Good for a happy hour drink. Their patio doors open up so you can sit outside or just be inside and get some fresh air. Their service is okay and the waiters/waitresses are pleasant.

We came here for happy hour on a Friday afternoon, and it was a great place to catch up. Their happy hour special is ½ off all draught beer from 3−7pm. Besides the beers they have on top, they have a large variety of bottled beers from around the world. I enjoy the tavern feel and décor of this place. I also love that they have a patio that opens out to Wellington Street. It’s a great way to enjoy the warmer weather and people watch. Lastly, Frites is a short walk from the E exit of the Sheung Wan MTR station.

We came here after being impressed by the website and we were pleased with our lunch here. I had the pork schnitzel with frites and my wife had half a kilo of mussels in the Hoegaarden broth. The schnitzel was the size of a large dinner plate and was thicker than I had been expecting — so it was definitely a hearty meal. The frites were an excellent level of crunchiness and I felt it was the right amount. The meal also comes with a coleslaw which paired nicely with the schnitzel. I had a 500ml glass of Hoegaarden beer which really hit the spot. There are plenty of other options on the menu which look attractive and I am confident that we will come back.

I’ve come to rely on Frites as a meeting spot that will please just about anyone — there’s plenty of space if you’re bringing a large group, they offer all kinds of food ranging from casual bar snacks to full-on steak dinner, and there’s the Belgians. About 70 Belgian beers, to be more precise! During happy hour which takes place from 3−7pm M-F, you’ll receive half off of all draught menu beers, house wine, and house spirits. Just know that when it comes to the draught beers, they many not be the ones you’d typically associate with true Belgians — but, you can drink Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, and Leffe on the kind-of-cheap if you’re into those beers. The Belgian beer snobs will probably scoff at these choices, but then again, Frites doesn’t really position itself as an inexpensive drinking hole. Gobs of money must have been poured into the décor and furniture, and the resulting ambiance is quite handsome. Speaking of money, the dinner offerings are definitely on the pricey side. For instance, the ½ kg portion of mussels will set you back $ 225. However, the bar snacks — love the fried gouda balls — will hold you over ’til dinner and are much more reasonably priced. Back to my main course, the beer! Frites features a few of my favorites which are somewhat difficult to source in Hong Kong, like Tripel Karmeliet, St. Bernardus Abt, and Saison Dupont. I’ve never paid as much as Frites is charging for these Belgian beauties, but I’m sure that we the patrons are picking up some of that spendy Central rent. Sill, that won’t keep me away from dropping in every so often to sip on a beautiful Belgian quad. Cheers!

FINALLY!!! Frites is back in Central! This location is not as prime or as Central(get it?) as their old location on Pottinger Street(no more cool Belgian monk statue outside! *sadface*), but it does the trick and isn’t very far off of the heavily beaten path. Super close to the Sheung Wan MTR stop, at the end of Wellington Street where it joins up with Queens Road. You come here to eat mussels and drink awesome Belgian beers. Don’t bother with anything else on the menu. If you’re still hungry after you eat your mussels, you can always go with the desserts, which are decent and will satisfy any sweet tooth. .. but maybe make the wiser decision and just have another Belgian(the Framboise Lambic is quite sweet as well and could serve as your dessert). The Laksa mussels are my favorite; they come marinated in a delicious lemongrass & coconut curry broth. A bit spicy, and hella delicious. This is hands down my favorite mussels broth EVER(and i’ve eaten more than my fair share of mussels). I’m dinging them one star because the bread served with the mussels isn’t really appropriate(it’s a buttered toasted slice of bread. .. when I’d really prefer a nice fresh baguette to dip into that delicious broth). Also, while the fries are decent, they might be frozen(not sure). .. in any event they don’t taste fresh-cut like other restaurants further east on Wellington Street. IMO, when you’re paying such a steep sum of money for a mussels pot($ 225 for ½ kilo; $ 375 for 1 kilo), the accompaniments MUST be on point. Rectify that, and I’ll gladly give this place 5 stars. Overall, Frites provides a solid Belgian gastropub experience.
