Yat Tung Heen is quite a little gem in the dim sum world. I don’t think it is as known as the likes of Victoria Seafood, or the restaurant in City Hall, but it has a good local reputation for fine food, especially dim sum. The venue is large and spacious, there are plenty of tables with views across the harbour, but they are via internal windows that face on to the semi outdoor shopping centre. The staff are very polite and efficient, this is certainly somewhere you don’t need to rinse your crockery. Of course the highlight here is the food. The dim sum is light and delicate, but filling enough. The cost is a little higher than most, about double that of a very local place, but still not in the league of priciest hotel chains. It is definitely worth it, especially if your boss is coming to town, or you have an important family gathering. What is also good to se on the menu, or lack of in this case, is shark fin. This is a no shark fin restaurant, which surprised me initially, as it is quite a traditional joint, but it has indeed been fin free for some years. Unfortunately, there is something else unexpected that once came on the menu, and that was a cockroach in my steamer of char siu bao. To be fair, it was a small one, and the restaurant gave us free cake, I would have demanded the meal off, but my aunties were more interested in free cake. The restaurant tried to sweep it under the carpet, so only did anything when I made a fuss. I also reported it to the health department, but they found nothing further when they investigated. It seems quite a normal thing to have bugs in your food(that is why I never look in the kitchen of any restaurant in HK), I think you just have to accept that food hygiene in HK is less than what we westerners may be used to.
