We stopped here for cappuccino the other day and decided to go back for Japanese food. I asked the waitress what was the difference between prawn tempora for $HK48 and prawn temporal for $HK55. She didn’t speak English, but the nice woman next to me did. The answer was that the more expensive came with rice, and I chose that. Well, for $ 48 you get 3 pieces of tempura, but for $ 55 you get only one piece, but various vegetables, of which I could recognize only corn, on rice. The tempura was okay, the corn was good, but the other veggies were(to me) just weird. Paul had prawn tempura in noodle soup. He got two pieces of tempura. The noodles were bland, but the soup tasty. I ate very little, so we ordered chocolate soufflé for dessert. Uchi seems noted for its desserts. It was a very ordinary chocolate soufflé. The nice couple on the other side told us a different Japanese restaurant where they go for a meal, and come to Uchi for dessert. They come all the way in from Hong Kong Island, so we’re going to try their suggestion in Tai Wai.

«Uchi» as Japanese as this name may sound. Is actually a mandarin pinyin(屋子)meaning«house». As the name suggest, the restaurant is a very cosy place selling Taiwan-Japanese food. The restaurant is small and is easy to miss as the door does not indicate any English name. Be sure to look for a black door and you will not miss it for sure. The house sits approx 22 – 25 people(inclusive of 4 bench seating). It is a rare to find café in the Tai Wai area so be sure to arrive early if you do not want to wait . The menu has extensive selection of deserts which unfortunately I did not manage to try after my onigiri set. They serve a few variety of set lunches such as Kobe beef rice set(was a special menu), hamburger need rice set(chefs recommendation), karaage rice set … Etc I tried the onigiri set and also the hamburger beef set. It was not bad but portions are small for guys ! My salmon onigiri set came with 2 onigiri(one salmon and the other with corn and bonito flakes. The salmon onigiri had minimal salmon which was disappointing and I wished they toasted my onigiri !! Would have made it so much nicer Overall the hamburger set was yummy. I would definitely come back to try the dessert next time I’m in the area !!
