What an absolutely incredible place. Words can’t describe how pleased I was with the facilities and the service provided by the staff here at Il Portico. My trip through Italy wasn’t going so great. Between the earthquakes, ferry strikes, having to learn how to drive a stick shift in central Rome, and the excessive amount of time it took me to finally arrive on capri, I was exhausted when I arrived here. The first thing I noticed about this place was the smile that was always on the face of Antonio(the owner), and his wife(Alessanda). I was warmly greeted, and I could already tell this was going to be a good stay. Antonio runs a tight ship. Everything is VERY clean. The beds are comfortable, and the rooms are VERY well-kept. The views from the terrace and the rooms(with the exception of the triples) are breathtaking. The triple rooms are located in the back of the place and don’t have such awesome views, but they are literally overlooking the terrace where some of the best views are. This place is situated right next to the main road that leads toward Anacapri from the port. It’s about half way between the port and Anacapri. It’s really a perfect location to get to the piazetta, and a 1,80 Euro bus ride will take you straight here(or straight to anywhere else you’d want to go on the island). The breakfast in the morning is great. Little pre-wrapped italian pastries with fresh juices. There’s a coffee machine in the lobby that costs 0,80 Euros, and that thing makes an amazing cup of coffee. They also have a vending machine with very reasonably-priced snacks and beverages(No diet coke, so bring your own if you’re a diet coke addict like myself). The neatest thing about this place is the sense of family you get. While the owners leave after about 7PM, during the day they are there to answer any questions you could possibly have about Capri. We got several restaurant recommendations as well as some words of advice for navigating what is possibly the most confusing place in the world to travel within. The rates were very reasonable at about 100 Euros per night for a room. If more hotels were run like this, there would be a lot more happy travelers out there. It’s also very helpful that Antonio and his wife are extremely fluent in both Italian and English, so the language barrier wasn’t an issue. This place is an absolute gem in a place where many people like to take advantage of the naiveté of American tourists. I don’t think it’s possible to have a bad time at Hotel Il Portico.
