This was one of the first places I noticed when I walked down my street for the first time. Not to mention the second thing I noticed was the Unilocal!sticker in the window! Woo! It had been raining most of the day, I missed the group day trip because I had a migraine earlier in the day and now I was just looking for a little bite to eat and some tea. I walked down the street and went in. It is a cute place, everything inside(except the poster of The Beatles) is American. It has that 50’s diner feel about it. Even down to the little pink and black booth. For selection, they had Apple Pie, Carrot Cake, Coconut Cake, Fruit Crumble, Cheesecake with various fruit toppings, Brownies, Cookies, and a couple different flavors of cupcakes. It was a hard decision and for some reason, even though I knew I might not like it, I decided to go with the Carrot Cake. Prices were reasonable… 3.30 for a pretty large slice. The lady behind the counter speaks English really well… I’m convinced that she probably lived in the states for a number of years and then decided to come back to Italy. The cake… was, to my surprise, pretty good! While I didn’t care for the hard, white coating on the outside, the rest of the cake was delicious. I thought the center was just whipped cream, but on further taste tests, it had a slight tang of cheese… maybe something a little less strong than American cream cheese… like Ricotta or Mascarpone. Whatever it was, it was very nice and really complimented the cake well. As I was sitting there I noticed the little menu on the table… they do breakfasts, specifically pancakes, French toast, and bagels. Some of the bagels are savory, so potentially a light lunch. So I decided I would come back… yes for pancakes… and American coffee. On my second visit, I was sad to find out that they only did pancakes on Sunday mornings :(. My own fault for not looking closer at the menu. I still wanted breakfast so I decided on a bagel with Nutella and bananas, and a cup of American coffee. They only fill the cups up half way, so you’re like me, you will probably have to ask for more. Sugar and cream to the side of the dessert case. The coffee was really good. I guess I was worried that it may just be instant coffee, but it was good enough to get a refill. The bagel was nothing special… it was a poppy seed bagel, slathered with so much Nutella, it was dripping off the sides and through the center. Make sure you bring a wet wipe. While I was sitting there, a lady came in for a slice of coconut cake, and another lady came in for an assorted box of desserts. So clearly they are doing something right! Great place for dessert!
