Sadly this place has gone downhill. The coffee was disgusting. Like it sat on a warming plate all morning. What place in Vancouver doesn’t have an espresso machine??? The food was just so so. The waitress was a total hag. I felt like I was inconveniencing her by being there. The last time I was there was February but this was the last time I’ll go there.

The Whip is modern, unique, and a cute little place to make a pit stop for a quick snack and a beer.
Their prices for me don’t quite match the quality of the food, although the food isn’t horrible. I had the tomato soup and vegetarian linguine. Neither wowed me, yet the prices for the dishes were a little questionable.
They do have a good selection of local beers on draught which, if you know anything about me, is often times a deciding factor in whether I will enter through the door or not.
The service was good, but again, nothing memorable, nothing that would have me coming back for any reason.
Not too far of a walk from Main Street/​Science World station, and close enough to the business of Main Street’s community, The Whip is somewhere I’d go to again, if only because it’s simply convenient.

Can you say OVERRATED??? This place had decent brunch about 8 years ago but I haven’t been back in ages because the food is just bad. It’s really expensive and simply not worth it. Also, they have the worst tofu scramble ever! Ever heard of soy sauce? Geez Louise! If it tastes like crap then why are they serving it? Stop trying to be fancy and just make it taste good. Also, the drinks are ridiculously overpriced.

I like the whip. I like the patio, I like the variety of beers and I almost always like the service. I feel the like the food has it’s good days and it’s bad, but at the end of the day the whip is a staple in the area, even if it’s a bit rough around the edges!

Update on this review: my makers mark has now been served to me with dead small bugs floating at the bottom more then once. My fries are crispy ¹⁄₃ times when I order them. Food quality is poor overall. Cider on tap has a very interesting taste, perhaps its time to clean out the pipes? I still will go back BC it’s the only place with a decent patio around mount pleasant but I’ll be sticking to the bottled stuff.

Got the pierogi app it tasted of store bought frozen presidents choice. Overpriced nothing great

Came here after a show at the fox cabaret.
It was about 11pm, the place was busy but we were seated right away.
I liked the gallery/​bar atmosphere. They have a nice offering of beers. I ordered the veggie burger with fries which was delicious! The burger was massive and had a kick to it. The fries were served with a yummy garlic aioli. The food came out quick. Our service was good, they didn’t miss a beat.

Good menu, affordable, friendly staff, fast service… Never a line up for brunch which is great!!!

What can I say about this joint? Great service, brews (even a cask) and the BEST poutine anywhere. (Sorry Quebec)

Stopped by here with a girlfriend the other day. There’s just something about this place — a nostalgia; something comforting.
The inside is kitchy and homey, nice and open with tons of natural light. A good spot to have a drink and shoot the shit with your friends.
We ordered a couple cocktails ($ 11 each) and were surprised when we got full 12 oz glasses filled to the top. I mean I’m not complaining, but with that said it wasn’t the best bourbon sour I’ve ever had. Not bad, but not great, you know?
We ordered a side salad ($ 7) which was freaking MASSIVE. Totally worth every penny, and delicious. I just ordered it straight up but you can add protein for another $ 3. Pretty decent giving the massive portion sizes you get, and that my side salad was bigger than a full size salad I’d ordered at Tap & Barrell a couple of weeks before.
After a round of cocktails we moved onto the craft beer list and it’s just always the best. They have tons of local micro-​breweries on tap, so definitely check out the beer menu. Saturday is $ 1 off pints of draught, too, so extra bonus here. I had the Bomber Choqlette Porter and damn it was so good. Extra points for great beer selection.
One of my favourite parts about this spot is always the people watching. There are so many different types of people here every time. We had a family across from us, an elderly couple on a date, a bunch of hipsters in the corner, some kids with mohawks in the other corner. It’s awesome. Super eclectic and a nice quiet spot off just off the beaten path.
Also — Pro Tip: Save room for dessert. Two person cookie = the bomb.

If your looking for bad service, old fried crunchy potato’s found on the bottom of a deep fryer on your plate & floaters in your coffee. The you found the perfect place!!!
We attended brunch here on Saturday. Lets just say the waitresses definitely need to be re-​trained, The cooks need to back to school and the owner should really sit back on look at his staff work.
Even the people sitting at the table next to us where complaining… It’s that bad folks. I don’t even want to get into specific details about the food that was served or what the waitress told us. I would have to make this post 3 pages long unfortunately.
I’m so disappointed that I now regret even leaving a 5% tip.
We will not be going back. Nice place, but its not a proper running restaurant.

My friend and I both went for the lighter fare: salads.
His had fantastically toasted perstashios
Great food in exact portions in an interesting venue. The patio gets quite busy so be prepared to wait once seated. Speaker placement inside the restaurant makes some spots less than ideal if you hope to have a conversation.

This review is about the food. It’s pretty generic bar food. The first time I went to the Whip, I got their beef dip. It was generously portioned, and I was able to get half yam fries and half salad on the side without extra charge. The beef was pretty tender, and the buns where buttery and Crispy. The whole thing was on the salty side, alone or with dip. But I did enjoy it.
The second time I went I got their cod sandwich that everyone recommended. Again, very good portion, with 2 pieces of cod inside. But it lacked sauces and there was too little slaw in the sandwich. Overall the whole thing was kinda bland, and a bit greasy.

I spent quite a bit of time at The Whip, first out on their little patio eating lunch and then inside doing a bit of work. A few things that made me a fan of this place…
+ The veggie burger. Made with beets, black beans, and carrots, topped with a sweet chili glaze and chipotle aioli it was one of the best veggie burgers I’ve had.
+ The fact that they let you choose half fries and half salad with your burgers. I love this option.
+ Our server who was charming and helpful and did not bat an eye at whatever we ordered or when we moved.
During the day when we were there it was quiet and calm, which was a great atmosphere for our working/​meeting needs. I would definitely be happy to head back and order another veggie burger, or perhaps try one of their enticing brunch options!

I’m kind of surprised at all the negative reviews.
Maybe they’ve had a turnover in staff?
I came here today for brunch, I live nearby and figured I’d try something new. The building seems pretty old and it’s a small restaurant but they make really good use of the space.
Service was ⁵⁄₅. The lady was really kind; friendly but not invasive. I think she was working by herself, and she was doing a great job managing all the tables with a smile.
Food was ⁵⁄₅. We both got the «Chowtown;» 3 eggs scrambled with toast, whip hash (yam and potato hashbrowns), bacon, and a waffle.
Hands down the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The bacon was perfectly crisp. The toast was fresh and had real butter. The whip hash was better than I’d expected. And the berry compote and fresh real whip on the waffle was damn good. The chef (s) that cooked this up actually gave a shit and took the time to make it absolutely perfect.
Price ⁵⁄₅. For the two huge meals and a coffee it was barely $ 25.
I’ve brunched at more restaurants than I can remember, and this one was by far the best experience I’ve had.

I had the whip burger. It was decent, nothing mind blowing. The yam fries however were absolutely tasty!
The service was very slow. I was there on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was packed yet there were only 3 servers. We were waiting a while before we could pay our bill. The servers were all very friendly, I just wish there were more of them to make it a better experience for everyone.

This place is good. I’m not sure if it’s worth lining up for 1.5h good, but I’d go there again for sure.
My partner and I wanted to go somewhere to watch the game and get some food. When we arrived, the wait times in the actual restaurant were between 1 – 2 hours. The bar area is small, but there was just enough space for the two of us to squeeze in.
Sitting at the bar, I felt bad just getting water, so I ordered a beer for my partner and I asked the bartender how gross the non-​alcoholic beer was. He joked with me and gave it to me, stating that if I didn’t like it/didn’t drink it, he wouldn’t charge me for it. I thought that was really nice of him and it left me with a solid first impression.
We both ordered burgers and poutine. It took a while to get out, but we were there to watch the game so it didn’t matter to us anyway. The place was evidently packed and we could see into the kitchen to know they weren’t just back there twiddling their thumbs. Food came out and it was tasty. I couldn’t finish all of it, but what I did eat, I enjoyed.
The only discrepancy that I noticed was that at some point, the stout on tap started pouring out pure foam. The bartender was obviously frustrated and trying to serve it (by letting it settle for a looooooooooooong time), but I feel like it probably wasn’t tasting to it’s regular standard. I can’t vouch for that, but I know I was put off a little seeing it so I’d imagine if those ordering saw it, they would be too. The manager came in (off shift) and instead of addressing the issue or making some call to stop serving, he sat at the bar and ordered himself drinks and food. As someone in management myself, I would have taken the 5 minutes to see what was happening or at least made an executive decision to help the bartender who was struggling with it.
My personal experience was good, however, so it still gets 4 stars out of me.

I first came to the Whip with one of my friends after work since Brassneck Brewery had a line out the door. The Whip has a neat hipster vibe, and has a fantastic drink list. They offer plenty of local beers and ciders, as well as a respectable selection of hard liquor and scotch. I opted to have the taco salad for dinner, and it was great! The service was decent considering the pub was so busy. The only complaint I have is that the bathroom is a bit of an adventure to get to after a few ciders, and isn’t very clean.
Since my first experience at the Whip was so pleasant, I decided to take my husband here for brunch. However, the service was awful. I have a feeling the waitress didn’t feel like we were worth her time since we didn’t order any alcohol. My husband had something gross in his coffee cup and it took ages to finally flag down another server to get a new one. The food itself was pretty good, and I’m especially a fan of their sweet potato hash browns. I also recommend their chipotle breakfast wrap. However, the terrible service just left a poor taste in my mouth.
I would recommend the Whip in the evening for some drinks with friends, but I unfortunately didn’t find it as great as many other people seem to.

The Whip is a great go-​to for tasty local beers, great art and décor, and a lively place to catch up with friends. It is loud once it gets full, so be prepared! On a sunny day the patio is total perfection (other than being a bit cramped!) so grab a seat out there if you can.
The beer menu is great, and their rotating taps are always something fun. They only advertise their 16oz and 20oz sizes, but they also have a 12oz if you’re feeling like less beer (which, I know, rarely happens!)
The Whip’s food is a little pricier than average, so it’s good for a bit of a splurge. The poutine is great, as are their salads, and the veggie sandwich is super delicious! Garlic aioli? YES PLEASE!
Definitely stop in — it’s a little off the beaten track, but it’s a great spot to grab a pint and spend an evening relaxing!

I like how convenient this place is but I’ve heard stories from people who worked here that it is eat infested and filthy.
But… The beer taps should be clean, right?
Who knows…
I’m still giving it an «a-​ok» though. So that tells you how much I like a low key beer place.
