Update: Cook changed, not as good these days. Bennys! We’ve been coming here for brunch on weekends for over a year. The Bennys with salad and mustard vinaigrette home potatoes in consistently excellent. Brunch is now only until 1pm now. Free wifi too. My sig other is fussy about coffee and he doesn’t mind the brew

The jokes are endless, I love the name of this place. I have been wanting to go here ever since it opened just so I could finally«check in» to the Beaver and Mullet. I’m finally in the Beaver! The BF and I stopped in here for brunch to unfortunately discover that brunch ends at 1pm. Who the heck has brunch that early on the weekend, especially at a pub? We have since come to the conclusion that we will never be able to eat brunch there. I decided to stick to my egg craving and go for the quiche with a side of the soup du jour which was tomato. The BF was down with a breakfast cesar and the mac n cheese. When you order the mac n cheese you have the option of picking three different things to put in it. So you can pick three cheeses, or a veggie and two cheeses, or even one meat, one veggie, and one cheese. I like this idea very much, especially because you can get jalepenos… next time Gadget, next time. My quiche was yummy, the crust was nice and soft but the cheese on top could have been cooked slightly less, it was a little more crunchy than I like, and the soup was a nice side. The BF’s mac n cheese was huge, and topped with crunchy breadcrumbs. I got some Frank’s Red Hot from the kitchen(I guess they don’t usually keep it out for customers) so I was a happy camper. The only thing I didn’t really love was that they leave all the doors open and whatnot cuz they have a patio. Yea its still sunny out and its October, but that don’t mean it ain’t cold, and I don’t actually have a mullet to keep my neck warm and I sure as shit ain’t growing one. All in all, I’d totally hit this place up again, and since it’s a Candian-ish pub, I won’t feel awkward showing up in flannel and a beard, oh wait, I AM a beard! Right. So yes, I love the Beaver.

We came here on a whim because they were advertising a groupon deal. The wheat/apricot beer is some of the best I’ve ever had! The grilled cheese is pretty much perfect. You can get it with your choice of multiple cheeses, meats, and other fancy stuff. It’s super crispy and delicious. Really enjoyed the atmosphere, too.

Again, a groupon was my reason for going! When you are in a new city with no one to give you tips, a deal can be a driving force. We wanted to try some«Canadian» food, which i know sounds kind of funny, but that’s what this place advertised so it was another good reason to try it. It is very small, but it wasn’t packed, so it was fine. I guess that they would play sports games on their tvs, so during game nights it might get loud. we ordered a «canadian meat» sandwich, which i’m pretty sure was just pastrami on rye, but it was really good and there was lots of moist warm meat. it came with a side of cole slaw that was spicy and good. we also ordered one of their specialties — mac and cheese. this was definitely not ‘kraft dinner’ as they say in canada. this was homemade hot melty goodness. you pick 2 different items to add into it– we chose bacon and pesto. it all went really well all baked together. super decadent ! i forget what we ordered at first, but they were out of it. and then our waitress mentioned quite a few menu items that they ran out of, so if you have something specific in mind you may not want to show up near closing like us. though it was only 9:30, and they had ‘last call’ at 10– so i guess this place closes earlier than most bars. our waitress was super nice, friendly, and helpful. and, the prices were decent. it is a touristy area — so prices are probably higher. the bill was about $ 30, of which we paid nothing, because our $ 15 groupon covered it. a deal does make food taste better, but this bar food was pretty tasty, deal or no deal.

I have to give an update on this because the food was so bad last time. It clearly has changed. The mac ‘n cheese was dry and lifeless, soup was mostly water, and the chicken wrap was crap. Still one of the better places to get a beer on the corner, but I would not advise the food.

Okay, so it’s not a lesbian bar(robin misconception #1) It’s also not a tribute to Canadiana(robin misconception #2) There are also no rogue taxidermied beavers on the wall(robin misconception #3) And finally, I have not seen ONE mullet in the entire space(see: robin misconception #1) It’s fine here. Nice view of the water, okay beer list, decent comfort food menu done fairly well… you know, just fine. Slightly awkward and not very cozy and really doesn’t live up to it’s name, but you know… it does what it does. It’s just not how I do. Stick a few beavers in mullets around the place, and it could be pretty rad vibe. You know, if you’re into that kind of thing. The beavers. And mullets. ahem.

Came here specifically to try the touted grilled cheese sandwiches, but we came at the wrong time :(I guess they only serve the grilled cheese sandwiches during lunch time, but we came for brunch. Although we didn’t get to try the grilled cheese, we still had an awesome brunch here. Me and my friend both ordered the poutine, which was yummy. It came with diced potatoes, mozzarella cheese, hollandaise sauce and I added sausage to mine. It had other ingredients but I can’t seem to remember what they are. This teaches me to review a restaurant as soon as possible, like right after eating or better yet while eating! The drink special of the day was a caesar motts clamato. I’m definitely not a fan of caesars and especially not a fan of clamato juice. Who the F decided all of a sudden that juice of tomato would go well with juice of clam?!? Bleh! Suffice to say, even though it was cheap(as in inexpensive), its cheapness didn’t make me like caesars any more. Luckily I was with a friend who loves them, so she obligingly finished mine off for me. Now I have an excuse to come back after 1pm, to try the grilled cheese sandwiches :) St3Fin

I walked past here many times, and on each occasion was upset that it was the middle of the day instead of dranky-time. The specials board out front and the well-named establishment seemed like something that would be fun to try. One night, I decided that the Beav n Mull be our place to visit. We were welcomed, but into a fairly brightly lit room with no real choice décor to speak of or to remember for review. For some reason, from the outside, I expected it to be darker and cosier in here, and also expected it to be open later on a weekend as our last call came prior to midnight. Some other loud patrons seemed to be regulars, and we disregarded them. The beer selection is fair. Not an extensive selection, but it was better than most restaurants. I had a seasonal Chestnut Ale from Whistler Brewing and loved it. The food is standard, but offers a somewhat unique selection of «Canadian comfort food». Nothing too fancy. All in all, I was somewhat underwhelmed. There’s nothing special enough to make me want to hurry back.

The mac and cheese, oh god, the mac and cheese. I ordered it with chicken, swiss and tomatoes, and it was incredible. The others at my table were jealous, although their Veggie burgers looked really delicious too. The atmosphere was good, our waitress was attentive, and they had a great selection of local brews. Will definitely be going back more often.

Great food. Highly recommend the Grilled Cheese with smoked gouda, pesto, and and smoked salmon. That’s right. Staff is super friendly. Only downside is they have horrible music playing 90% of the time. The remaining 10% is when a staff member brings in their own iPod.

My wife and I were just in Vancouver on vacation, and stopped into this place for dinner(after seeing the good Unilocal reviews). We had an excellent time there. We started with the poutine potato wedges, which were quite tasty. I had the mac & cheese and very much liked it. My wife wife enjoyed her veggie pizza too. They had a bunch of tasty local beers on tap as well. But more than the food, the people in the bar were amazing. The bartenders were super friendly and willing to chat. We talked to some regulars who were also astoundingly friendly. Definitely check this place out.

My second review: I do hope for later hours soon… This place is the best. You’ll get your snack on when you go here. You’ve got your Canadian staples: poutine, mac and cheese, Montréal smoked meat sandwiches… great soups, sliders, I could go on and on. I think my favourite thing is a good, fresh delicious sandwich paired with soup and a fresh cold Canadian 20 oz pint of beer(good beer specials too! $ 4 a pint!). Oh, and I forgot they have amazing brunches too! Nom nom nom! This is on top of the best service around… Rob(manager or owner) and the crew are fantastic. I’ve never had a bad experience here, and it’s always consistent.

My go-to neighbourhood joint. Tasty eats at reasonable prices, cold local beers, and friendly service. Couldn’t ask for anything more! We usually get some form of the grilled cheese sandwich, with so many add-ins the options are endless. And those pita chips! Crunchy salty little buggers, too good! Stop by, you won’t be disappointed :)

It’s not every day you get to check into The Beaver and Mullet Bistro*. Oh the jokes in my head Right. Now. But let’s keep it clean. It was a very Canadian sports bar with maple leaves and Canucks stuff a-plenty so I definitely knew I was in Canada. Yeah, no mistaking that. It’s a blokey bar, perfect for watching the games.(Oops, I nearly typed ‘matches’, where the hell do I think I am?). I thought it would be perfect place to order a big plate of wedges too, greasy and lavish, yeah? Hmm. But no, they arrived very nicely arranged and only about 6. Nouvelle cuisine meets The Beaver! We also ordered a grilled cheese, and the friendly server told us his favourite was chicken and bacon, with a side of mushroom soup. It was good with a crispy coating, did they deep fry it somehow? Probably not the place for a girly catch-up, but friendly and fun. Three stars for The Beaver, no stars for the Mullet, cos who likes a mullet? *Bistro, really? Aren’t we all fancy now?

I’d like to come back here another time as I feel like I hit B&M on an off night. We waited for what felt like a long time before being greeted or offered menu’s. Perhaps because there is only one guy on the floor and another behind the bar. A greeting would have been nice though. We ordered potato wedges: minimally topped and plain. I think I was expecting something more cheesy like potato skins so I was disappointed – my bad though. The grilled cheese sandwich was great. With a variety of ingredients to choose from we were able to order a custom sandwich: chicken, roasted pepper and cheddar on whole-grain bread. It hit the spot with it’s crispy outer layer. Yeah baby. The restaurant itself is small-ish and plain. I don’t remember there being very much to the décor, but the picturesque sight of English Bay may have distracted me. A good thing. When you go: nab a table by the window and enjoy the ocean view.

Show from the street and inside décor are austere — Service outstanding! Salt and pepper wings not bad. Salad fresh and well tossed with a good vinaigrette. Four plates based on mac and cheese were delicious. Would have stayed for another beer but aged ears couldn’t compete with the TV’s.

Atmosphere: It was a cozy little restaurant/slash pub? Nothing fancy, however, nothing ghetto either. Small and cozy. Service: I called in advance thinking that I needed a reservation and the lady on the phone was pleasant and sweet. The same service continued when we arrived. Our waiter was fun, charming, sociable and helpful in answering my inquiries as a foodie. Food: I bought the Social Shopper coupon with the intention of coming for lunch, however, based on a suggestion, came for breakfast instead. I had the Frittatas. I’ve never had Frittatas before, however, they’re basically mini open faced omelets with cheese and veggies. Very fluffy and light. I really liked these. ’cause I have never had Frittatas before I can’t compare to any other restaurant, however, it was a good light bite. It came with salad and a few slices of melon. It wasn’t a large breakfast for $ 10 and I was left a little hungry, however, it was a good portion for someone who is on an eating plan. I also shared some home made waffles with my date which came with real maple syrup. You only get 1 waffle for $ 6 which was a bit on the expensive side, however, a good dessert none the less. Price: The price for the portions was a little $$$, however, I had a social shopper coupon so it was reasonable with a reasonable over top to compensate. For $ 10 don’t go hungry, however, as a little social bit for breakfast it’s awesome.

My hood the West end has been a wasteland of clean, friendly pubs with good food. So I was excited to see the beaver open up. Tonight I dropped in with a friend for a quick bite and a drink wanting to finally test drive the place. I was busy and not just because there was a game on. The crowd like the west end was diverse and low key. They have a small but for me interesting menu. I do prefer some places to have a limited menu instead of a phone book We chose the Potato skins which come with an amazing mix of bacon and a little maple syrup reduction, Oh My they were really really good, what other potato skins would hope to be someday. I had the«Grilled Cheese» which is a make your own kinda of event, you choose from 3 things you can stuff into it. I chose, Camembet, gryure and pulled pork marinated in guiness. They even bake cheese on top of the great artisan bread they use, Praise Cheesus, and it was gooey and crunchy, savory. For be heaven and health as I have a wee lactose problem but will suffer for my art. The sandwich came with soup, or roasted pita chips or ick salad. I chose the mushroom soup which was ok. Service, well we sat at the bar and even though the bartender was busy he was very chatty and asking for menu advice from us customers which is a nice touch. Jaggers from from the tap were 4 bucks. Mix this with a ok but limited local beer draft selection and it makes a great pub. Over all my visist to The beaver & mullet was a great experience and a huge welcome to the hood. Next time I will try that mac and cheese you make your own way. Or the pay what you think special. It seems like the west end has a great place for good Canadian comfort food at good prices and nice staff. A keeper, so get out and give it a try. PS they also do Montréal Smoked Meat Sandwiches

I was reluctant to try The Beaver and Mullet. Yes it was the name, and the«Canadian Bistro» title — what is Canadian food anyhow? Ah yes… mac and cheese cooked to your liking, baked wings, Montréal smoked meat sandwiches, Caesar salads. A good selection of beer and wine(and surprisingly inexpensive drink prices!), a few big TVs for watching whatever game is on, and a very friendly vibe. General Manager Noël had to explain the daily«Pay-What-You-Like Special» — which is exactly what it sounds like, to my amazement. I get it now. Good comfort food, cheap drinks and a happy, laid back vibe. If Beaver and Mullet were any more Canadian it would apologize for itself.
