Quaint little spot in a quaint little neighborhood. Best fish and chips in Windsor? If so, Windsor is not doing well in the fish and chips market. The plate came with loads of fries and a rectangle slab of fish. Can’t say I’ve ever seen a rectangle fish before.

Heather Bell’s Fish & Chips has been around for over 100 years serving Fish and Chips. Sadly, it may be coming to an end. I have been to Heather Bell’s many many times. It is a small little place tucked away on Ottawa Street next to the old MCM. Windsor has no shortage of Fish & Chip restaurants and has more time tested one’s than Detroit. The original owner of Heather Bells came to Windsor from Scotland and the restaurant is named after the ship that brought him here. Aldea is the current owner and she talks of retiring soon, so Heather Bells may be a thing of the past soon. Aldea has had the restaurant for over 20 years. Everything is made from scratch, including the tartar sauce and coleslaw. Heather Bells does serve a awesome breakfast… it is not all just Fish & Chips, but the menu is small. I love her peameal breakfast and anytime I come here for breakfast, the place is filled with it’s «regulars». Heather Bells Fish & Chips is well known in Windsor… known for their fish & chips, because of their light batter. Only one type of fish is available — Halibut. And the Halibut rocks !! It is always cooked to perfection. The chips are always fresh cut. She also makes some of the best cake I have had. Her carrot cake with pineapple is something that rivals the best I have ever had… my grandmother made the best carrot cake I ever had, and Aldea makes it almost the same way… so moist… the trick is in the added pineapple juice. When I asked her about it, she confessed… lol I love her pies too. Cash Only !

The woman who runs this place is the sweetest person I’ve ever met in my life, and the food is delicious. She took like $ 6 off my meal for no reason other than I think she just wanted to be nice. Canadians are so nice. She said she will have to sell the place in the next year or so because her daughter doesn’t want to take over for her when she retires. That’s kinda sad considering she said it’s been there for over a hundred years, eh? I want to be Canadian.

Great fish and chips! Great experience! If you like fish and chips and are in the Detroit/Windsor area please try this place out. Perfect batter. Big piece of fish. Fresh cut fries. I can’t wait to try the homemade pie next time!

The fish could only have been fresher if they literally pulled it out of the water. Found this place only on Unilocal and wow. Quaint place to sit down and have a great home cooked meal. Next time I am in Canada I will go back. Don’t forget you pay in cash.

The hype on the grease less fried foods is true. I came here with my friend and I was so excited to try the fish and chips. I opted for home fries instead of fries. The fish came out and it was good with no grease. The home fries weren’t the best but I finished them by drowning it all in ketchup. My friend had a breakfast with two eggs over easy, toast, bacon, and home fries. We agree the home fries weren’t the best we’ve had. Also, for another piece of fish it’s like $ 7 which is ridiculous when it’s not even halibut. I believe she uses haddock? I’d go next door to Roast ‘N Toast for my fish and chips.

Located in a nondescript small shopping plaza, make a u-turn if you miss this place! Run by an older woman who has owned the spot for more than a decade, this is what made-from-scratch-by-hand is all about. Ordered a traditional fish n’ chips platter, and just to take it to the next level(and when in Canada) also added a side of gravy for my fries. Using mismatched plates, silverware, cups, tables and chairs(quirky but fun!) the platter arrived with two generous cod fillets over a bed of fries and a small cup of string-like cole slaw. The fish was cooked to perfection and hardly greasy at all… batter was crisp but not overly breaded meat. Tartar sauce was zesty and perfect. Table had the requisite ketchup and vinegar(for the fries), but I had the secret weapon… brown gravy! The gravy looked to be homemade and portion-controlled into old butter containers for quick re-heating and serving. The cause was thick and rich, perfect on the crisp fries. Only«watch out» moment… they are a cash-only establishment so come prepared! Will definitely return if I find myself across the Detroit bridge again.

I was in Detroit on business and my manager had not ever been to Canada. So, we went to Windsor. Of course I checked Unilocal for good reviews and saw this place. What a find! This is possibly the best Fish and Chips I have ever had. This includes several Fish and Chips I ate in Scotland. The fish is Halibut and you can taste the freshness. The proprietor actually cut up the fries as we ordered them. In addition to the freshness, I couldn’t help noticing the friendliness of the owner down to the customers. They were warm and welcoming even though they knew we were not from there. I asked if they take plastic and she said they take cash or wash dishes. Normally I would think it is a joke but both my manager and I think she was being sincere! Actually, one of the customers mentioned she already had her dishes washed from a customer earlier in the morning! From what I’ve been told, this place has been serving Fish and Chips for 70 years and it is no surprise why. From the service to quality, this place is amazing! The only potentially negative would be the décor. It is not much to look at. They let the service and quality of food speak for itself with no pretentiousness and I’m ok with that!

Best Fish And Chips In Windsor for 70 years or more(my father’s family used to walk here for Dinners). When we visit from Texas this and Tunnel BBQ are the two must visit places.

I have the same question as Johnny L., how does she do it… the lightest, freshest, tastiest fish and chips, second to none! Service — the nice elderly lady is very accommodating, allowed me to try a few smelts since I didn’t want to get a whole order. She is sweet and gentle, AND amazingly efficient at the same time, as she multi-tasks between taking order, cooking, handling phone-take out, and calmly chatting with her dine-in customers. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.

How did she do it? How did that sweet old lady serve me up an entire plate of fried food without any grease? Heather Bell’s is your standard old fashioned home cooked mom and pop place. Walking into this tiny little house is like walking into your grandma’s house for a meal. That’s exactly what it felt like coming here.(Except of course, you have to pay). This little gem is located on Ottawa Street and be careful you don’t drive right by it. It’s a small little house run by this sweet elderly lady who’s just genuinely friendly and takes care of you. The menu on their wall is a nice touch and offers up some decent breakfast items to go along with their specialty, Fish N Chips. My buddy and I came here to give this place a go. We ordered up the Fish N Chips and the Shrimp and Chips. Two full plates of fried food and no grease at all?! The hell? How did she do it? The Fish N Chips were spectacular! Easily the best Fish N Chips in Windsor. It’s very flaky and the batter isn’t too thick which I loved. The meat was good and the piece was fairly large. The crispiness of the batter worked well with how tender and flaky the fish was. The fried shrimp was good too. There was a good portion of them, but they weren’t large or anything. They tasted good and the batter wasn’t too overbearing either. The Fish N Chips is the real winner. Both dishes also come with a heaping handful of fries, tartar sauce, and coleslaw. The tartar sauce is homemade and is more«pickle-y» than others but I loved it. It was very tangy and sweet. The coleslaw was incredible. It’s extremely thinly cut cabbage soaked in this sweet coleslaw dressing. It was just good. Come for the Fish N Chips. If you’re like me and you miss having homecooked meals from Grandmas, stop by and grab a bite here. Spark up a conversation with the owner and see exactly why this place has been around for over 100 years! It’s a very cozy setting and the food is just downright good.

Heather Bell’s is my favorite place to get Fish and Chips in Windsor. Food — I always get the same thing pretty much. I find that, believe it or not, people screw up Fish and chips. It’s either too greasy, or the fish has a weird after taste, or you can tell that they don’t use good ingredients. None of the above are applicable to Heather Bells. There food always tastes good to me, and I love getting their bread when they have it! Service — The service here is the epitome of a a GOOD Mom and Pop place. It feels strangely home to eat here. The people are nice, and they really seem cheerful. I like going in and coloring! Cuz, in a way I’m still a kid at heart :) Restaurant — Pretty clean, no complaints. Overall — I would definitely recommend this place as a great Fish and Chips place.
