One of the more enjoyable aspects of traveling through Italy was the amount of gelato and sorbetti we sampled during our time there. Especially since it was summertime, gelato was something we had at least 2 – 3 times a day. Some were definitely better than others and Cremolose was one we enjoyed quite a bit while in Sicily. Cremolose came highly recommended by a friend of ours who resides in Rome who swore up and down that it was a can’t miss if we were going to be in Palermo. We sought it out after a long day of walking around the city and it came as a much needed sweet and cool reprieve. We chose a variety of flavors so we could try as many as we could and they included pistachio, almond, lemon, watermelon, and chocolate. Cremolose has gelato and also what is called ‘cremolose’ which is like a cross between a sorbet and gelato. The texture is unctuous– sticky, thick, and a little gummy but not necessarily a bad way, just different from your typical gelato. The almond and pistachio flavors have nuts ground into them so they are chunky or gritty but have a very fresh flavor. I’m not much of a nut fan so I preferred the lemon as the flavor was very bright, tangy, and palate cleansing. A nice change from your typical gelato, Cremolose is recommended if you’re in Palermo and looking for some sweet.
