I seriously stumbled upon this place because it was raining and I had no umbrella! What also caught my eye was that they had a set up of real display food. I mean how good can the side restaurants be on the sides of ladies market. I looked at the menu outside and couldn’t believe how cheap this sushi place was. I mean for $ 38 you get two pieces of sushi and for two pieces of tuna is $ 13? They even had lunch combos at a fair price. I mean what can I lose? So I went in and thank god there was people eating here. They have a pretty extensive menu ranging from sushi to ramen. I just stuck with the sushi of course. I only ordered the salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, and tuna. My favorite was the salmon and yellowtail! Both weren’t fishy and tasty! The red snapper had a funky texture that I couldn’t make out. The tuna was fishy and felt like it wasn’t fresh at all. My total only came out to $ 55 hkd! So I’m not complaining at all for average sushi.

I think I know what you are thinking — 4 stars for a restaurant behind one of the market stalls in Mong Kok? Surely the food can’t be hat good. Well you are correct, it’s not the most amazing food I’ve eaten, but nor is it the worst. It lies a little above average. The rating comes from the value for food. Less that $ 40 for a set lunch with a ice lemon tea is not as common is it once was, in fact I don’t know of any other Japanese restaurants that does that. I’ve been more times than I can count and every time at lunch. No matter how busy it is and it gets busy, there always seems to be a pair of chairs available. As is my norm once I find a decent dish on the menu its difficult for me to stray from it. The choice for me here is roasted chicken fillet, udon, and two little salmon sushis. I normally go with my girlfriend who orders the salmon sushi roll set and we share. By sharing I mean I take the food she can’t finish/too slow to finish. As one would expect the service has room for improvement, the food arrives at all different times, sushi first, an udon bowl a minute later, it’s a lucky draw. The food is good, I’ve never gotten food poisoning(touch wood), and my hunger has been sated. For $ 38 what more can I ask for. There are times I order the chicken and rice, and that’s only $ 33! Over the year that I lived in Yau Mai Tei Nanamoto became my go-to restaurant. I mean, I could buy the groceries, spend time and wasted effort trying to make something edible… or sit in relative peace and have the food delivered in front of my nose, for only $ 10 more expensive. This explains why I’ll never make it as a chef!
