Kyoto Matcha Café is a restaurant I’m quite familiar with as the school I went to was walking distance from it, so my friends and I often had lunch there. The food there is not bad for its price, in my opinion, especially because their sets all come with a drink so you don’t have to order one separately. Although they are called the Kyoto MATCHA café, I think their matcha drinks are a little lacking on the matcha flavor so I usually just go for a hot or iced coffee. One of my favorite things to order is the udon with fried gyozas. You can choose either the clear or tomato soup base — I’ve not tried the tomato one, but my friends have and they like it. I really like the clear soup because it’s not too salty. I dislike soup bases that taste like MSG’s been dunked in it, which explains why I like their clear soup a lot. The udon is very nice too — it’s very soft but still chewy. The gyozas, though fried, aren’t very oily and there is a decent amount of meat inside too. Another one of my favorites is their fried pork chop omelette with rice. The pork chop is fried golden brown and doesn’t feel oily, and the egg omelette goes really well with the rice and meat — in fact, I try to balance every spoonful with rice, egg and some pork chop. The portion is quite big in my opinion and I’m usually left struggling to finish it all. I definitely recommend checking out Kyoto Matcha Café if you work in this area. It gets quite crowded around lunch times though so do know you’ll likely have to wait for a table. My only complaint is that the menu doesn’t change, and the options are quite limited, but apart from that the café is great if you’re looking for a decent but not over-the-top expensive lunch!
