This is one of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong. Whenever I have out-of-town guests come visit, I always bring them here without a question. This restaurant serves a very simple menu: Tonkastu. FOOD: It is heavenly divine. Yes, everything is pretty much fried but it is done with perfection. Crunch, crunch, crunch but you will never feel like your mouth is full of grease. The pork inside is succulent, tender, and juicy. And O.M.G. — don’t even get me talking about the shredded cabbage and the pickles! They are THEBEST! I never knew that shredded cabbage can be this delicious. It’s beyond my comprehension because I normally hate raw cabbage. The 2 dressings they offer for the salad, soy and sesame, are both of this world! The best part is that the salad, pickles, rice AND miso soup are ALLYOUCANEAT. Nothing beats that. SERVICE: The servers are very nice and they tend to your requests promptly. I must have requested to have the cabbage refilled about 5 times and each time, the bowls were filled up with a smile. Good service is hard to come by in Hong Kong. One more thing is that they offer a «frequent customer discount.» If you accumulate enough stamps, you can get $ 50 off your next meal(must be used within the next 6 months). Nice touch to show customer appreciation! ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant itself is downstairs. You might easily miss it because although there is a sign, you don’t see the restaurant until you walk down the stairs. But once you’re inside, you will feel relaxed and comfortable. The restaurant is spacious and nicely decorated in Japanese style. There are some private booths on one side and tables in the main area. The ceiling is high and the lights are well-lit. The environment is inviting, clean, and comfortable. Overall, Saboten is definitely a must-try on your list of Hong Kong restaurants! ==================== Review #178

Katsu and Curry, Cheese and Ham filled Katsu, Freshly ground sesame seed, beautiful dinning room. I’ve only been to the one on Parkview Green in Beijing but apparently it’s not listed. They have shabu as well.

Amazing. If you love fried pork, this is the place to go. With any meal set, you will get unlimited refills for their salad, soup and small dishes. For around HKD200, you couldn’t ask for more(especially around the Causeway Bay Area). However, I took off a star because of the mediocre service.

One of the best Katsu places I have been to outside of Japan. They have great traditional sets along side some newer style katsu sets. The sets will usually come with miso soup, rice(brown or white), unlimited shredded cabbage and pickles. It is definitely a filling and satisfying meal.

The previous reviews all do well to highlight the great food. I’d point out that the rolled pork with tart plum filling is very unique and definitely worth trying. Another plus of this restaurant is the large table sizes. Unlike many Hong Kong restaurants, there’s actually plenty of room at your table rather than being squeezed up next to another table.

This is a chain restaurant from japan and what I liked about this location was that the ambiance and décor is very nice and peaceful. I ordered oyako don, and I thought it was bit on the salty side. I enjoyed the all you can eat lettuce the most. The waitress was unfriendly. I enjoyed the one in Seoul better.

Was recommended by a Japanese friend who said this was very authentic. Had to give it a try. Got there right before 6 and a line was already forming. Opted for the traditional pork loin set which comes with miso, cabbage, pork loin and rice. Was presented very well and the place looks immaculate. Food came out quick and seemed made to perfection. I liked the fact that thy give you extra servings of rice and cabbage. Good experience and food was tasty.

This was probably one of the best places I ate at this trip to Hong Kong. I remember passing by this place the last few times I visited HK and drooling at the their posters like a creeper. So now I finally get to go in and EAT! It is very quiet here and even though it’s empty, they still request that you get out by a certain time to meet their reservation times, so naturally they will seat you right next to another table with a couple so close you could accidentally grab their hands. They charge you a hefty surcharge if you don’t eat your own complete meal and just eat appetizers or share a meal. So make sure you eat a meal here. Cabbage salad and pickled veggies are refillable, as are rice and miso soup and they were very prompt with the veggies without you even asking. But I didn’t come here for cabbage salad. I came here for KATSU. Curry Tenderloin Katsu was so awesome– curry was just right though I wish I had a tad bit more to go with my rice. Tenderloin was just right and not tough at all with a perfectly crisp exterior. Yum! Clay Pot Chicken(Oyakodon) was very delightful though the dish was quite shallow. I loved the soft egg and the light sauce. A bit on the pricey side for what it is but it is quality with a «fine dining» atmosphere, and by that I mean you actually get service because you tip them. Worth it for deliciously light and non-greasy katsu.
