DART

So far my journey is nothing short of thrilling, I love all the fogged up windows that make it impossible to see out. That, coupled with the windy rain storm that soaked everyone on the platform while waiting has already made this a trip to remember. Four out of five stars.

The DART Really makes it so easy to get around Dublin. I know I can trust it to get me to work on time and it is rarely delayed unless the weather is really bad and even then they are super at communicating through Twitter to let you know what’s happening. The DART also has a great view of the coast line (Dublin has an amazing coast line) and along Dalkey and Killiney has one of the best views in Dublin. They have good deals if you’re a student, and it connects 2 sides of Dublin that would take hours if you were going by bus.
Most of the times is really clean and comfy, and normally the stops are very near the LUAS and bus stops if you are travelling on. If you use a Leapcard you get a euro discount if you changing from LUAS, bus or vice versa.

Worth EVERY penny they ask for…

DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is a rail system running north and south along the Dublin coastline. While I have only taken it as far north as Howth and as far south as Bray, it goes all the way to Malahide and Greystones respectively. The rail system is timely, clean, green and efficient. The views are spectacular, particularly on the southern coast line between Sandymount and Bray. I frequently take this from Pearse station to Dun Lagohaire, which is one of my more favorite trips.

Dammit DART! Why are we fighting? You have made me late for work twice this week due to «electrical problems». Why did you feel the need to get me caught in the rain? Were you under the impression I needed to shower twice that day? GAH! Please let me know what I can do to make amends for whatever I have done to you.
As you can see, I still think well of you, surely that will help me get back into your good graces, I hope.

The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is an electric rail system for traveling within the city of Dublin mainly along the east coast starting in the north either at Malahide or Howth and going through city center at Connolly Station and on south all the way to Greystones.
With a total of 31 stations it’s about an hour end-​to-​end and costs a maximum of 4.00 Euros or a minimum of 1.50 Euros, with the use of a LEAP card, depending on how far you are traveling.
If it’s the right month of the year you can even catch a sunrise over the Irish Sea from the train itself near the southern end of the system.
The few times that I’ve been on them the train cars were clean and not too crowded and the seats were comfy.
Too bad you can’t change to a bus or a LUAS tram without having to pay again. (–1 star)

Clean, comfy, great views, fast and easy. And best of all, inexpensive. One way trips can cost less than a bus across town! If you’re just visiting, t’s perfect for traveling the county for daytrips.

The DART has always been a fascination for me. My mother has been bringing me on it since I was about eight months old, so I hold many dear memories of whizzing by Howth bay on this giant green mechanical caterpillar.
Of course, you wil have difficulties remembering your fond memories when you’re late for work and standing on a crowded platform while staring at that little red led light turn from four to three to… four again

Yea i will admit… the «Coastal Tour» part is a little misleading, there is no fancy tour guide or audio guide or anything like that… you may be able to find some literature to accompany your trip but other than that you are simply getting a ticket to a station on either the northern or the southern end of the line.
The DART line is one of the more famous lines in the British Isles because of its scenic route along the coast.
My suggestion would be to get up early, on a clear day if you are lucky and buy a ticket so that you pass by Killiney Station. The views from the side of Killiney Hill and beach as the sun rises over the bay can be absolutely amazing… definitely one of my best memories seeing the sunrise there one morning… (or the end of a late night, depends how you look at it)
If you get a day ticket you can hop on and off as many times as you like, but with everything these days they just get more and more expensive as you buy into things like that. If you get a window seat on the coastal side you will be treated to some lovely views from most parts of the line.

This is called a tour but really you just buy a ticket at any DART station and take the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) to any where North or South along the coast for beautiful sea and coastal views.
Dublin’s coastline really is scenic whether you take the train to Howth, or the heritage village of Malahide or South bound to visit the harbour town of Dun Laoghaire or seaside town of Greystones. Or save up all your two penny coins and head for the slot machines of Bray!

I have to say, I’m a big fan of the DART. The trains are surprisingly clean and new (I’ve come across far, far worse public transport systems in my travels) and the service is quick and direct. I love the way you can get from the city centre to the beach (Howth or Malahide to the North, and Bray and Dun Laoghaire to the South) in around 30 minutes. And the view from the carriages ain’t half bad either. How on earth did Irish Rail manage to secure such prime, seaside real estate?
I would be a big advocate for extending the DART service in other directions throughout the city, because it’s a fantastic way to get around. My favourite station would have to be Grand Canal Dock — right on the canal — what a location! Does it get any better?!

I don’t understand all the 5 star reviews. You all must live on the west side of Dublin since DART service is that limited.
I was a little let down with how underdeveloped this rail is. Lucky for me, Dublin is a beautiful city to see on foot. From the airport I caught an AirLink for € 6.

The service isn’t great, the stars are for the views.
I would strongly advise a DART first thing in the morning heading South past Killiney Bay to catch the sunrise over the sea. Even returning to a red sunset and stopping off anywhere for a stroll along the coast (especially between Dun Laoghaire and Booterstown).
Keep an eye out for the odd bit of poetry printed around the inside walls of your carriage, and more recently, the occasional massive billboard with prints from Rasher. The DART supports art, apparently.
Don’t forget though, no matter how much more comfortable it is, ní do chosa suíochán!

The DART and I are friends of old. It has been with me through early shopping trips to town and family day trips to Howth, Dun Laoighaire, Dalkey etc, but most importantly, it carried me, in rain, hail and snow, in and out of university for four years. Actually, in many ways, you could say my degree is mainly thanks to the DART…
Although many have their gripes with the DART and some would say it’s more DAT than DART (the ‘r’ standing for ‘rapid’), it is undeniably a clean, safe and efficient way of travelling from north to south Dublin/​north Wicklow (as long as you don’t divert from the coastline). It now even extends as far as Greystones.
It isn’t complex or intricately inter-​connected like London’s tube or New York’s sub-​way (it’s basically one line), so you may have to link up with a bus or the LUAS when you get to your station. However, it definitely tops the tube and sub-​way for views (yes, I realise this wouldn’t be hard). A DART trip south of the city is worth it just for the coastal views from Dublin Bay right down to Killiney Beach.
Interestingly, San Fransisco has its own DART or BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). I wonder who had theirs first?!

Fährt man mit der Dart von Greystones über Bray nach Dublin, so erlebt man eine wunderschöné, ja nahe zu atemberaubende Strecke. Die Zuggleise verlaufen zum Teil direkt an den Klippen zum Meer und führen ebenfalls duch einen Berg durch. Der Zug ist immer sauber. Leider hat der öffentlich Verkehr in Irland einen ziemlich schlechten Ruf, da es außerhalb Dublins nicht gerade viele Züge bzw Busse gibt und diese recht teuer und z.T. unpünktlich sind. Zum Beispiel haben wir einmal für die Strecke von Dublin nach Greystones knapp drei einhalb Stunden obwohl man diese gewöhnlich in einer einer Stunde bewältigen kann. Trotzdem vier Sterne für die Dart, weil die Aussicht aus dem Zug so schön ist! (Ja. ich bin halt leicht zu überzeugen.(-;)

The DART isn’t very expansive, but it is clean and fast and gets you to and from points in and around Dublin City.

Es gibt einen relativ dichten Takt und die Bahnen sind pünktlich.

The DART (which stands for Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is Dublin’s inner city railway system. It’s run by Irish Rail, who also do the inter-​city trains, so the services all connect from main stations like Connolly and Heuston. The main lines run north, south and west of the city, with plenty of stops around the city centre. The DART is a great way to get to pretty places out of town (like Howth, Malahide, Dun Laoghaire, Greystones, etc) or for long commuter hauls. Late night trains have good security, and Irish Rail is slowly updating the fleet — I’ve been impressed by how new and clean some of the recent trains I’ve taken have been. Watch out for ‘Commuter’ services — they’re still DART trains but they’re designed for people traveling from far flung outer suburbs and they don’t stop at every stop. Be aware too that DART trains stop running earlier than a lot of the world’s metros, most lines are done by 11.30pm or so. But if there’s a station near you, and a station near where you need to go, there’s not much faster than the DART.
