What a gem Sho Chiku is! Dropped in for a light dinner last night and was floored by the fresh-tasting Tobiko, mesmerized by the Tako and finally, sated by the Unagi. A menu filled with humour — Mr. Bean Roll — wrapped in yellow bean sheet; Jungle Roll, deep-fried banana, avocado, cucumber, topped with banana and house special sauce. Wow! This calls for a return visit with a posse to taste these intriguing special rolls. The dinner boxes being consumed by the guests next to me were eye-popping in their artistry. And, the owner did not realize a famous actor/musician was occupying the largest table, so the parade of dishes to that table was a bonus to view. Now I know what to order on my next visit. Comments from that table were«well, that’s an unusual combination, but really delicious!» — «wow, never had this done so well»(I used to eavesdrop in a former life) these comments from world travellers! When paying my bill, I asked her if she knew why she was so busy this night, and she replied, «no, sometimes we get very busy, and we are surprised!» Well, Sho Chiku, you are busy because your food is tasty and fresh, and everyone is equally welcome at your table. The 351 Crescent Beach bus from Bridgeport Station stops right at Thrift Street, walk a few steps and enjoy a great Japanese taste experience. Lots of street parking. Salvation Army Thrift shop located a few doors down for bargain hunters.

It’s really too bad that Kuroishi just up the road gets all the traffic, because Sho Chiku is one of the better sushi places in White Rock. The rolls here are always delicious and fresh. They offer black rice as well as regular, which doesn’t actually taste incredibly different, it’s more the novelty. Try one of the special house rolls, most of them are tasty and the ingredients are well put together. In addition to sushi, there are a few Korean dishes available, which from my experience are equally as tasty. The service is great, and the staff is always smiling and friendly. They even have punch cards for the frequent diner, X amount of stamps gets you a free something. I no longer live in the area, thus do not visit much anymore and I can’t remember what sort of free thing you actually get, but if my memory serves me, it’s something like a yam tempura roll or appetizer tempura. If you’re in the Rock with a desire for sushi, this is your place. Fresher food, friendlier service, and lower prices than Kuroishi, for sure!

We stopped in for sushi and I have to admit, the posters for the hot-dog roll were quite unappetizing. Although it did give us a good laugh! The menu left a bit to be desired. There was nothing that jumped out at us so we went with a few that sounded good, and some server recommendations. The sushi was okay, but everything seemed to have a lemon-y taste to it. The fish was delicious and fresh and the sushi was good overall. It definitely seemed like a popular place for local residents, however the décor could use a bit a of upgrading. Perhaps I was just turned off by the taped-up home print off of the hot-dog roll. But hey, perhaps after reading this review all you want is a deepfried sushi hot dog.

We are always welcomed so warmly, when we arrive at our favorite Japanese restaurant in White Rock. The food is consistently tasty, as we have experienced over the last 5 years we have been frequenting this place. We are not vegetarians but do love the the Tofu Teriyaki, which is flavorful, crispy on the outside, and then melts in your mouth. Tempura has a very light fluffy batter which we have rarely find elsewhere. We tried the deep fried California rolls last time, which we found a little heavy, so next time its back to the regular ones. Great restaurant.
