Maybe we didn’t know what to order, but I didn’t find anything particularly special about the food here. Sure it’s fun to pick your own seafood if you’ve never done that before, but doesn’t make the food taste any different. We had scallops with vermicelli and mashed garlic(50hkd each), but they were taken from an ice cooler instead of one of the tanks. We also had half a kilo of shrimps(190hkd I think) that were cut in half and steamed with garlic. A small grouper(350hkd I think) that was steamed with«traditional Chinese sauce»(basically just soy sauce and scallions), seasonal veggie(pan) fried with garlic, and Singaporean noodles because it was vegetarian friendly. All of these dishes were ok: nothing that blew my mind but also wasn’t anything to complain about. The accompanying soy sauce with fresh chillies in it was the savior for most of the dishes which seemed a bit bland and needed a bigger kick than even those chillies could do. Maybe the point of this fresh seafood is to not mask it in other flavors or maybe our lack of Cantonese prevented us from ordering the dishes to be prepared the recommended way. It was definitely enough food and with a big bottle of Tsing Tao and pot of tea, everything was about 930hkd. Again, maybe I’m not appreciating the simple way of these seafood restaurants or we need to prepare what to order/how to have it cooked, but I think there are much better meals in HK for that much money.

I really love how everything is so fresh and the range of seafood you can choose from is extensive. Because the restaurant is located literally 10 meters from the ocean, you know it’s 100% fresh. The garlic shrimp and the clams are always my favorite. They’re fried with green onions, garlic, oysters sauce and a bunch of other delicious Asian herbs, but it never overshadows the flavor of the seafood. Everything is delicious and the presentation is beautiful. The atmosphere is so relaxing and it’s definitely an interesting experience to be able to pick exactly which item you want and be eating that same item half an hour later. Also interesting to realize the fate of that seafood lies in your hand.

Oh look, fish tanks! Wait, those are not fishes… well, some are but, there’s shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, shells, and more. For those not familiar with this concept, which is very popular in this area, and many restaurants in China, these tanks are where you come and choose what you will eat. Everything is alive and fresh. For us foreigners it is definitely and experience, and even an attraction(the first time). I remember, my first time, they allowed me to grab the lobster we were going to eat and take a picture with it. You could definitely see the nervousness in my smile. LOL! I didn’t know how I felt about that at the time but, I ate it anyway, and it was great! Like I said, this is not my first time but, I’m still not familiar with some of the options they have or how to ask them to cook it(or not), especially since I don’t know the language so, I rely on my local friends to help order. They know I’m not that picky and usually will try anything so, in front of the tanks, they order away(raw and cooked) and I just watch the dishes come, one after the other, and enjoy the meal. Everything I had this time, in this particular restaurant was excellent. There wasn’t one thing I didn’t like or wouldn’t order again. We started with Lobster. I saw when they took it out, they weigh it and then off to the kitchen. This was a big one so we had it 4 ways: First, sashimi — my first time eating like this and is delicious. They add gold flakes to it, and white relish. Second, steamed — I’ve had it like that in the past and don’t think there’s any way you can mess this up(unless you overcook it but, they know what they’re doing…) Third, in congee, which is like a rice soup. This one had shrimp, lobster, crab, and some vegetables. Very flavorful. Fourth, fried — a little too greasy for me but great taste! The Mantis Shrimp is another must have. Ours was steamed, very simple but so good. The Abalone is definitely another favorite. It’s filling, and was told not too easy to digest, so don’t go crazy ordering a lot but you must try it, if you haven’t. The Pink Clams are served with very thin clear noodles and garlic, making this a more familiar taste, and very welcoming. One of my friend had just come back from camping with her family, at a not so far island and came back with some type of clams. She brought them to the restaurant and they prepared them for us as well. The presentations are beautiful, especially the lobster and clams(you can see the pics), and service, although a little slow(they were busy), is very friendly. Place is casual and great for family dinners or with friends. When you are done with your meal, they bring out dessert, which is a mango pudding. I don’t really like mango but this was so good! Very light, not too sweet, perfect little treat to end the meal. I was told they usually serve it in the shape of an animal but, this time they were out so, they just served it in separate dishes for us, along with some oranges, they always end their meals with fruits. This is a great place to visit if in HK. It’s definitely an experience, a great way to mingle with the locals, and a way to try some great seafood, which is very popular with them. They have translated their menu to English as well, so, don’t worry, you will be just fine. Go and enjoy!
