This place continues to put out delicious waffles. The waffles are hot and delicious with a rich creamy filling of peanut butter and condensed milk. If you want stuffed waffles or the eggette waffles, this is the place to go on HK island. This is a favorite stop for me and my kids every time we are in HK.

I have been searching for the best gai dan zai(雞蛋仔) and gak zai beng(格仔餅) in HK for as long as I can remember. I used to get my gai dan zai fix in North Point, but after my friend dragged me out to Shau Kei Wan to 低調高手大街小食, I don’t think I’ll be able to go anywhere else. We arrived at around 2pm on a Saturday, and there was barely a line. It ended up raining and storming later(so we were stuck waiting outside the stall, lucky us!) — we even saw a man walk up in his rain-soaked slippers, clutching his rain-soaked umbrella, just to order these egg waffles. That’s pure dedication. Rain or shine, people still flock to this place. One waffle(either gai dan zai or gak zai beng) costs HK$ 15, and if you get two(one each is fine), it’s $ 28. My friend got us one of each so that I’d have a chance to try both. The gai dan zai came out first, piping hot, so fresh, so crispy, so PERFECT. Then it was the gak zai beng, which essentially translates to checkered biscuit/waffle. Half of it is slathered in peanut butter, the other half in condensed milk. So by the time it’s done, they just fold it over and chop it in half. Perfect for sharing between two people. One bite into it and I just knew, it was the best, hands down. The peanut-condensed milk waffle sandwich retained its crunchy structure with every bite. At other places, the waffle sandwiches would turn soggy, with the peanut butter and condensed milk juice oozing right out. But at 低調高手大街小食, you can be sure that up to the very last bite(it’s still very crunchy!), you’ll still taste that delicious goodness of peanut butter and condensed milk. They also have some tissue napkins and hand sanitizer on the left side of the shop for your convenience. Worth the trek if you ever find yourself on the Eastern side of the island!

This store front specializing in egg waffles is always busy with long line ups most of the time. Why, because their egg waffles are made to order and they taste so delicious when freshly made. The crispy crust and chewy interior is perfectly sweeten that it’s worth the wait in line. We also tried their grill-shaped waffle sandwich which is filled with peanut butter, condensed milk and butter. It was a little messy to eat the sandwich with the sweet mixture oozing out. This sandwich is best eaten right away as the mixture makes the waffle soggy. This place is a must try if you are in this area.

Everybody debates on which shop makes the best egg waffles in HK. Lots of people will say the place in North Point but I personally think this place makes them better. They’re perfectly crispy on the outside and holds together well in the bag(don’t you just hate it when individual balls break off themselves?) I’ve actually gone all the way across the island just so I could get one from this place. It’s located directly outside of one of the exits to the local MTR station and you’ll spot it easily because it’s the only place with a giant line. What’s also nice about this stand is that it’s in the middle of a small local plaza so there is plenty of space to sit and enjoy your food. The line still moves relatively fast, despite how many people are in it, because they’ll take your order pretty far in advance. They actually ask you while you’re far down the line(to the point where you may be on the other side of the tiny plaza/park) so they’ll have to shout. Then they cook multiple at a time to get all the orders done. It’s actually really impressive watching the guy making them because he’s so efficient about it. Aside from the popular spherical egg waffles, this place serves the grid-shaped waffles as well(格仔餅). I noticed a lot of people in line ordered it with peanut butter inside, so that would be a good alternative.

I tried the eggettes, and I think North Point Eggettes still wins my heart. These were definitely a close second though. I just don’t think it was quite as flavorful as North Point. Having said that, these were still crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. I liked that it wasn’t too sweet. Many of the other people were getting the waffles so I think I am going to try that next time.
