Place rating: 4 Hong Kong
Thai food has seen a surge in popularity in Ap Lei Chau these past few years. Thai Siam quickly moved into this spot when Erawan Thai Restaurant relocated to a bigger space down the road. For Hong Kong standards, I’d say the cuisine offered here is pretty decent, and the restaurant is run by a family with experience living in Thailand. Some dishes I’d recommend: — Curry crab – make sure to simultaneously order a side of naan(薄餅) to mop up all the flavorful sauce — Stir-fried morning glory – can’t really go wrong with this classic — Coconut fried rice, served in a coconut – they even pour out the coconut juice and serve it in a cup when the rice is served — Fish cakes – again, a classic that you can’t really go wrong with And even though I’m personally not a fan, I’m told that the raw shrimp is delicious – always fresh and offering a bite(with none of that slimy grossness). The skewers are okay, but are sometimes slightly overcooked, making the meat a bit tough and chewy. The restaurant is pretty small, so reservations are recommended. Seating often spills out onto the street, which is fine when the weather is cooler, but unbearable in the summer heat.
