They say blood is thicker than water My cuzzo always finds time in his busy schedule to spend time with me whenever I visit Hong Kong. And I am very fortunate because he usually brings me to local good-eats. On this particular night after spending hours of quality time on the PS4, my cuzzo and his wifey-girlfwen brought me to 沙田雞粥. Even at 11pm, 沙田雞粥 was still busy churning out dishes for hungry passersby. Many of them(us included) shared large tables, making it ever so interesting to see what your table-neighbors are eating. My cuzzo, street-wise beyond his years, placed our order with colloquial savvy, using restaurant-slang that I could only wish to emulate. Though I only half understood what we ordered, my confidence in my cuzzo’s decision never faltered. The first few dishes that arrived were the Soy Sauce Sauteed Clams, the Crispy Squab, and the Oyster Pancake(otherwise known as the Oyster Scramble). All of these dishes were tremendously appetizing and went well with our twin glasses of beer. Although the Oyster Pancake was pretty awesome, it lacked the yolky interior that I am accustomed to. I wasn’t too disappointed, however, given how the juiciness of the Squab made up for any flaws. But the star of the show was still the 沙田雞粥, or the Shatin Chicken Congee. Small blobs of yellow chicken fat were floating along the outer edges of the bowl, foreshadowing the intense chicken flavor that was immersed within. True to its look, the chicken congee were amazing. We shoved spoonful after spoonful into our eager stomach, all the while catching up on each other’s lives. We laughed at my cuzzo’s wifey-girlfwen for always choosing the cab over the East Rail Line, we compared the best of our GoPro videos, and pondered on our near future. And in no time at all, our plates were empty(mostly), our cups were dry, and our bowls of delicious congee were finished. It was a great meal. Our dinner at 沙田雞粥 really demonstrated why family is special. After not seeing each other for nearly 4 years, my cuzzo and I still had an awesome time hanging out over a fantastic bowl of congee. And it showed me something. Blood really is thicker than water… …but Chicken Congee is thicker than both ;) teehee
