco formvollendet am Tisch serviert den Espresso (Caffè normalo) für 5 EUR, Cappucino, Caffè latte oder Caffè americano für 7 EUR. Nimmt man aber seinen Kaffee im Stehen an der Bar (al banco), kostet der Espresso 90 Cent, Cappucino, Caffè latte oder Caffè americano 1,30 EUR.

Historique et bon
Café historique du centre de Rome où se rendaient autrefois les philosophes et les artistes, à deux pas de la Piazza di Spagna et des boutiques de la via Condotti. On vous y sert un excellent café et surtout un chocolat (con pana) ainsi que des patisseries et des glaces superbes. Les prix sont malheureusement à l’aulne du cadre.

Kaffe schlürfen wie der alte Goethe in der ewigen Stadt. Hier weht nicht nur der Kaffeeduft durch die Räume, sondern auch der Hauch der Geschichte. Sicher nicht ganz günstig, aber man sollte es sich gönnen, hier einen Espresso oder ähnliches zu geniessen und die Stimmung in sich auf zu nehmen. La dolce vita.

Das Caffè wurde 1760 eröffnet und ist somit eines der ältesten in Rom. Hier hat nicht nur Goethe verkehrt, sondern auch Heine, Schopppenhauer, Baudelaire, Wagner und viele andere Dichter und Denker. Und natürlich meine Wenigkeit…
Das Caffè ist eine Legende in Rom.
Die Via Condotti ist die teuerste Einkaufsstraße in Rom. Hier und in den angrenzenden Straßen befinden sich die Nobelgeschäfte von Bulgari, Gucci, Ferragamo und vielen anderen.

Un coup d oeil vaut le detour
Le café greco né deroge pas a sa reputation. En effet a deux pas de la piazza de spagna et sur la via condotti ou luxe et paillettes sont omnipresent, le café greco semble avoir resisté a l empreinte du temps. Une multitude de petites salles en enfillade partent du comptoir d entrée toujours bondée jusqu aux toilettes tout au fond. Le décor ancien et les peintures donnent un cote apres guerre a cette embleme de rome où né pas s y arreter serait pecher.

Das angeblich bekannteste Caffe Roms (ich kannte es vorher nicht). Die Nähe zur Spanischen Treppe ließ preislich nichts Gutes erwarten. Lustigerweise hatte ich hier den zweitgünstigsten Espresso in Rom.
Das ‘Geheimnis’: Während der normale Touri es sich auf den Plüschsofas bequem macht und anschließend schlappe 4 EUR (oder waren’s doch ‘nur’ 3) für einen Espresso zahlt, stellt sich der Italiener an die Bar und genießt ihn dort, was sich im Preis deutlich bemerkbar macht (0,90 EUR). So bekommt man auch viel mehr vom italienischen Leben mit.
