The Bretzel Bakery

I’ve been hearing about this place for a long time and this was my first venture in. Firstly — wow — if you’re trying to go for a low or no-​carb diet — stay well clear. The bread. It’s so plentiful and varied and beautiful. There’s an entire wall made up of all different types. Seriously tempting.
Anyway I was in and out pretty quickly, got myself a toasted goats cheese & beetroot relish sambo with rocket on granary bread. It was fresh, flavoursome, had well distributed & balanced ingredients, and not bad value at 5.50.
The only thing I’d mark a star for, which in all honestly would stop me from running back, was the staff. I had two staff members deal with me and both of them barely looked me in the eye, never mind raised a smile. It wasn’t the most pleasant of encounters which was a real shame because I really wanted to love this place, and revisit as it’s so close to our office. Having said that, it could have just been a bad day in there, and the sambo was that good, I’ll give them another whirl at some stage I’m sure.

I love coming here at the weekend to buy fresh bread rolls and sweet treats.
My favourites are the ciabatta and their cinnamon rolls. I also quite like their onion baps. For sweet treats I’ve tried iced biscuits and cream buns.
They taste as good as they look and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve had anything bad from here!!!

Hands down the very best bakery in the city. I dont need to say much, other than go. Staff are nice, do a marvelous range of breads, cakes and pastries. Just do it!

Best bread in Dublin and a wide selection. They also serve pastries with a cinnamon roll the side of your head. Recently renovated and added a coffee area. We go as often as we can to get our sourdough and other speciality breads.

one of the spotted places in portobello that would brings you to the area again. I had a blueberry cake and my friend got a carrot cake. I tasted both and God, even though i am not a big fan of blueberry cakes but this one was just moist and delicious. The carrot, on the other hand, was so fresh and was the last piece on the plate sooo it must be that delicious.
I would recommend it.

Not enough true bakeries in Dublin. This one is a gem. Everything is fresh & tasty. I get a coffee at Wall & Keoghs, but walk around the corner for a treat. Pastries, breads, bagels… yum.
I was sad when the rathmines location closed. So I don’t get to portobello as often as I would like. But no trip is complete without stopping here.

Watch out for their in-​shop promotion of local interest books too! One of the «establishment» locations with a strong history and sense of continuity with the Little Jerusalem of yore that is matched by superb baked goods: Everything from white vienna loaves and bread of all grains and flours to apple and pear slices to muffins to ginger breadmen. A range of condiments, jams, chutneys and the rest to match too. A great place to pick up the Sunday brekkie bread of Saturday sweets or just to pop in an spoil yourself. Nicely present, helpful staff, slicing of bread available. A great fave in Portobello, D8!

Follow your nose … it always knows.
The bakery is another jewel in Portobello. I love walking to this spot to pick up the best bread ever: Country Store. More often than not you have to arrive earlier in the day as the pickings are slim when it draws closer to closing time.
The selection is lovely from croissants to various loaves to pizza bread to yummy desserts. Pick up a chocolate caramel bar or a pear tart and you will not be disappointed!
Tips: Cash only. No seating. Arrive earlier in the day. Ask for your loaf to be sliced!
Bretzel is the next best thing to sliced bread… ;)

Batch, stonebaked, granary, sourdough, brown, sliced. Bread? You want it they bake it. Thats why its a phenomanal bakery. A lovely little kosher spot with a history as rich as its forefathers. I cant stand that mass produced stuff you buy in tescos that sticks in your teeth. These guys are passionate about their produce and are comfortable with recommendations. Friendly staff but they can be a bit cheeky thats why im dropping a star because they laughed at an old lady who tried to use Sterling instead of German euros. If your sick of «BRENNANS POISON» then give this bakeorama your well earned dough (metaphor)…

Finest bakery in Dublin? Can’t be 100 precent on that but it doesn’t need to get better then here really. Get there early at the weekends, stock sells out fast.

Bretzel Bakery is a brilliant bakery. I love pretty much all the bread from there. Although I haven’t had many of the cakes the few I have had have been great.
My favourites are Granary, batch and sourdough.
I cant understand the bad reviews that have been given here, seriously the bread is great. I would definitely try it rather than worry its not up to standard.

This bakery is a treasure in portobello.
Their Granary and Sourdough breads are my current favourites. Also I love the fact they now have a bread slicer and will slice your loaf right in front of you.

This is a really cute neighbourhood bakery, in a city where good honest bakeries seem scarce. Breads are tasty, cakes look lovely, and a good number of them are certified kosher (a last holdout of the Little Jerusalem neighbourhood which used to exist in the area). The bagels are good in the toaster, but they’re certainly the squarest I’ve ever seen, clearly baked in a big mass, and that doesn’t sit quite right with me. The challah is nice as it’s neutral all-​round in texture and taste, so it can take on any flavours you want to put on it. (I do prefer mine moister and sweeter, but it’s up to individual taste.)
But why don’t they actually do brezels (a.k.a. pretzels)? I would go miles for a real, German-​style brezel, and it’d only be fitting seeing as it’s the name of the place!

Full disclaimer: this is an update after speaking with the owner William at the Unilocal Elite Event at Dice Bar the other night.
I never dreamt I’d be sampling sourdough bread in a dive bar (
) before, but I suppose stranger things have happened. I also never dreamt I’d have to encounter the owner of The Bretzel Bakery in person and justify my review. Alas, both these things have just happened to me.
William, the owner of the Bretzel and generous food sponsor of our elite even approached me well after I had been appropriately relaxed by the free-​flowing suds from the Dice Bar event (see:
) to discuss my less than stellar review of the Bretzel Bakery. In true Irish fashion we were brutally honest with one another and a small weight has been lifted from my chest. Nevertheless my review still stands in terms of ‘stars’ but it is approaching 3 (maybe 2 ¾) after having tried the 100% Rye Sourdough and 30% Rye Sourdough drizzled with olive oil. Both are good solid breads that would make a great hearty sandwich.
William, bring on the bagels: and no bagels are not just «round bread» they are in fact a a very particular type of chewy bread that can easily be made without a «caustic hot water bath.» In fact I’ve made them at home a few times and they’ve turned out perfectly using a boiling pot of water and baking soda. Take a little leap of faith with your customers and give them an authentic bagel and see how they like it. I’m sure they’ll be hooked once they’ve tasted one of yours that’s properly baked. You’ve proved you can make good sourdough and I’m confident you could do justice to a bagel by improving upon the «bagel» that you currently offer.

I’m a giver.
I love bestowing pleasure, tis my trademark. Happy heads make Annie happy… And there I go again using the third person, ever so slightly alarming.
Anyhow enough of my poor mental health transgressions, let’s talk more about me giving you pleasure.
I have a Friday thing going on, it’s a barter of love. One week cupcakes were given to me. Last Friday I gave bagels.
I waited outside the bakery till it opened because good bread and bagels are worth waiting for… Seeing the smile on your face is worth waiting for.
By the time the store opened, there was quite the queue… My oh my Dublin town is full of givers it appears. William from the Bretzel gave me two free loaves of bread, divine. The whole circle of giving is a fantastic orgy of happiness.
Come visit me so that I can give you a bagel of pleasure, it will make you smile with it’s doughy freshness and that smile is all the evidence I need to tell me that the Bretzel are great at what they do because your belly is rejoicing, I can see it in your eyes :)

Most people who have ever walked out of the Bretzel Bakery with bagels and breads in their bag will agree that their baked goods are pretty awesome. Those who don’t are just impossible to please.
The bakery is ambitious and modestly priced. I’m lucky enough to live close by and when I want to treat myself on a Sunday, I come here for my newly baked breads and croissants. No Sunday brunch is complete without sweet pastries and Bretzel’s sugary treats are to die for, especially the chocolate éclair, just as mouth-​watering a the ones you’ll pick up in Paris. Droool…

You’ll get some of the best bread in Dublin here and if I lived closer, I’d be up at dawn to get their freshly baked dough. Unfortunately though, it sells like hot cakes (what an appropriate turn of phrase eh?), so you best be in earlier than early.
It also holds a special place in my heart because they gave me a freshly baked muffin at 6am one morning while stumbling home after a night out for free. Epic.

This place is really something special. The decendent of over 100 years of Jewish bakeries in this location, the Bretzel Bakery is run by people who really care about what they do. You can tell from the minute you step inside that they’re serious about baking the freshest, tastiest products they can. They make a ton of different goodies: baguettes, rye loafs, bagels, tomato bread, muffins, pastries, cookies, and more! But my advice is to get here early, as they could easily be out of what you’re looking for by the time you roll in mid-​afternoon. We were dismayed one day to hear they were completely out of bagels. Lesson learned! Rolled up the next morning and snatched me up a bundle before anyone else could. They were HEAVENLY.
The place is just a bakery, so don’t expect to come sit down and have a meal here. I feel like that’s a good thing; they’re really focused on the baking and don’t care to worry about feeding you a sandwich.

Although its no longer officially Kosher, the Bretzel bakery is still a great spot. Under new ownership the last few years its great to see the return to form of one of Dublin’s best bakeries.
Situated just off the main drag of south Richmond street on Lennox street. They’ve a great range of pastries, breads, bagels and the very old school gingerbread man, the bretzel is must visit on a weekend. Expect queues on Sundays.
They layout has changed slightly, the counter now faces you as you walk in, but the quality of the produce is still excellent. My particular favorites are the bagels & rye medium brown bread. Theres normally some breads or pastries for tasting on the counter so dig in.
