It’s been a while since I’ve been here. Last time I was here, they had sushi. However it appears that they now focus on ramen, rice bowls and other Japanese food. They still have some sashimi but I was actually hoping to get some sushi as it was really good. Alas, no sushi. The shiro ramen I had was ok. There’s another ramen place a few blocks away, Ramenger, which is better. The flavor is not spectacular, not a lot of items in the bowl and the size is average. It had pork, bean sprouts, 2 small shanghai bok choy and a few bamboo shoots. The service is quick, the staff is very friendly and it is still authentic. It is tucked away, just off of Kingsway so the location may not be the greatest and if you don’t know about it, you will probably miss it. There are a lot of restaurants across the street and nearby. Would I go back, that I am unsure of.

*set menu(combo) is back* which means I can enjoy teishoku style menu again :) They have sashimi, karaage, cod katsu, pork katsu, mackerel combo. :) I got tonkatsu combo and it comes with 4 vegetarian side dishes(tamago yaki, wakame, corn and kani kama salad and salad). Looks pretty and it was awesome :)

Quaint little shop tucked away off kingsway. Very friendly waitress, I had the potato croquette combo which I had never had before, it was so good! The sushi was pretty good. Great pricing!

Fantastic, authentic Japanese food and service! Plus it is hard to beat the value with large dinner combos starting at $ 9. Wish we had found this restaurant sooner. So nice to dine in a relaxed Japanese restaurant with great traditional food.

The second visit changed my view about the restaurant. I wouldn’t recommend it anymore to my friends. Don’t get me wrong. This restaurant is still very authentic Japanese cuisine in my oppinion. They have good services as well. It is just odd that the restaurant is not usually busy even during dinner time. Maybe because their location or the wide range of restaurant on kingsway? I guess that is why the food there is comparably expansive then similar restaurant(you pay around 5dollars more for the same amount of food you can get elsewhere). Now, these are not the reason why I turned to dislike the restaurant. My stomach was really upset with the tempura I ordered in the second time. In fact, it was so upset that I had to get up to throw up in the washroom during midnight. I highly doubt the oil they used for the deep fried items. Anyway, I was so disapointed based on the amount I paid and the pain I got.

I’ve been meaning to try this place for awhile. I rarely find a restaurant that has a cold noodle dish(one of my favourite things to eat) The cold noodles were tasty and chewy! Perfect for hot summer weather. The sushi though looked like they were thrown together … Very sloppy … And quite honestly look like they were made for a Barbie play set … VERY small pieces.

This place is owned by Japanese People, and the food tastes great! Better than any Japanese Restaurant I’ve been in Vancouver(In my knowledge). The only thing I don’t like is that they don’t have«sukiyaki Pot», which is my favorite food when I was traveling in Japan. But overall, it’s great! I recommend it to anyone who wants to try Japanese cuisine, and the price is affordable. My favorite is «sukiyaki Don». They put green onion, beef, toufu, onion and ETC on rice with a tasty Japanese Soy Sauce, yum! It costs about $ 9.89(tax included).

Very clean and the staff is very friendly, certainly not what I expected when I walked in. Lunch came quick, ordered one of the combo lunches and the tempura was hot and fresh not the type that has been sitting around. Perfect size for lunch! Will come back again to try some of the other lunch specials.

This is a casual restaurant on the side street off Kingsway. Small Family restaurant operated by Japanese Chef and served by very friendly Japanese staff. We ordered. Oyster Katsu — very good with the Panko breading Chopped scallop and negitoro Roll — authentic Japanese style Prawn tempura — not my type of batter Gyoza — tender skin, tasty morsels 2 scallop sushi from Hokkaido — very fresh, delicate, and price reasonably, will order it again if its available. They have a nice menu for bento boxes and a fresh board for specials. Street parking

After deciding where to eat, the boyfriend and I finally decided to try out this restaurant. We arrived around 2:15 not knowing that they close at 2:30pm. The lady was nice to let us sit down and order without rushing us. We ordered: chicken teriyaki combo spicy tuna roll bc roll deep fried oysters The food was fresh and authentic. The chicken teriyaki combo came in large portion that included tempera(2 prawns, 1 yam, 1 carrot), and miso soup. I was surprised how big the portion was. All that was enough to fill us up. Pro — they also accept Visa/Debit!

I have been eating at Vanya since I was a child. It was the first place I had sushi, first place I learned to use chopsticks and almost 20 years later it remains the same great food. The owners have changed over the years I think because the décor, the faces are all different but the food has always been the same. Good quality and completely authentic. If you are used to the standard chicken teriyaki you can find at any chain Japanese restaurant with a sweet thick sauce with at par chicken you will not like their chicken teriyaki because it is much different but in my opinion so much better. The sauce is perfect, not thick and sugary or out of a can. Although I am typically a bigger fan of the cooked food vs. sushi, I know their sushi is amazing. Fresh and tasty. Probably one of the few places that the California roll doesn’t taste generic like every other roll on he block. Their prices are great, in the 20 years it’s maybe changed less than $ 3 – 5. Very affordable. You can get full meal sets, similar to a bento box which is so filling… Enough for dinner and maybe a snack the next day for under $ 12. Staff are friendly and have great customer service. Parking and the restaurant itself is easily accessed. It’s just up the hill from Joyce sky train station. Truly one of my favourite Japanese restaurants, I hope it never changes!

I’ve been Van Ya for dinner twice and have been pleasantly surprised both times. Their décor isn’t anything spectacular, but once you look past that, this is a hidden gem that offers authentic Japanese cuisine in an area that appears to favour quantity over quality. I’ve tried their Oyako Don, udon, tempera, assorted sashimi, and their daily special(Sole fish) and the food has, for the most part, been fresh and not overly flavourful. For authentic Japanese food, their prices are reasonable, but I do wish that their portions would be bigger. Hidden on a street off Kingsway, Van Ya is easily overlooked but I highly recommend them if you are looking for great Japanese food in the Joyce-Collingwood area.

A japanese restaurant serves very little sushi and sashimi. Mostly set dinners with pan fried or deep fried food. Actually, I thought it was not so bad. However, what disappointed me is the fact that everything is too salty for my taste and the cod dinner I ordered wasn’t that great, the cod is not that fresh and salty.

Within walking distance from where we work, my wife have become lunchtime regulars at Van Ya. With the restaurant scene in Vancouver blooming and tipping over the edge of pretentiousness, here is a Japanese-owned restaurant that isn’t. Forget their non-existent deco, outdated signage and how it doesn’t feel like ‘other sushi places’, you can trust their consistency, authenticity and delicate flavours. My go-to dish from Van Ya is their daily lunch special, which is always fresh and changes with season, while my wife’s favourite is the katsu don and tofu salad. Although Van Ya’s portions are a bit small for me, especially if you order the teishoku meals, but the quality of the food is always fresh and very tasty, the way Japanese moms would make it at home. Hidden away from Kingsway and behind Royal bank, Van Ya is not easy to spot even if you’re parked right across from it. However, it is an unpolished gem in the middle of the Collingwood business district that we will always go back to.

I’m sitting here in 100F+ degree weather in Las Vegas day dreaming about my yearly trip to Vancouver, BC. Last year I stumbled across this place in my search for a real Japanese restaurant so I could tease my Japanese wife who was stuck at home in Vegas studying for a test. I decided that each night I was in Vancouver(three), I would eat Sushi as it’s better quality for less compared to Las Vegas. My first night brought me to Van Ya. Where I enjoyed Soba topped with shrimp tempura, a spicy tuna roll and a salmon roll, all of them washed down with a Saporo. I was in heaven. The sushi was fresh, the noodles were cooked just right and the dipping sauce was fantastic. The next night I ended up at a Chinese owned/run Sushi place that I ate at before. Had an OK meal. My last night in town had to be spent at Van Ya where I ordered a sashimi combo plate with some more tempura. This coming October I’m already planning a trip and Van Ya is definitely on the list of places to eat at.

My family and I have been searching for a good, authentic Japanese restaurant(especially considering our usual stand-by, Takara Bune on Victoria Dr., has switched owners), and Vanya may be just the place. Despite how close we live to this restaurant, we’ve only been here a few times, and not for many years. We stopped by for a late dinner recently, and were very pleased with our meal. I had the beef yakisoba, which was delicious. My dad had the spicy tuna combination dinner which was on special, and my mom had the chicken teriyaki combination dinner, which comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup, prawn and vegetable tempura, and a plate of chicken teriyaki. Portions are generous, the service is prompt and friendly, and the food is very reasonably priced.

I have been a fan of this place for almost twenty years! My parents would take us there when we were kids and it was always a yummy treat! I now live in Surrey but I have driven all the way into East Van to eat at Vanya. Prices are very reasonable too! Everyone who I take there for the first time rant and rave about it in a positive way! Yum!

Just went here not too long ago. As a vegetarian, they don’t have many items on the menu for me. As expected. They were very friendly and greeted me as soon as I came in. They did apologize for their lack of a veggie menu, but told me the few items they did have without meat. I ordered two orders of avocado rolls. They were good. but I wished they put a bit more avocado in. The rice is fine, maybe a tad too much vinegar though. It was nearly 7 dollars for the two orders, so I wish the portion size was a bit bigger. The restaurant itself looked clean, could use a couple of decorations though.

Having lived in Vancouver for so long, sometimes it makes one wonder, «Are there any actual Japanese restaurants in the Lower Mainland that is opened by none other than Japanese people and is decent in quality and pricing?» If you have wondered that like me, then allow me to present you to Van Ya Japanese Restaurant, a restaurant owned and run by Japanese people. The food quality is consistent, and decent. What I usually go for is the Unagi Don(Eel rice bowl), the Raamen or share a Sukiyaki with a bowl of rice with a friend. Appetizers consists of a variety of sushi/sashimi, gyoza, edamame… etc. My frequent favorites would be their BBQ squid(barbecued in a sauce of your choosing) and the Agadashi tofu(you’ll know what REAL Agadashi tofu is suppose to taste like once you eat here). Ingredients are fresh, as oppose to the Japanese restaurants opened by Chinese people who bake chopped up pieces of oysters in mayonnaise in recycled oyster shells, and deep fry(yes, like McDonalds) tofu in their fryer and calling it «Agadashi tofu». Definitely a good experience for genuine Japanese cuisine, beyond the raw fish. Overall, this is a good place to drop by for lunch or dinner if you’re ever in the neighborhood. Definitely not as cheap and gluttonous as AYCE would give you, but portions are decent, ingredients are fresh… and oh did I mention that some of their servers are exchange students from Japan(mostly girls)?
