Place rating: 3 Hong Kong
Top Deck is where I would bring my tourist friends for dinner, especially those who still have a perception of Hong Kong being a fisherman’s village and all Hong Kong girls wear pointy hats on the outside but are Suzie Wongs. That’s just about how clichéd I think this place is. Don’t get me wrong though, the owners did a great job converting the top level of a boat into a quaint western restaurant with a fantastic outdoor deck, and it is almost always a pleasant experience to take a small sampan to alight a larger, standing boat where you can dine under the stars and over Hong Kong’s typhoon shelter, now filled with monster yachts courtesy of the prestigious Aberdeen Marina Club next door. But the place is quite run down and it seemed that they just took the previous space(which is the third floor of the Chinese restaurant below), cleared out the round banquet tables, threw in some rickety western style tables and called it a day. The food is a total miss. The cuisine is predominantly western and they also offer an international buffet, but the food is usually overcooked and the quality of the buffet is likened to that of a 3-star hotel in Hong Kong. But I suppose the owners think that with a 6-star view and a 5-star tourist experience, no one will notice the mediocre food. But owners — you are dead wrong. The reason I gave you a third star is because of the unique experience– if you only had your food to rely on I would rate you much much lower.
