To say the curry at Ah Lung kicks motherfucking ass is an understatement, this is hands down one of the BEST Pakistani style curry I’ve had! Props to my best buddy at Hong Kong for recommending this place to me a couple of years ago. The curry here is available in HOT, medium, and mild. The difference between HOT and medium is insane, and even a seasoned spicy fiend like yours truly find the HOT a bit too much(not quite as bad as the aguachile at Marisco Jalisco in L.A., but that was unearthly…) There is a LOT of onion in this curry and in my opinion it adds a lot of flavour. The same recipe has been used for over 40 years(older than me!) and fans can attest how awesome it tastes. While it might not be entirely authentic, with the taste altered to suit local tastes, this tastes better than many authentic curry done hindi style. Meaning some of the spice that we HK’er consider too heavy in taste or too aromatic are removed altogether or reduced in quantity. Halal food means the meats in the food are prepared in the proper muslim fashion, slaughtered with a quick slit to the throat without cutting into(and thus damaging) the spine after a proper prayer to the«one true god, ALLAH», and with blood drained. That is also the reason why you will not find the popular curry pork chop here as pigs are considered dirty. There are about 10 to 12 different ingredients you can choose for the curry including fish, beef, chicken, beef tendons, beef belly(beef brisket), tongue, eggs, etc. etc. There are also other preparations besides curry, such as the fresh tomatoes and sauce, which is actually pretty good. BUT, it really is all about the curry here. You can choose to just have the curry by itself, with rice or the salt roti. The salt roti here kindof sucks, but I am too cheap to add money for the sweet roti and the oily roti. I guess being Chinese pre-dispose us to the preference of rice. There are various Asian beers you can choose from but I lean towards the sweet stuff such as shandy or the Somersby Apple Cider(they have a new Pear Cider which I was curious about but ultimately did NOT order). Like most successful ventures in HK/China, there are other imitators. There is another AHLUNG right next to Ah Lung Pakistan Halal food. Supposedly a former employee stole their recipe and opened up the imitator restaurant with the landlord after the landlord forced them out of their old address(the real restaurant relocated next door) and re-opened the imitator at their old address. I refuse to give business to such ASSHOLES and you guys remember to visit the real one on the RIGHT side(i.e. the restaurant that is further up north). FUCK the unscrupulous ASSHOLES!
