BEACHDRINK This is a beautiful location on the beach and it is one of the prime spots to hang out at while at Marina de Modica. My cousin wanted to grab a beer with us and he told me to meet him here at 11am. We arrived at the same time and immediately walked up to the bar. It’s funny how Sicilians like beer from other countries. I would have been happy with a Moretti but my cousin wanted Becks. Now I must admit the Becks here tastes amazing and nothing like the crap they serve in America, so I was happy with the selection. My little one did not get a beer but settled on a home made granita. This is totally a refreshing treat while on a hot beach just like my Becks beer. We sat there and talked with my cousin. We had to go to Google Translate a few times and luckily they have free wifi here. The bartender didn’t trust me with the password and he typed it into our two iPhones. He seemed a little mad that I handed him two phones but oh well I’m Sicilian too so don’t push me. My cousin still has a flip phone and was amazed with the translation tool on our smart phones. It does come in handy when traveling. We enjoyed our beer and watched the people on the packed beach. The temperature was almost 90 but luckily Sud had a shaded area for us to sit. I saw a bunch of customers come in and use the free wifi without buying anything. Now I know why the bartender guarded the password but I think he’s not doing a great job of protecting it if people are using the internet without making any purchase. SUD also has food. I was told that the chef spoke English but I never got a chance to actually talk to him. He always seemed busy when I walked by and we walked by here every day for 2 weeks. You can also rent beach chairs and an umbrella which comes in handy during this heat. Many years ago this didn’t happen and the beach was public for everyone. My cousin told me that they probably paid money to the local government in order to rope off the area. I’m sure this was an under the table deal. They still do business here the old fashion way… wink wink. There is a sand volleyball court in back and a few sand bocce ball courts in front. I wanted to get in on the bocce ball but the players were very intense. I felt like I was watching Bocce ball on ESPN, if they actually would broadcast that sport. A local friend of mine was playing all the time and I kept waiting for him to ask me to join in but it never happen. Sicilians don’t follow hints very well or they simply just ignore them. That’s the Sicilian way! If you find yourself on the beach in Marina de Modica then this is the place to grab a drink with a view of the beach. They kind of have everything from beach chairs to drinks to food. So kick back and enjoy the day because you are on the Southern most point of Italy.
