Came here early on a weekday, thank god there was no line up! I personally really enjoy eating at Dai Pai Dong because it brings back the most traditional HK eating style. 咸牛肉炒蛋五香肉丁公仔麵 — salty minced beef mixed in fried eggs with spicy braised beef brisket in instant noodles.(25HKD) The salty minced beef was mixed into the egg and the egg was stilll slightly runny and not fully cooked, just the way i like it. Generally when you go to restaurants ordering for the canned spicy braised beef brisket(五香肉丁), they give you tiny pieces but here, it was huge chunks. The sauce also added flavor to the noodles which was amazing. 豬扒公仔麵 — black pepper porkchop in instant noodles.(25HKD) The porkchop was cooked in black pepper sauce, and the sauce mixing in with the noodles tasted amazing. There was a lot of porkchop too! The porkchop meat wasn’t tough, but tender too. This was one of the cheapest yet tastiest meals I had in hong kong. Super tasty meal! Each bowl of noodles was only 25HKD, which comes to less than $ 4CDN, it cant get any better!

Adorably authentic dai pai dong in the middle of a rapidly-changing area. Their milk tea is a must-have(and available as a takeaway item): Nice and strong, made with the time-honored stocking method. Our kid grossed out when I’d described her milk tea as having filtered through a pantyhose, so don’t do that.

Awesome old school style HK café! Authentic from the chinese only menu pasted on the wall to the gruff old men serving us to the old plastic stools and rickety folding tables in the alleyway. Expect very simple fare here… think instant noodles with a fried egg and spam, toast with peanut butter drizzled with condensed milk, fried pork on noodles etc. The real star here is the milk tea(hot or cold)! Do not miss this! We happened to still be finishing up our meal just after they closed for the day at 3:30pm, and witnessed so many locals still popping by hoping to snag one. Luckily, they were able to get their fixes to-go…disaster averted!!! We must have done something right because one of the gruff waiters came over just as we were leaving, handed us two beautiful postcards and stomped away. The postcards were artistic renderings of the place! We thanked him and he barely acknowledged us. So old school! I love it! This place didn’t change my world but it certainly was a blast from the past. Make sure you or someone else can read chinese, or else you might have to resort to the«point and pray» method(ie: point nonchalantly to something random on the menu, pray that its edible…)
