the good. there aren’t a lot of dessert places in town. and this may be the only one in gastown. the mediocre. the desserts are heavy and lacking. think back to death by chocolate. very similar quality. they are definitely very similar and not elegant/refined desserts. they are perfectly run of the mill. the bad. very off-putting ambience. the front looks great. then you walk past that area and it seems to be almost richmond like dessert place and unromantic. it’s really surprising i’m always game to go for dessert. but i’m not sure i would come back here.

I don’t really understand all the high ratings. In terms of presentation, it is definitely 5⁄5. Everything is very beautifully presented in the dim lighting. However, food wise… that’s another story.(Please note I have only tried 3 things on the menu). Everything just lacked depth!!! With so many different colors and textures on your plate, you would expect very interesting flavor combinations and pairings, but it is not. the whole ensemble was blend and unfaltering. There are many other restaurants and dessert bars in Vancouver that offer much better desserts with half the price. Please go if you like pretty, instagramable plates. Please save you money if you actually want to have decent desserts.

I finally found a new date night spot for after I demolish the free chocolate candy jar from the restaurant and the half kit kat bar that was left in the car since Halloween(jk). It’s called Mosquito and it’s located in the beautiful Gastown. My favourite part of the city. Especially at night. I don’t love it enough to live here, but I love it for when I need Gastown nights. Kind of like my relationship with desserts. Mosquito opens daily at nighttime and closes late which reminds me a lot like Asia. Very exotic and trendy inside; lit up neon bar, casual service and an intimate crowd. A different vibe than your normal casual Gastown bar. I love it! Inside you order desserts and cocktails. They are known for their champagne bar. I ordered the Peanut butter & milk chocolate bar caramel popcorn, caramelized banana jam and popcorn gelato($ 12). Really liked it. Also had some side chocolates, wasn’t a huge fan. I just don’t like chocolate filled with anything. I was that kid that eats those boxes of chocolate, take a bite out of each to find the one with almonds or cashews. And leave it there for someone to find it and yell at me. Because my family would all know it’s me. I can’t even deny it. Full review and photos on my blog.

Love this place. Eli our server was very attentive and knowledgable about the menu. I had a Mascato Asti which paired perfectly with the pumpkin mousse dessert I ordered. We shared the afogato and peanut butter bar desserts. All simply delish. Love the ambiance, and décor. It’s minimal but modern. It’s a great date night dessert place, I reccomend it to everyone.

Overall: Pretty swanky modern kind of place. Only serves desserts and drinks. Great place to bring a date. The concept of deconstructed desserts is cool. I do feel everything is overpriced and if you honestly want good dessert you don’t just have to come here for that. There are plenty of other places which are open later too like Thierry. Also if you go to a good restaurant you can get decent dessert as well without having to play double the prices and actually be full. Food: Caramel coffee frozen parfait $ 12: I believe one of the best of the 4 desserts we tried. If you love the taste of coffee then must get this one. Ricotta cheese cake $ 12: smooth and like your regular good cheesecake Peanut butter and milk chocolate bar $ 12 couldn’t really tell it was popcorn gelato. Pecan Gianduja $ 12 it was alright couldn’t really taste the pear and the sponge cake was only ok. Kind of tasteless. Service: Good service but needed to wait a bit as they were super busy. They were professional to not rush us out even after it was passed their closing hours and we were the only ones left Ambience: Trendy and modern Parking: Street parking. Limited as its in a busy area so you might need to buffer time to look for a spot or to walk from a further one.

I’ve heard about this place for a while now and since my friend and I were already downtown and both craving dessert and drinks… what better place to go than a champagne and dessert bar? The inside is a lot smaller than we guessed and we actually walked past it a couple of times before we finally found it. Since it was a Thursday evening, it wasn’t too busy so we were seating right away. I don’t really remember much about their cocktail list to be honest(I have the worst memory…) but I went with the Mosquito Bite, which must be pretty new because I can’t find any reviews about it or even find it on the menu online. The thing that caught my eye though is the fact that it was made with a chili-infused vodka. Personally, I love spicy things so I knew I had to try it. The drink was interesting, when you first taste it, it’s actually pretty sweet and tastes like champagne, and then after the spiciness hits you. Like CRAZY. It’s the kind of spicy that just burns your mouth(no burn on the lips or throat) and then suddenly, the spice is gone. I wasn’t a huge fan just because all the other flavours were overwhelmed by the spicyness so I don’t really feel like that’s enjoyable for a cocktail. My friend and I ordered the parmesan and truffle popcorn which I loved! The popcorn was fresh and the truffle flavour wasn’t so strong as to cover everything else, combined with lots of freshly grated parmesan — thumbs up! We also shared a petit four plate which comes with a macaron, a chocolate and 4 bite-sized items from their menu. If you ask, you can select your macaron and chocolate flavour. Overall, pretty enjoyable experience! Dark but not TOO dark like some other places. Spot on music that isn’t too loud so you can’t hear what your friends are saying. Will definitely be back!

Love this place just to run to and have a nice dimming night with the girls or even significant other. We basically ordered almost everything from chocolate to dessert to cheese plate, pâté and macarons! Must try. It’s a bit hidden so we had difficulty finding but worth the hunt!

I brought my friend here tonight to celebrate her early birthday. Found this little dessert and champagne bar hidden in the gem of gas town. I’m really glad we decided to try this place out. It took me a few drives around the block to locate where this bar is located but eventually google map came to the rescue. This bar is quite small so if you are looking for a larger group location I suggest you to find somewhere else. This is best for 2 – 4 people seating I think. The atmosphere is wonderful inside. Friendly staffs and cozy settings. We shared the dark chocolate cremeux and caramel coffee frozen parfait. They were both super delicious. Very delicate dessert as you can tell the chef put in a lot of effort to plate their desserts. I really like the caramel coffee frozen parfait the best because it had a really great flavour of espresso infused in the crème. It is also accompanied with espresso meringues which was my favourite part. The dark chocolate cremeux is good too but the caramel coffee stood out more to me. We also ordered their moscato to go with our desserts and it was the perfect match. Batasiolo moscato d’Asti 2013. Super yummy dessert wine!

Once again, I finished my Gastown dining experience with dessert and wine at mosquito. I’ve had almost every dessert on the menu now, and they have all been good. They were a little busy tonight, so we waited longer than normal, but we were not in a rush, so that was fine. However, without any complaints, they gave us complimentary Pettit fours to apologize for the delay, that I was grateful of anyway. Not only do the execute desserts well, they also excel in customer service!

Very accommodating and friendly. High quality dessert and campaigns. Cool and contemporary ambiance. Witty touch in their washroom décor. French inspired. Good place for a date or girl’s night out. The chocolate cremux is amazing!!!

IF I EVER go on a date again, and the dude takes me here, automatically he gets a gold star! WOW. The ambiance is very dark and sexy. Normally for a first date, if a guy took me to a place as such, I’d most likely write him off. «Nope, dude. You are so not getting in my pants on the first date. What kind of lady do you take me for?» But my oh my, don’t let Misquito’s first impression fool you… Misquito has taken dessert to another level! Their desserts are an artwork and the kitchen should be proud. Plus the balance of flavours was perfection. We started with the truffle oil & parmesan popcorn. I’m a huge truffle and parmesan fan. So that was an automatic yes to our server’s suggestion. Thank goodness, despite arriving on a full stomach I said yes. If I could lick the martini glass it was in, I would. Next was dessert. We settled to share 2, dark chocolate cremeux and caramel coffee frozen parfait. Both were gorgeous to look at and also gorgeous to eat, but what I loved most about them is both were a perfect balance of sweet. This is exactly how I like all my desserts. Also, I can appreciate the thought of how the chef thought about each bite’s experience in texture, flavour and taste. It was ORGASMIC and this is the first time I’m really not lying! ;P I’m not done yet. I also ordered a maple caramel and vanilla macaron. I have had many macarons in my lifetime and Misquito’s macaron selection is very unique. I will definitely be trying more in the future! The presentation of my macaron was adorable. Tiny flowers and a crunch crumble surrounded it on the plate. I was too full to eat this and took it home for the next day. I am so glad I did order this! Best macaron ever! Service was impeccable. We even were in there a bit after closing and not once were we rushed and our server never made us feel unwelcome. I feel very strongly about my 5-star rating for Misquito. So strongly that I had to write a review after taking an over-a-year hiatus from review writing. Plus, this is the FIRSTVANCOUVERREVIEW I have written since moving here almost 6 months ago! This is as good as it gets baby!

Love this place! I love it because it’s a unique experience! It’s very small and dark with candle light. I found it cozy but very tight. Don’t expect to walk in after dinner and choose a seat. They are busy. The dessert is phenomenal! It’s deconstructed and lovely! It is a different dessert experience. This is not your ordinary dessert joint. The dessert here is like a small piece of art work with tantalizing flavors. It doesn’t come out at all like you expect. It’s gorgeous! I ordered the buttermilk Panna cotta with oatmeal and lemon curd. Fantastic! I can’t wait to go back and try something else. You should note dessert is on the small side and pricier than most. You’re looking at 10 – 12 bucks per dessert. Great date place! Enjoy!

Mosquito, a chic addition of a romantic dessert place to Gastown is alluring for sure. Its got a dark and sexy vibe and a sweet-centric theme that’s welcoming to all. We walked in before our dinner for the Dessert Tapas special that runs from 5−8pm where you can either get a course for $ 6 or three for $ 15. We couldn’t stop gawking at the beautiful interior that reminiscent Art Deco and whispers softly of Mad Men. It is definitely a dainty lounge with only about 40 seats but we walked in early and had the best seat in the house — in the front corner out looking the street. The following three tapas were quite impressive in terms of the thoughtfulness of the ingredients juxtaposed to each other’s unique flavour, the quality of the ingredients as well as the creative plating. Frozen Coconut Snowball came in a small cast iron pan donned with toasted coconut flakes, roasted passio fruit pineapple and tips of Shiso leafs. The snowball is very creamy on the taste and textured like a condense sorbet. Caramelized Banana was sorted with sugar on top with vanilla ice cream, crunchy sesame flake, lemon curd, coconut moose, and balsamic vinegar reduction. Without the balance of the vinegar, this dish could have been too rich. The Hot Chocolate was very thick and flavourful. It came in a tiny espresso cup, topped with whip cream and sprinkles of cocoa nibs, with chocolate cookie on the side. I felt like this experience was a steal and I look forward to coming back with my girlfriends, perhaps another dessert avant dinner? Cheerio!

Desserts & Cocktails: 4 Service: 3 Ambiance: 4 During our search for a dinner destination, we stumbled across Mosquito — a new dessert place recently opened in Gastown. I got the impression this was a dinner service, however after checking out the menu, we realized it was dessert only and made a note to come back after dinner. Desserts: We tried the Pecan gianduja(cassis foam, dehydrated pecan sponge, pear gel and pear sorbet — $ 12) and two of the macarons(coconut and lavender and oolong tea and chocolate $ 2 ea). Everything was delicious with beautiful modern plating. However, pecan gianduja was slightly overpriced for the portion size. Cocktails: I can’t remember the names of the cocktails we tried, but I had the one with the Hennessy and bitters, while my boyfriend tried the cocktail served hot with a teapot. Very interesting and delicious. Service: We sat at the bar — there was only one bartender working and she seemed a bit frazzled(the place was full.) She was friendly, however the service became slow because she was not only responsible for making the drinks but also serving the drinks(to not only the tables and the bar.) They should consider taking some of the service responsibilities from her and let her focus on the bar only. Ambiance: It’s nicely decorated with modern flare — the single shared bathroom was especially interesting(and slightly confusing) with its sink faucet hanging above the sink and an introduction to learning French playing over the speakers(entertaining!) I enjoyed the trip-hop playing in the space that night, the volume wasn’t too loud to carry a conversation. Overall, a very nice space with interesting menu items — a bit pricey for what you get, but a good spot to impress a date ;)

Mosquito Gastown is a new dessert and champagne Lounge in Vancouver. Mosquito is an upscale, sexy restaurant dedicated to desserts, cocktails and charcuterie. Mosquito is located where the old Oak + Fort location is just outside of Blood Alley. We think owners Alice Wu and Johan Friedrich has a really great concept to offering dessert outside of chocolate lava cake. Mosquito is a perfect date night spot with its dark and sophisticated atmosphere designed by Ste. Marie Art + Design(see Homer St. Café, Meat & Bread, Ask for Luigi, Revolver). Dessert Tapas are available between 5pm to 8pm for $ 6 each or 3 for $ 15. Tasty desserts are made by pastry chef Julianne Hansen who previously worked at Cadeaux Bakery. Olive oil and Lemon Madeleine: Freshly baked to order. These baby Madeleines are the definition of warm and fuzzy. Sponge is ever so subtly sweet with a moist center and dusted with confectioners sugar. After Happy Hour, the Lemon Madeleine is served with olive oil bavarois, sponge, elderflower syrup, and dehydrated grapefruit. Pistachio Ice Cream: Pistachio genoa sponge, caramelized puff pastry, white chocolate and lemon yoghurt mousseline with pomegranate pearls. Earthy, nutty fragrance balanced with bright acidic citrus caviar. Genoise cake is a very light and delicate. Frozen Coconut Snowball: Coconut ice cream with slow roasted passion fruit and shiso. Reminds me of Raffaello chocolate. Macarons: New to the menu since Wednesday and are simply divine. On the table are Coconut and Lavender and Oolong tea and milk chocolate. We highly recommend the Coconut and Lavender macaron. Subtly distinctive flavors you can taste. At first bite, it is hard to taste the lavender. After a few seconds, you will start to notice the fragrance and the lavender aroma starts to seep in. Mosquito Macaron Flavors Available Valrhona dark chocolate Coconut and lavender Red fruits and tonka bean Maple caramel and vanilla Olive oil and rosemary Oolong tea and milk chocolate Roses and lychee We will be back again to Mosquito as I am sure their menus changes seasonally. This sexy lounge is romantic. It is a great date spot to charm your lady. I’m always game for dessert first!

How did I know this place? My friends went there on their grand opening and told me that good place for dessert and drinks! Sure! It will be my priority to check it out! It’s funny restaurant named Mosquito! Hmm. Get a bite??? Anyway, it’s a small and dark restaurant. It opens at 5pm-12am on Wed to Sun only. We were there on Sat night around 9.30 pm. They were getting busy and 2⁄3 tables were occupied. We got seated right the way and followed the hostess to our table, it’s so dark inside. The menu was on the table but we barely could see the items on the menu! Of coz, another solution of seeing the menu item — go on their office website or Unilocal! I would say this is pricey and trendy dessert place, $ 10-$ 12 a dessert worth or not!!! Depends… I ordered Pecan Gianduja — cassis foam, dehydrated pecan, sponge, pear gel and pear sorbet. It presented beautifully. Gianduja wasn’t too sweet but so smooth, pear gel and sorbet were perfectly matched. It’s spectacular! I almost wanted to refuse for sharing. My friend had Dark chocolate cremeux — caramelia espuma, cocoa streusel, caramelia pearls, maple syrup. It’s great but not our flavour. Besides, dark and loud background music! We enjoyed the desserts and we will return to try other dessert next time.

Saw this place on the way to dinner. The message«dessert first» on the door wasnt enough to convince my bf so at dinner we agreed to share a dessert at our restaurant and then at Mosquito. At Mosquito the dessert menu was so tempting that we ended up each with our own. — Pecan gianduja cassis foam, dehydrated pecan sponge, pear gel and pear sorbet — Matcha green tea opera yuzu cremeux, coconut matcha mousse, candied citrus zest, coconut and pandan leaf sorbet Both were amazing! Beautifully plated and delicious. I personally loved Pecan gianduja because it was both chocolatety and fruity. I love the touches of tartness to balance the whole dessert. My bf loved his more which is great, no sharing: D We ended with a few chocolates. I recommend the Birch Syrup. Lovely smooth flavor with a bit of crunch. In addition great friendly service. A+++++ Highly recommend this place. Worth skipping dessert and ending the night here.
