J & H has my favorite greek salad in the city. For the most part, I take my orders to go. Not due to anything other than wanting to watch movies in the comfort of my home(and sweats). The staff here are very welcoming and friendly. I see the same two or three people every time I go in, so I can assume they must be the family that owns the restaurant. I have only tried a few things on the menu, but I must say the greek salad and spanakopita are my favorite. I usually order the large greek salad to go. It is a great value, and comes with large pieces of fresh feta on top. It does have a huge amount of dressing on it though, so no worries about running out. An unassuming family run restaurant right on Portage, so you might miss it if you’re not paying attention. But, it’s certainly worth a stop in on the way home for a fresh homemade greek meal with none of the clean up.

Not being very familiar with west Portage, we just drove until we spotted a place to dine at. Greek food is always delicious so when I saw J&H Restaurant, I thought why not? The name itself doesn’t scream Greek but the blue awning on the front displayed in bold letters«Gyros, Mousaka, Souvlaki.» It’s a Greek family restaurant that serves up diner food. The interior probably hasn’t changed much since this restaurant first opened but the service is super warm and friendly. Though I have to add that the there isn’t the best ventilation system in the restaurant so there was a faint smokiness to the restaurant. I probably should’ve chosen the«famous» all day breakfast for $ 6.95 which includes 2 eggs, 6 pieces of bacon, pan fries, toast and jam. What a deal! But I was drawn in for Greek and that was what I ordered. I had the chicken gyro($ 9.99) — yes that’s only a gyro, nothing else. It felt a little pricey considering that the gyro wasn’t stuffed with a lot of chicken and there were no sides included. The grilled pita was delicious, it enveloped a skewer of nicely marinated chicken, lots of tzatziki, onions and tomatoes. The tzatziki was nice without being too garlicky. It wasn’t the best chicken gyro I’ve had but it did it’s job and it was super messy since the tomato juices and the sauce were all leaking out of the wrap! I ordered a side of fries($ 3.75), unfortunately it was very soggy. I think the fries needed to be fried twice so that was disappointing. The Greek platters — either gyros or souvlaki with the usual sides of potatoes and salad are a bit pricier than other Greek places ranging from $ 16.99-$ 19.99. So it seems like breakfast items are the way to go here as those were all priced well under $ 10.
