Came here for restaurant week. Unfortunately, a comedy of errors ensued: * They couldn’t find my reservation * A waitress told me I had the wrong menu & I had to correct her * A piece of hair was in my dessert It just left me unimpressed. The steak and salmon cuts were great. The goodness stops there.

As any Hong Konger should be aware, the two weeks in August were the much-loved Dining City’s Restaurant Week — a chance for foodies who can’t fork the cash to try out some top-tier fine dining institutions at a fraction of the price, for two weeks. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take full advantage of the Restaurant Week options this month, as my responsibilities on the homefront had been taking up most of my time. No big — it just meant that I had to be super careful about which restaurant to go for — and Supergiant won the pool. I was initially attracted by its concept — Spanish tapas alongside Chinese mythological décor? Okay, you have my attention! I was also very intrigued by their ‘Super Happy Hour’ which lasts from 4pm to 1am, last orders at 12.30. Now THAT is my kind of happy hour. And then, of course, the menu, name-dropping foie gras, lobster, and lamb rack all on the same card, with a glass of red, white, or prosecco to boot. The food was fine but felt a little one-dimensional. The pumpkin soup was served with a small knob of foie gras, the lobster served with an avocado tartare and fancy olive oil caviar, and the lamb rack with a rather lacklustre polenta mash and ratatouille. For the price we were paying, it was very much worth it, but we would have appreciated a little more imagination or excitement in the dishes. Though, for a relatively new restaurant/hotel we were, by-and-large, impressed, and the well-trained and attentive service really made the night. Particularly, the restaurant manager kept coming to say hello and ask us how our meal was every other course, and the waiters and waitresses knew and explained every dish as it hit the table. We also noticed there was a private event going on near the bar and outdoor terrace. The outdoor area was good for 20 odd people, and was tastefully decorated with outdoor tables and seating. The canapes served looked pretty good too… Perhaps something to look into for that next big celebration?

Supergiant Tapas & Cocktail Bar is super cool! That’s it, review done… haha, only joking, let me tell you about it. Based in the Mira Moon Hotel in Wan Chai, the Supergiant Bar is a great venue for a small gathering of friends over decent gin and tonic, and a few light bites. The whole hotel is actually incredibly well decorated, and this of course extends to the bar. It has a wonderful modern Chinese décor, which in my mind, makes it look a little bit like a modern Shanghainese den of iniquity. My only criticism about the décor in the bar, is that it is a little bit cold, especially compared to the lush and plush lobby area, and it does slightly feel like you are standing in a corridor. The bar is known for its cocktails, it also has a number of beers, wines, and spirits on offer. My particular highlight of this bar, is that it has a good gin selection, a number of which are slightly unexpected. As well as drinks, the bar serves an amazing array of Spanish tapas dishes. My particular favourites include; the duck cigars(which unfortunately according to the manager now have to be called duck rolls, due to some legal issues around the use of the word cigar — such a shame), the cheeseburger sliders, and the amazing ham croquettes. Unfortunately for Mrs L, there isn’t a great vegetarian or fish selection. The tapas dishes are not particularly expensive, most are around HK$ 79. As well as the bar, there is a proper seated dining area around the corner, and a lovely large outside terrace, furnished specially for the smokers amongst us. I tend to find that this venue is better for slightly larger groups. If you are to have a small function here, of course you will have to book.
