Hong Kong Park

Spacious, gorgeous park located right in the centre of the hectic city. Everything is so well maintained and there are so many paths and walkways you can go through/​climb. There is no entrance fee here, and neither is there one into the teaware museum located just inside of the park. Beside most plants there are signs with their names in English, Latin (scientific name) and in Chinese, so they definitely made an effort in education the public about various species. In the summertime there are a dozen or so small food stalls selling overpriced ice cream or popsicles, but definitely worth it in the humid summer heat. Tons to see and their seasonal displays are always so beautiful, so if you’re in the city, it’s definitely worth it to check out for a visit. You can stay for a quick stroll of 15 minutes, or also take a day wandering around and admiring all their luscious greenery.
On Sundays though, this park is filled with a lot of hired help, and all the benches/​seats are crowded, so do beware of that.

Relaxing walk. Lots to see.

This is a must do for bird lovers there is a gigantic aviary here that is free to the public with a large variety of southeast asian birds freely flying around. The great thing about this place is the birds are so used to humans you don’t need a long telephoto lens to take photos a good zoom like 18 – 200 will easily work and there are numerous feeding stations located near the walkways which makes for a more interesting photo with the bird eating

Hong Kong Park is the perfect example (at least for me) that how often we fail to treasure the things we already have in our hands.
I’m old enough to remember the opening of Hong Kong Park, and my excitement when I first visited there. It got an aviary, a conservatory, the «vantage point», etc. Pretty easily accessible from Admiralty MTR station and buses (route 23 for instance), and it’s never crowded with tourists (excepts Sunday, where I’m always amazed how many Filipinos are actually in HK).
Then it came the time I studied at a high school right next to Hong Kong Park. It became my daily route to pass through it, and I got used to it. I stopped appreciating the nature and the great things about this Park. For 5 years I didn’t visit the aviary once nor conservatory once.
Then I grew up. I graduated from uni. I was busy with time every day and every year, and I had inevitably less and less time in my life. And occasionally I had a chance to come back to Hong Kong Park, I’d think, damn, I wished I spent more time here. Then I tried to get into to the conservatory but only to find that it closed at 5pm. And god knows when will be the next time I visit again.
Park’s not just for tourists. Let’s spend an afternoon enjoying your time here.

An unexpected park to find smack in the middle of Hong Kong’s Central neighborhood. It’s steep, with several large staircases and paths to climb. In parts where it’s manicured, it’s got handsome paths and ponds full of koi fish and turtles. In parts where it’s not manicured, it’s lush and almost jungly.
The highlight of the park appeared to me to be the Edward Youde Aviary, which is a very large netted space with an elevated wood pathway zig-​zagging through its treetops. There are hundreds of birds around. Most of the ones I saw were shy but a handful seem comfortable enough around people that they don’t fly off as you approach. We came here on a weekday morning and pretty much had the aviary to ourselves. I found myself lingering far longer than I’d expected, spotting bird after bird.
In another part of the park, there’s a Teaware Museum that’s free but not essential, and a tea house, Lok Cha, that is beautifully designed and offers some dim sum alongside a broad menu of teas. I didn’t try the dim sum, but the tea was swell and the tea house is a great place to chill for a bit. They have live music on Sundays.
I’d say this park is a must-​see for any tourist, even if you only pass through parts of it en route to the Peak Tram.

This is like a cultivated arboretum of sorts, with trees, shrubs and flowers correctly labelled by latin botanic names, and turtles and fish similarly identified. We visited during Chinese New Year when there were displays of new year celebrations all through. What a wonderful sanctuary in the middle of the city.

A gorgeous oasis in the middle of the city.

This is a truly marvelous urban park. Well designed with mature gardens, lush trees and vegetation, and good walking paths this park is ideal for a romantic stroll or a morning jog.
Well lighted, and multiple levels it feels safe to locals and visitors alike.

love it. a place of peace and relaxation in the middle of the concrete jungle. you’ll see people in their workout cloth training on the slope in the morning, office worker with ther lunch boxes on the bench at noon, and couples with their baby stroller late in the afternoon. there’s the waterfall, the green house, the aviary, the tea museum, the visual art center, the wedding registry, and the squash center, all scattered in this small plot of green land, fitting surprisingly well. it’s also a great shortcut from central to the malls in admiralty, and the starting point of a great hike along the central nature trial up to the peak.

With a wall of skyscrapers on one side and mountains on the other, Hong Kong Park makes for one of the more dramatic city centre green spaces I’ve been to.
I say ‘green spaces’, but what makes this eight hectare area different is its emphasis on the artificial — the fountain plaza, conservatory, aviary, man-​made ponds and waterfalls. So pretty much designed to look anything but natural! (But that’s no bad thing).
There are numerous paths throughout the landscape for you to amble along, up steps winding around the contours and trees.
The Flagstaff House Museum of Teaware (which as a staunch tea drinker I really wanted to visit) was closed when I was there and is on the northernmost tip of the park. It’s housed in the oldest colonial building in HK which is still in its original location.

The park is a nice respite from the bustling city, and it is directly adjacent to the Peak Tram, which makes it an ideal stop before climbing to Victoria Peak. Complete with ponds and water falls. Surrounding sky scrapers give this a mini-​Central Park (NYC) feel.

Lunch break in Admiralty can get a bit tricky: it’s (very) busy, loud and most places are cramped… it doesn’t actually feel like a break at all. Whenever the weather allows, I recommend you grab a take away and walk up to Hong Kong Park. Your break will actually feel as such. I would sit at a bench around the artificial lake and chill out.
The first time I went there for lunch, I stayed around the entrance, close to the Fountain Plaza. Even though it’s a touristic attraction, I noticed there weren’t too many people walking around and felt relaxing, but with an area of 8 hectares Hong Kong Park had a lot more to offer… as I found out later. As you carry on the path to the Clock Tower, you’ll leave the Tea Ware Museum and the K.S. Lo Gallery on your right and you’ll find the lovely lake and the waterfall. There are a few benches around it and in a sunny day it feels like a tropical oasis in the middle of Central.
From the lake you can see the Conservatory, just opposite you. I wasn’t planning to visit it on a day out in Central, but as I took a break from shopping, I decided to give it a go. Result: love! There are three ‘plant houses’ (display, humid and dry) of which I enjoyed the humid one the most (you’ll have to chance to see some coffee and cacao plants!).
The wonders of Hong Kong Park don’t stop there: if you’re still thirsty for more nature, pay a visit to the Aviary (more so if you have kids!) or chill at the Tai Chi Garden. You may be lucky enough and find a show going on at the Olympic Square…
A place for nature and sports lovers, kids, elderly people, busy office staff… seems to me like Hong Kong Park is a winner of a park!

I’ve been visiting Hong Kong Park ever since I was six years old. The 8-​hectare park hasn’t changed much, it still provides a quick detour from the city and connects me to nature. Most of the time, I take the entrance from Pacific Place that takes three flights of escalators along with a short walk.
The best view of the park is at the 30-​meter-​tall Vantage Point, next to the Edward Youde Aviary. In a way, Hong Kong Park kind of feels like Central Park in NYC, except you won’t find any bikers here. If you’re a history buff, do visit the Flagstaff House (where you can also buy various packs of tea) and the other houses, Rawlinson and Wavell, two important establishments during the British occupation.
I absolutely love the faux lake and waterfall, they are reminiscent of my childhood when I use to run around the park nary a worry in life. If you find yourself wanting some snacks, hit up the squash center that houses a bigger refreshment kiosk than those scattered in the park.
Fountain Plaza, which is near the Pacific Place entrance, is also a great place to visit and just sit down to relax. Ever wanted to see how a Greek theater looks like in person? Take a seat at Olympic Square which is a close replica.
I will never tire of going to this park (except for humid days — hah!) because it brings up so many memories of my childhood in Hong Kong. If you need a quick escape from the city, this is definitely one of the best places to go to, guaranteed.
