I think I’m going stick to traditional sushi instead of whatever this fusion stuff.
What I liked: The rolls were unique, there were a lot of choices, the names of the rolls gave us a good laugh
What I didn’t like: It’s so loud in there, the decorations are super peculiar, the table for 2 I sat at was extremely close to the tables around it.
As for the sushi, all of it was either deep fried or otherwise incredible oily and drowned in mayo. I basically wasn’t able to taste the fish or any freshness whatsoever because it was drowned in oil. I also left feeling very heavy and like I just ate fish and chips, which is horrible cause sushi is supposed to be my «healthy» go to. Anyway, I suppose this kind of place isn’t catered to people like me, whose a raving fan of the freshest sushi.

The Good:
— Fun, kitschy and somewhat chaotic décor
— Decent selection of cocktails
The Bad:
— Food wasn’t particularly good quality. Sushi didn’t taste fresh and the roll fell to pieces the moment it was picked up.
— Service was lacklustre.
— Music was very loud, making it difficult to hear each other or the server.

Solid vegetarian sushi selection! I was wishing for less cream cheese ’cause I find that gross in my rolls, but otherwise a great place. A little girl walked around with her mouth open, staring at the décor, saying «This is amazing, I love this place!» I agree :)

Went here for dinner with my friend tonight. She had suggested the place because of the cool atmosphere and even though the décor was very eclectic, it did little to make up for the very poor service. Although the food was alright our waitress was simply unpleasant. It sucks when shitty service ruins your entire experience.

One of the best sushi restaurant I have ever tried! The decoration is funky, the sushis are excellent and the service awesome! There is a huge choice of sushis too!!! A must try!!!

Going to the Eatery is basically going to Japan and experiencing a sample of Japan’s crazy culture without having to go to Japan. I went here with some of my friends and I was definitely hungry for some sushi. This is one of those places where you would definitely not want go for your nigiri sushi, but it is definitely a place where you would want to hang out with your hipster squad or your sushi crew if you are on the hunt for some funky food and good alcohol.
I was here a while ago so I want to give you my thoughts on this place. I ordered a few rolls from this place. They were the San Francisco, Rainbow Roll and S & M roll. The quality of the food was enough it will satisfy your hunger, but the taste remains average.
I would recommend coming here if you do want to experience the funky side of Japanese culture with a bit of modern twist to it, but do not expect Michelin quality sushi though. They do have a variety of meals from donburis to sashimis to sushi rolls to wings, curry and other meals. This is also one of the places where you want to try out many different combinations of alcohol.

The food is great and the decoration looks pretty funny. The waitress gave us a very good derive. She was fast and friendly.
Just a minus point, the restaurant is a bit experience and could be refresh by having a small renovation to look a bit cleaner.
But in overall it is a good spot to eat fusion food

Loved The Eatery. This was recommended to me as a place to bring my out of town visitor and it did not disappoint. First of all you def have to be in the mood for a fun atmosphere. This delivered in a big way and apparently I’m a sucker for novelty décor. We came just before the dinner rush which was a happy accident… When we left the line was out the door. The food was delicious. Since there was three of us it was nice to order a bunch of things to try. The volcano roll was certainly a fave. The service was friendly, but the poor servers were ran off their feet. Def didn’t seem to have enough bodies to support how busy. This became evident toward the end of our meal where we did wait quite some time for plates to be cleared and a longer wait to pay our bill. That being said we were full, happy and enjoying the vibe of the place so it was all good.

The Eatery is to sushi what the Grouse Grind is to hiking. It’s inexplicably popular largely because it’s well known and a novelty, only people who aren’t in the know go here, maybe it used to be cool but it certainly isn’t anymore, and there are so many better options out there. When I first came to Vancouver from Toronto The Eatery was the first restaurant I ate at (the next day I did the Grouse Grind!) and I thought it was awesome, like a cool bar that also served good sushi. Now that I’ve been living in Vancouver for awhile, I have higher sushi standards and wouldn’t consider visiting The Eatery. Do yourself a favour, go for quality over novelty and hit up Green Leaf Sushi across the street.

Not sure about this place. Funky décor, food is ok, drinks are good. I’m not really a big fan of roll sushi with lots of sauce. Minimalist is more of my taste. Just seafood and rice.

I give this place a 3 star bases on the atmosphere and design of the place. Food was really meh.
I was here like about a week ago with a friend because we’ve heard of some good things about them. When we got there first thing I thought of was did my friend just take me to a pub for dinner. Not till I walked in that I noticed they actually serve Japanese food. Interesting way to present sushi in a pub kinda place and we’re not talking about Japanese pub style. We’re talking about Western style pub.
We were seated about 2 minutes after arriving at the place. As much as it was pretty dim but I did notice that the table was kinda dirty. Like the table was sticky to lean on and the cups and plates they gave us were dirty. We switched it out a few times with the waitress. The menu had a large selection of food and drinks. It was a bit overwhelming to me.
We ordered a few dishes to share. We had beef yaki udon, marinated salmon sashimi, ebi sunomono, tuna tataki, volcano roll and captain crunch roll. The beef yaki udon was really salty and it wasn’t well mixed either. Marinated salmon sashimi looked weird. They did use wild salmon but it was sitting on top of some green watery stuff that I didn’t dare to touch. Ebi sunomono didn’t have enough vinegar. Tuna tataki had sesame seed that I couldn’t eat. Both rolls were really good though. Like there was enough sauce and filling in it.
Overall, the place has a good gimmick to it but not worth the money or the travel distance for me considering I feel like I could get better sushi elsewhere.

We were in the area and felt like eating sushi so we decided to go have early dinner in this very interesting place.
It was my first time coming to this restaurant and I had mixed feelings when I entered the place. It was dark and somewhat creepy, in an artistic way I guess. Lots of sea monster-​like creatures hanging from the ceiling with different coloured led lights and other decorative art hanging on the walls. I don’t mind them at all, they’re kinda cool especially the Astro Boy booth/​table that’s located at the centre of the room. One thing, I just wish its a tiny bit brighter so people can see what they’re eating.
They have wide selection of sushi and other dishes. It’s more of a fusion, non traditional Japanese restaurant but the food is pretty decent. I loved the prawn tempura which was lightly battered and crispy! We also ordered for the torched salmon sushi. It was very delicious and my favourite so far. The green hornets was good too! A combination of tempura, avocado and mango. The sweetness of the mango popped and made the dish extra flavourful! However, I wasn’t a fan of the San Francisco. It was made of crab, avocado, topped with salmon drizzled in Japanese mayo. The mayo sauce was just too much for my liking and overpowered the dish itself.
All together, it was a very good dining experience. Our server could use a little smile and friendliness though coz it felt like she was there but her mind was somewhere else. She was quite attentive and the food came fast nonetheless so it’s all good. Will definitely come back for more!

A unique, funky, hole in the wall experience.
When I walked in, I was sure I had entered a nightclub. The Eatery was fully equipped with black lights, hip décor, and loud speakers blaring top 40 music. After we were seated, I started making my way through the expansive menu selection; it was filled with interesting sushi options (have you had a Drunken Monkey or Electric Banana???) and many other dishes. I started negotiating our sushi splitting terms with my friend. My voice strained in competition with the blaring music. Don’t worry though, I won.
The food we received was tasty; I’d give it a ⁴⁄₅. The service wasn’t a ⁴⁄₅ though. And the seating was pretty cramped. I had to restrict my elbow movements as to not accidentally knock out the random guy next to me while on his first date.
Overall, the whole experience was interesting. If you decide to eat here, come ready to indulge in interesting food and dance in your seats.

Must go at least once to check out the décor and food!
My friends and I ordered a few different dishes and rolls to share and everything was delicious. We ordered: san fran roll, volcano roll, spicy salmon crunch roll and honey garlic chicken wings. The San Fran roll was by far my favourite — crab, avocado and baked salmon with spicy mayo on top? HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG?! The honey garlic wings were finger lickin’ good. I was so surprised with the amount of flavour in all the rolls and dishes we had.
The décor was funky, they had a DJ for the night and the waitress was really attentive — they even gave me a «miso horny» thong for free since it was my birthday. Music was a tad loud, but had an amazing experience and food was great.

Wow. Forgot how fun this place was. Wicked food. Fun music. Super cool décor. Try the Sizzling Cow. And the Fried Bacon for sure.
Palace was totally slammed. And still only 6 min to get a table.
Kid friendly also. At least for teens.

The Eatery. A funky staple place spot for sushi. I’ve known this place for over a decade, and it does not disappoint.
Tonight, we had a few different rolls, each one satisfying. They had a few specials we tried out. I enjoyed the Devil’s tail, which included some spicy tuna, and a crunchy salmon roll. Yum! Both rolls hit the spot. The sushi is fresh, flavorfully unique and designed with funk. I feel like I’m eating sushi but with a bit of an edgy kick. I recommend coming here if you live sushi and are not afraid to try new tastes.
The atmosphere is great. It’s very comfortable, dark and ambient with the fluorescent lighting. It’s as if Andy Warhol and David Bowie would be certain to dine here together. They should’ve dined here. Even the menu has cool font they would appreciate.
If you want, you can buy some funky t-​shirts of folk, such as David Bowie or Elvis. I was tempted, but I couldn’t bring myself to wear a shirt that says, «miso horny.» :)
As for the service? It’s great. The staff is right on your order, and the food comes out fast. They know what they’re doing here. It draws a young university crowd, but it invites others as well. There’s a reason this establishment has lasted this long. Thanks, Eatery.

The only regret I feel about The Eatery is not bringing my San Francisco friends here to try the fun combinations of mango/​tempura/​beet/​plantains that is the vegetarian sushi menu. What a terribly fun place to spend a late night and gawk at the tacky and colorful décor.
My boyfriend and I were in the mood to split four rolls. In order of most delicious: I Love You roll (crunchy tempura topping, mango, asparagus), John Lennon (healthier avocado/​veggie roll topped with spicy peanut) Beet It (Beets with avocado and tempura yam) and the PANAMA (our favorite– warm tempura plantains, cream cheese, avocado and some veggies). These were definitely out of the norm and worth trying. Our order for two including a soda came to $ 30.
Only complaint I can voice is that service was oddly rushed. We felt inclined to eat, digest and GTFO within a 30-​minute window because our server was looming like a hawk, cleaning our plates out of the way before I could finish my last bite. Next immediately was the bill. It’s like she was eager to get out of the joint herself and it definitely translated as rushed and uncomfortable to us (even though we are very fast eaters!)
We will definitely be back to try more rolls and some of their drink specials. I really dig it. I hope all the «miso horny» jokes don’t offend anyone…

This is like a roll paradise place. The amount of rolls selections they have is amazing. As well they are super tasty. They do have the other really good things like the Japanese pizza etc. I used to come here quite often with friends because it’s a pretty hip place. Opens late. It can be a bit dark inside.
The décor is interesting. its focus is on astro boys weird animation or weird things (you will understand when you go there). The place is loud. It is located out pretty far west so location wise might not be that great when people in the neighbourhood tends to sleep early.

The Eatery and their staff are on point. I ordered a large platter — one of their bigger combos and had arranged to have it ready at a certain time. When I arrived, I was informed that the time had been incorrectly recorded and my food wasn’t ready. I was told to return in an hour. Sounds like a bad review, ya? Wrong. I live only a few blocks away and it was a beautiful day so I had no problems with a small wait. I was called just as I was returning home (about 25 minutes later) and the food was ready! When I arrived, the manager was extremely apologetic and not only did he credit me my entire meal ($ 75) but gave me a gift card for a return visit.
As always, the creativity in the rolls is admired. There are very few here that I have not enjoyed. I will always promote this place along with the sister location «the general public».
The staff more than recovered with flair, definitely retained my business.
On busier nights, don’t worry about waiting, you’ll be seated in a heated outdoor patio area — no freezing outdoor waits.

I have been wanting to come here since a friend mentioned it back in May. So after hiking with my friend J, we knew we had to come here for a post workout feast.
We went yesterday, a Saturday, so there was obviously a wait. Roughly 15 – 20 minutes. Not bad for a weekend.
The layout of this place is crazy. It was dark when we went, so inside it was neon everything. There were what looked like paper mache animal creatures hanging from the ceiling (sharks, giant squid, dolphin, etc.) and skateboards (I think?) along the walls with paintings of various people in neon paint. There were also Christmas lights strung around some of the seating areas. I can see why people want to visit this place.
We both ordered miso soup (it was meh, I’ve had better), veggie gyoza (excellent, the sauce it was sitting in complemented it well), I ordered the tofu roll and the beautiful roll (avo, scallop, smoked salmon on top). My rolls were meh, kind of bland and weren’t really doing it for me. J ordered Japanese curry with veggies and tofu. She loved it, I tried some and liked it a lot too. I also ordered a lychee martini which was strong and flavorful (the best kind of drink if you ask me!) Unfortunately, I don’t have photos of my food as the flash going off was just the flashlight app on my phone and not my camera flash… awkward.
We split a sundae for dessert which was mostly whipped cream it seemed. Overall, it was a cool place to try. The food was just okay though. I feel like this place gets hyped up because of the crazy layout more than the food. I would come back, but I would order a dish as apposed to sushi rolls (ie: udon, curry, etc.) I would recommend trying one of their martinis and plan on trying their sake margaritas next time.
