Delicious fried food! I loved the tonkatsu and the soft shell crab. The crab was probably the best I had anywhere. The restaurant is right above the Apple Store and across the Harbour Mall, which lately seems to be devoid of tourists(as with the rest of HK). Getting there around 11:30 would be the best to snag a booth.

Tonkichi serves one of the best tonkatsu in HK. The shop at CWB is the oldest in the chain, I believe. The pork is fried to perfect crispness but the meat remains tender. The seafood selections, prawns and oyster, are also good. The queue can sometimes be long during peak hours. The service, on this visit, is somewhat subpar. The wait for food after ordering was quite long. The waiter seemed half-hearted in his service.

Love this japanese pork cutlet place. it’s deep fried but it’s not oily at all plus unlimited salad supply. Their sauce is the secret here. they will give you a small bowl of sesame and ground it yourself and your choice of sauce on the table. I had one of their combo last time with assorted tempura and it’s great choice for 2 of you if you want to try little bit of everything. there is always a line anytime during the day so just be ready to wait.

This is a very popular tonkatsu & tempura deep fry restaurant for years and years. They have an enviable spot facing the Causeway Bay typhoon shelter where Jardine’s fires the noonday gun every day. You can hear it and see it from a window seat. The restaurant opens at noon sharp and again at 5. They break at 3pm. The set lunches include relishes, soup, main course and dessert are all very good. I often add a side of tofu to share. They always have someone walk around with a huge bowl of shredded cabbage for refills(it comes with the meal). My favorite is the tonkatsu tempura combination. Looks like their waiting lines are getting shorter compared with earlier years due to the numerous new shopping centers. It makes for a large lunch!

Tonkichi Tonkatsu, as its name suggests, specializes in tonkatsu, which means deep-fried pork cutlet. My mother and I decided to have lunch here when we were in Causeway Bay. There isn’t much variety in the lunch sets offered — most of the sets consist of something that’s deep fried, whether it be their signature pork chops, fish fillet, prawn or oysters. My mother got the pork chop set while I got the deep fried prawns and oysters with salmon sashimi. Before your food comes, you’re given a mortar and pestle to make your own sauce. Inside the mortar are some sesame seeds and you are to add sauce and grind it with the sesame until the sesame seeds are no longer visible. Personally I find this process really fun! I was pretty impressed with the food. The prawns were really nice and normally I don’t like cooked oysters, but this was a pleasant surprise! The breadcrumbs were a nice contrast to the, well, sliminess of the oysters. My salmon was good too and was quite fresh. My mother let me have some, and the pork was really, really tender. I think I’ll order that next time! One complaint with deep fried food like this is that I feel that it’s really filling. As good as it was, my mother and I both struggled with finishing our food! Including service charge, it’s a little less than $ 150 per set which is a bit on the pricy side for lunch, but it’s definitely worth a try!
