Kam’s For the first time in over 30+ years that I had started to travel to HKG, I witnessed something very special today. While waiting for a table at Kam’s barbecue, I saw an old couple waiting for a table outside. It took the manager less than a minute to pull out a chair from the restaurant and offer it to the old couple. Apologized for the wait and managed the wait by informing the patient couple on the approximate wait time again. In HKG, this is definitely not typical, in fact, this is quite rare. Kudos Kam’s BBQ. The Michellin Star is very much deserved. Indeed, even at one of the busiest roast goose places, this place still has a heart! You make Mr. Kinsen proud and just provided a glimpse of what HKG customer service can be.

I was walking around Wan Chai looking for some lunch when I ran into Kam’s. I had seen it in the Michelin guide, but wasn’t expecting to go to it, but since I ran into it, might as well go. I ordered the goose and suckling pig combo over rice. I have had this dish at many Cantonese BBQ places in the US as well as throughout Guangzhou, but Kam’s is really a cut above. Many places place so much emphasis on an ultra crispy skin that the quality of the meat is sometimes sacrificed. Not at Kam’s. The goose was well rendered, and the skin crispy and delicious. The roasted suckling pig might have been even better. I feel like I could have cracked then skin if I would have smacked it with a spoon. The meat was also tender, juicy, and flavorful. My only gripes are that my combo plate only came one lonely Gai Lan, I wish there was another branch or two of veggies, and the rice was a little hard, so I didn’t fully enjoy all of the meat juice soaked goodness. Kam’s is pretty cheap less than $ 10USD for lunch. If ever I lived in HK, I’d probably go there multiple times a week. TL:DR: Kam’s does Cantonese BBQ right. Goose is good, but so is the Pig.

It’s a wait for sure but it is one of the tastiest roasted goose, fatty bbq pork, and crispy pork I’ve tasted. I’ve been here several times and the wait goes anywhere from 30mins to 1.5hrs. My family and I had to get congee down the street while waiting because we were so hungry. It’s worth the wait. Hang in there!

Thanks to my cousin willing to get there around 7 to reserved a wholeGoose for us 4. The wait was well worth it, we also ordered sucking pig, roast pork, Chinese sausage and all of them were out of the world. The Goose come and gone in less then 15, simply the best I ever had, they truly deserve a Michelin star.

Ive had roasts all around HK in less revered places n they don’t fall far from this place. In fact, I thought some of the others were tastier and they didn’t have as long a wait, squishy tables or higher prices to make it even less enjoyable. Kind of overrated in my opinion

OMG! I never knew I liked roast goose until this place. Long lines … but totally worth the wait. We ordered half a goose and other stuff. I say we should just ordered the whole goose and skip the other stuff.

1 star Michelin rated place– they take cash only and a little more expensive than most restaurants. A whole roast goose with honey roasted soya beans, cucumber with garlic and vinegar, fungus with vinegar, and fried vermicelli noodles to eat with the goose instead of rice. The goose didn’t blow me away but it was definitely really good. There was a bit of fat to make the meat tender and the skin was crispy and flavorful. There were some parts where it wasn’t tender, but overall a good experience and worth checking out.

On the search for roast goose, isn’t it always that when travelling to Hong Kong. So many places, and unless you live there, so little time to only pick a handful of places to try the elusive(only for us Canadian’s) meat! I was told of this place from one of my travel mates, and oddly enough I would run into this name again on a list provided from a friend in China, and the real key was that my AirBnB location was really not too far from this joint made it a no-brainer. I came in looking for a quick bite as my friend had to get all of his stuff and catch a plane, once we walked in I can tell you is that this place is no dump. I was expecting a cramped, easy fold up stool like seating with small tables, not something with glaring air conditioning coming down at you while you chill out and order, nice booths and tables, bright white lights so you can see the food clearly with your eyes and camera. In Hong Kong they do not waste time and luckily for us there was a table for two tucked near the back and right away they gave us menu’s. I was determined to try their version of roast goose, and so I ordered, that… and roast pork but I was denied once again, where it seems like their suckling pig was sold out… at 3:30PM on a Tuesday??? this must be some good piggy(oink oink!) So no matter… roast goose on rice it was… and how funny they had these little markings in red beside certain dishes to signify ‘Kam’s’ signature picks… I put in the order and the wait begins. When you do eventually get here, they do not shy away that they are a 1 Michelin Star restaurant, with the tire boy and his thumbs up, and stating they are a clear 2015 choice for the guide, right up to the menu, and the paper table mats presented in front of you, just so you remember and provide some placebo effect that you are getting premium stuff! On to the roasted fowl coming to my table, nicely chopped up and laid out on the rice, this plate seemed to ever glow from the bright white HID’s from above make the roasted browned skin glisten for any camera to take. Served with two strands of gai-lan on the side as your green portions, this little plate with the white rice didn’t look like much, till I sunk my teeth into it. The lean goose meat, and the nice, almost falling off the body roasted skin, each bite was great, with a hint of smokiness, for me this would be my no.2 behind my favorite place, but definitely I would come back, especially if in the area for goose. I wish I could try their suckling pig, but I guess there always is a reason on coming back… and I will definitely need to! If you are looking for the small eat, but do not like the ‘hole in the wall’ feel, this is really the place for you, looks newly renovated, seats are comfortable, prices are reasonable, service is fast, and they have a ton of roast meats. just get here early so they don’t run out! They also serve a variety of things. I just was in need of rice. after a week without it!

This is the best siu mei I’ve ever had. I was very impressed by the roast goose and roast pork at Yat Lok, but everything here was on point. The baby pig might be even better than the roast goose. In fact, I had to come back a 2nd time for lunch because it was sold out the night before. Despite around a half-hour wait by myself, it was worthwhile just for those slices of heaven. I would definitely go back when I am in town again.

Walked in the rain to search for this Michelin star goose. Finally found it and saw a queue. So decided to order takeaway of the goose drumstick rice. The wait staffs are polite and were quick to take our orders. However the wait for the takeaway was horrible! I guess the kitchen forgotten our order as people ordering after us had long collected their orders. I had the roast goose drumstick rice. All I can say is, this place is overrated. I had better goose. The taste is not goose. I don’t know if I am eating goose or duck. There’s no goose fragrance. No fragrance at all. Should have just made the journey to far away yue kee instead. The skin is not crispy and the meat is all gamey and tough. The only saving grace is the plum sauce. Whoever is the taster for Michelin and gave this restaurant star must be having trouble with the tongue. It’s just an ok roast goose place but definitely not Michelin star standard.

This is my second favorite Chinese BBQ place in town. It’s a lot fancier than most with its clean white plates, fancy custom paper placemats, and English menu. All this luxury will cost you twice as much as Joy Hing(which is still not expensive) but can be a bit of a shock. I actually didn’t try the goose because… I’m dumb… and because I was determined to order in Chinese and I don’t know how to say goose. Luckily, the pork was delicious and it comes with your choice of an iced tea!

Liked — bbq pork(char siu) — roasted pork — prince noodles — white chicken — roast goose(it wasn’t legendary but definitely good) — ambiance(since it is newer, the furniture and décor is cleaner than places that have been around for a very long time) — service(quick and fairly attentive) So so — portions and price(they make you ‘pay’ for the Michelin star they advertise I guess) They were out of the suckling pig. Overall, it was a good meal but the hype, portion size and overall price of everything may not have lived up to expectations. Still if you are looking for a roasted bbq place and don’t mind a slight premium price, go here.

Food(***** out of *****); O.K., I’ve tried Hong Kong roasted goose in several places; Yung Kee served me a cold goose with rubbery fatty skin, Maxim’s Food2 serves a goose that has some fat under the average skin with flesh of average moisture, Victoria Harbor Roasted Goose Seafood Restaurant served roasted goose with average flesh with less fat under the crispy skin, and Kam’s Roast Goose served a super juicy flesh goose with some fat under the crispy skin. The goose was so juicy that you literally get a mouthful of soup when you bite into the goose. Kam’s is the best so far, Yung Kee was the worst, and Maxim’s is average. The bok choy was very juicy, the soup was very clear with no detectable MSG nor fat in it, the noodles were of moderate bounciness. Service(**** out of *****); No reservations, you have to line up on the street. However, one member of my dining party was handicapped so they did give her a chair to sit on when standing in line. Service was quick and courteous. Atmosphere(**** out of *****); Kinda reminded me of a fancier version of Café de Coral. Conclusion(***** out of *****); Tally is 4.3 stars but I couldn’t possibly give 4 stars to a restaurant that serves the best roast goose in the world, now, could I? Therefore, I rounded it up to 5 stars. If you’ve tried better, then please tell me where. Prices are a tiny bit higher than elsewhere; 490HKD for a whole goose and 255HKD for half a goose. Yum!

Introduced to me by a local friend of mine I had high expectations about this place. In fact I had seen people queuing outside of it but was never curious enough(ouch!) to try it out. It opened in July last year by one of the grandsons of Yung Kee founder. I have been there twice: first time we ordered half goose for two. And believe me it’s enough for two big eaters(around 250HKD). Our initial request was for bbq pork, but at 8.30 pm they had run out of… everything but goose. We were pushed to order beer which neither of us drink, a little annoying but oh well. The goose was good, fatty and juicy, but a little chewy. The skin wasn’t very crispy but it was flavoursome. Second time around we ordered the most desired bbq pork and two soups — it was really tasty and again a good portion. So were my expectations met? Kind of. The thing is I’ve been to other bbq places where service and food were much better. The place itself is really small, tables and chairs seem tiny and you feel a little cramped inside. I may come back because it’s just round the corner from my place and it’s convenient but my fav bbq place remains Golden China, in Sheung Wan(a little too far when you’re hungry and have to travel all the way there…).

I visited Kam’s last night at around 7:45pm. after reading news about the opening. We were 3 and the wait was around 30. While waiting you are exposed to the vehicle pollutions on busy Hennessy Road. Here are our evaluation of the food. 1.Century egg: very good 2.Liver:very good 3.BBQ pork: good 4.Roast goose: good 5.Pigeon:no good 6. Pak Choi: very good 7. Soup noodles: good I would caution visitor not to trust the recommendation of the staff based on my experience because she seems to be pushing out goods that are not saleable, i.e., pigeon. Also, food is not cheap. Ambiance is not bad.

I had to try the Kam’s family well-known preserved egg and pickled ginger. Century eggs are more of an acquired taste, but I’ve always loved them. The one at Kam’s had a slightly bitter and creamy yolk encased in transparent jelly-like whites. The roasted skin on the goose was slightly crispy that melted in my mouth. The meat was succulent, tender and juicy, but it lacked the aroma that makes this bird unique. I guess the obvious question would be, how does it compare to Yung Kee’s? I never thought Yung Kee’s goose was awesome, they are definitely good, but not out of this world. In terms of taste, I think Yung Kee might have a slight edge, but if you factor in the price, I would choose Kam’s over Yung Kee. Kam’s is a small modest shop that can seat 30 people and mainly offers roasted meats such as roasted goose, char siu, roast pork and soy-marinated meats. With limited seating, I can see they are also hoping to target to do a lot of takeaway meals.
