I asked my husband for his thoughts on the Mandarin cake shop: «the coffee is bloody good.» «That’s nice Honey, anything else you’d like to add? « “The coffee is very bloody good.» So, there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. Of course, it’s called the Mandarin cake shop, not the Mandarin coffee shop so there is a bit more to it than that. The first thing you notice when you spy the cake shop, is, ironically, the beautifully detailed works of sugary art that are on display at the front of the store. To be perfectly honest, I’m not even sure if they’re for sale, but I doubt all that work has been for nothing. On my last visit, the main display was a full sized wedding gown that looked ready to walk off down the aisle. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, moon cakes are bought, gifted and eaten across Hong Kong by the thousand. A lucky few of those — where people were smart enough to order well in advance, are the distinctive moon cakes from the Mandarin Cake shop. A treat indeed. But it needn’t be a special occasion to enjoy a treat from this venerable pillar sweet. The range of ‘everyday’ desserts, croissants, breads and pastries are all just as worth a trip.
