We were visiting Winnipeg and had a real craving for Filipino food. We decided to try Kalan for lunch because our B&B host said she was familiar with the area, although not the restaurant, I am glad we went. From the outside, the place doesn’t look like much but inside it is clean, with seating for about 30 people. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And the food is exactly what you would expect when you want good Filipino food. The roasted pork(inihaw na baboy) was very tasty, as was the pork steak and the pinakbet(we had to have some vegetables). We ordered the 2 dish combination which meant you got unlimited rice and a drink with your meal at no extra cost. So between my wife and I, we had 4 dishes plus a side order of lumpia. To top it all, they brought out 2 cups of soup again without an extra charge. So we got, for the reasonable price we paid, a tasty Filipino meal, in such generous quantity that we did not eat anymore the rest of the day. I would definitely recommend Kalan.

My clan and I were craving some filipino food today. Went into Kalan to try it out. Upon walking in, my impression of the décor was exactly what one could expect from a small restaurant that was just starting out. A few tropical paintings here and there. Nothing too fancy, but it was very clean. One thing I absolutely hate about some places is walking into a restaurant and seeing dirty tables everywhere. Not the case here. Very clean place. Where this restaurant lacks in décor however, it makes up for in great food, plentiful portions, and suprisingly low price. Significant Other and I both ordered a 3 piece combo($ 8.99). Which essentially gets you 3 side dishes of your choice(there are plenty to choose from!) and unlimited white rice. Service is extremely quick, as all the food is premade and put out buffet-ish style. Sort of like those food court chinese restaurants. Just point out what you want and they will plate it for you. Now dont go thinking, that just because its all premade, you wont be getting top quality food. oh no. if you thought that way, go ahead and give yourself a slap upside the head. The food quality is actually quite excellent. And again, you get MASSIVE portions. I ordered up some Lechon Kawali(deep fried pork pieces, skin on), Kare Kare(a soupy dish made with vegetables, beef, and peanut butter), and Calderetta(beef chunks adorned with potatoes and bell peppers in a gravy like sauce). Again, UNLIMITED white rice… so naturally, being the rice lover that I am, I went ahead and built myself a glorious mountain of whitey goodness upon my plate. The lechon was cooked just right, with the skin being just crispy enough without being too hard while still maintaining a tender juicy layer of meat beneath. The kare-kare was flavorful. even more so with the bagoong(fermented shrimp) that was served alongside. Perfection. I’d imagine the Calderetta I ordered is of the same exceptional quality but as I’ve said… MASSIVE portions. I was already too stuffed to eat anymore. To sum up, Kalan has great value in that its only $ 8.99 for an amount of food that could easily be spread out over several meals. Service is fast and friendly. If you’re looking for a place to leave you feeling satisfied in every respect, look no further than Kalan. *burp*
