To be honest, by American standards is this establishment a 5… absolutely not. But, by the standards of an American who finds herself living in Sheung Wan and needs to find some basic, trustworthy brands of proteins, veggies and grains she can trust… HELLYA… FUSIONISTHEBOMB! So come to discover a few things(it took about 30 days to figure this out entirely… I’m a slow learner, so hopefully another American can benefit from this faster than I did). In the labryinth corporate Giant of Watson’s, they have several tiered levels to their grocery division, with«ParknShop» being at the bottom(small, less product, no wine or beer, the basics of what you might call a neighborhood grocery store), «Fusion”(next level up, more product, much better selections than Park N Shop, wine & beer, sushi, deli case, etc) and then«Taste»(basically China’s version of Whole Foods, but not Whole Foods — if you are from America you know what that means) — the top tier of grocery’s in this company, bakery, cheese department, upper end wine store, huge deli, meat department, lots of variety). Taste in Hong Kong is not located close to me(they seem more scattered out in New Territories and there are only two in Hong Kong itself), so I was delighted to find Fusion around the corner in Sheung Wan. I walked by it a million times before I even knew it was there. There is a giant sign hanging over the street, but who is looking up? You see the little bakery and the escalator going to the second floor near the back. The entrance is unassuming and thus why I did not know it was there. So go through the bakery and head up the escalator. You will be tearful and happy for discovering this gem in the Sheung Wan hood. I suppose I eat anything and I am not a food snob, but rather an athlete and simply want to get the right foundational food things inside me and trust the brands and have some choices, even some organic choices where possible… and some options from places who produce food outside China(no offense China… but your track record on national standards for food regulations is not top ten, I hate to say). Anyway, Fusion is a great grocery store. Fresh sushi and the premade veggies from their hot counter has now become a staple of mine. Also, they have a relatively good produce area and also dairy galore of milk and yogurt. And let us not forget about their wine and beer section, where the selection is OK and you can by individual bottles of beer. The little bakery at the front when you depart… A treat for yourself maybe for the celebration of finding this Fusion store. Variety, stocked shelves, trusted worldwide brands. I know am a Fusion Fan! I don’t have a Whole Foods or Trader Joes to go to and I have to carry what I buy, so I have some added handicaps here in the food chain in Hong Kong. I would be a Taste Fan if it were closer, but in Fusion is a great pick for where I live and probably the best option in the Sheung Wan area. It is not as cheep as Chinese markets, but definatley cheaper than Marks and Spencer.
