Hebe One o One really is one of a kind here– even by Saikung standards where good restaurants seem spring up everywhere. The look of the building was what caught my eye when I drove by it the first time– the restaurant is actually a house that is decorated in a colonial/European style with a yellow exterior and what seemed to be a huge balcony on the second floor. I honestly didn’t see the name of it as I was passing by it quite quickly but I insisted that I had to visit this place again. On getting to the restaurant it was apparent that the place is split into two distinct themes: the lower level is a bar with some sofas and outdoor seating whilst upstairs is more like a proper restaurant with– wait for it– aircond! That was a godsend for me because I am not one for the heat. The food menu is the same for upstairs and downstairs, it features what could only be said to be a hotel style dining experience– starters include oysters and foie gras, a small but good selection of salads. On my visit, the mains included a seafood marinara pasta, pan baked sea bass and an Australian lamb rump. We were quite suspcious before the dishes came because the prices, though not IFC prices, were a bit steep for the setting and the fact is that I(we) have never been here before. Once the food was served we were left in no doubt that the trip was worth it– the sea bass is something I would recommend to anyone who doesn’t like fish normally. The other two dishes were good also. Rumours have it the chef used to work in a hotel but obviously I cannot verify that; hotel or not though this guy could cook. Would I visit this place again? yes. Would I drive here? No. Because they have a huge drinks list and I am interested in trying out some of the wine next time.

Praise be. I have found my Hong Kong Sunday roast nirvana! Unfortunately, its in Sai Kung, which, for me at least is a bit of a trek. But if you happen to live /stay over that way, wait are you waiting for? Go! Go now! Not Sunday? Oh well, they do a pork roast on Saturdays that I’m sure would also be good. But, back to my Sunday dish of the day. Roast beef with all the trimmings. A very decent(and decent sized) Yorkshire pud; roast spuds — nice and crispy; handy portions of well-cooked(as in good, not well done as in overcooked) beef; and, yummy gravy. The price was good, HKD$ 168, and the serving size pretty much right. I didn’t have a starter, but did have room for dessert. I had the chocolate lava cake, which is apparently the house speciality. The rest of the menu also looked pretty tasty. The starter selection is mostly seafood with scallops, oysters and tiger prawns all on offer. Mains, I must admit I didn’t look too closely at after spotting the roast … but others at my table ate gnocchi and veggie burgers. Dessert I can be a bit more helpful. In addition to afore mentioned lava cake, other honourable mentions included; banoffi cheesecake, Eaton mess and crème brule. But for mine, the real revelation was the beer list. Craft beers from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Belgium were all on offer. I had my first Little Creatures Pale Ale outside the Antipodes, and it was good.
