India Gate restaurant is a local family owned and operated restaurant that serves delicious and authentic North Indian cuisine. Our lunch and dinner menus offer a variety of different options, from vegetarian options to meat dishes, rice specialties to curried sea food, we have something for everyone! To start off your meal, try our buttery garlic naan or our crispy vegetable or meat samosas. House specialties include butter chicken (boneless chicken marinated and cooked with fresh tomatoes and cream) and our vegetarian Thali dinner (platter with globi alu, matter panner, dal, raita, pillau rice, naan or roti, papadum, fresh salad, mint chutney and one gulabjaman).

Established in 1977.

India Gate Restaurant first opened its doors in 1977. We were the first Indian restaurant in the area and continue to this day to remain one of the best restaurants around. For over 38 years, we have consistently served warm and delicious North Indian cuisine to locals and visitors from our location in downtown Vancouver.

Gurmeet G.

Manager

Gurmeet is the manager at India Gate and handles the day-​to-​day operations of the restaurant. His parents are the owners of the restaurant and since he was little, Gurmeet has always stepped up to help his parents out whenever he can.

I’m writing this review after trying the restaurant for 5 times. Every time my experience has been great. The food tastes like home and the hosts are caring. Paneer makhni (spicy) and the vegetarian thali are my personal favorites. The free papad with yummy mango chutney is good.

Delicious Lamb Korma! My husband and I loved it. And the service was great. Right from the get-​go they asked me if we’d like to sit in the window which I did cause we love people watching. It’s a family business that has great food.

For my money this is the best Indian restive tried in vancouver.
The food is great, very authentic. Not like the usual fare of most Indian restaurants I’ve found since moving to vancouver. The price is great, especially the lunch menu whenever it’s on (lunch time I suppose…).
Despite not looking like the most appealing place from the outside it is bloody fabulous. I just wish they delivered.

My bestie Peter and I came here before the Ringo Starr show to share a few healthy dishes. We had the tandoori chicken with rice and lentil soup.
Prices are a bit $$$ for what it is.
The area is clean and somewhat trendy-​ish.
Customer service was okay, however, it did make me feel uncomfortable when the waitress hovered over me when they gave us the cheque. She didn’t even give us a minute to look over it.
The service was extremely slow and it wasn’t that busy.

The dingy looking outside really does not reflect the gem inside. They have a modern décor, delicious food, and the price is on par with most Indian places, which is surprising considering it is in a busy Downtown location.
1. Flavor: very delicious and creamy, you can order 2x hot, and trust me, I go out of my way to take more hot ramen or bobby wing challenges, and this 2x hot level is not for the faint hearted
2. Chicken: it was tender, not dry and overcooked, portion size is fairly decent to the average Indian restaurant
The meal comes with rice, but you can request to have garlic naan instead. Also, they also give you pacor with salsa dip. I personally thought the pacor had an overwhelming amount of spice, and it made my throat a little itchy, but my partner enjoyed it immensely.

Small portion and over priced. Food tasted good but not authentic.
Customer service can improve. We waited long time before they finally took our order and by the end the owner almost looked like throwing the receipt in front of us. Not a pleasant way to serve customer. Will not return again.

After living in the area for over a year, we have walked past this restaurant every-​day after-​work but had never been enticed to visit. Finally, after seeing a coupon from the Entertainment Book for a 2 for 1 dinner, we decided we would try India Gate.
Upon arrival on a Monday night, we we’re greeted promptly and our server was very pleasant. The menu was very user-​friendly for those with gluten or dairy allergies, and everything was easily identifiable. The server also offered some great recommendations (or popular choices), which included the Chicken Tikka and Butter Chicken. Additionally, the Naan (garlic and regular), we’re a great addition!
We were so surprised to see our food when it arrived as the portions we’re huge, and extremely delicious and fresh. The spice level could also be adjusted on a three-​tier scale, which makes eating India Food a lot more pleasant.
The server also recommended we join for their $ 10 lunch specials (M-​F), and welcomed us back. We had such a great (and surprising) experience, and will definitely consider this a neighborhood, family-​owned gem.

My boyfriend and I stopped here for dinner while we were wandering around downtown. What a nice little gem hidden away in the entertainment district.
We walked in and the place was beautiful. The servers were super nice. My boyfriend ordered the chicken korma and loved it. I ordered an Indian salad and Daal soup. Oh man it was so good!
The prices are pretty decent, the whole meal cost us $ 30 I think. The food was great with portion sizes, service was great, overall I really enjoyed the place!

This place used to be one of my preferred places in Vancouver. However, my last experience was not good. I’ve got dirty glasses, and before that I had dirty spoon. When my boyfriend tried to ask a waiter about the menu, he was interrupted several times, while he tried to explain his question.
The food is delicious, but chicken had lots of fat, and naan bread was too greasy.

We chose this place because we were desperate for Indian but after a long day of walking around Vancouver didn’t want to venture to far from the hotel. Not the best reason I understand. We had walked by this place earlier and it looked nice so we decided to give it a try. Overall the restaurant was a little tired looking up close, the staff was strange and the food was just ok. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and my husband ordered the lamb curry. By no means was the food bad, but I’ve definitely had better. Not sure I would recommend to anyone… sorry!

I can only go by my experience with a staff person in a white car who always parks in the middle of the alley beside the restaurant blocking traffic while unloading items into the restaurant, taking his sweet time, even though he doesn’t have a commercial vehicle permit. When people (usually commercial vehicles with a permit) ask him to move so they can get by he gets angry and confrontational or tells them to go around even though the other end is a ‘do not enter’. I work in the area driving a commercial vehicle and have dealt with this first-​hand myself. I will not eat here for that reason. Not a very considerate staff person that should park on the street or at least to the side of the alley to let vehicles get past.

I visited this place because I wanted my sister to try Indian food which she has not tried before. After hearing good things about this place, we gave it a try;
–Food was okay. Nothing really stood out but everything was mediocre.
–If you dont like greasy food, don’t even bother to order their breads. We tried their garlic naan and roti and they were both greasy (especially roti).So, we took a small bite from each of the breads and left the rest on the table.
–The service was good.
I probably would not go back to this place!

One of my favorite Indian restaurants in Vancouver. Their lamb vindaloo with rice was mouth watering, tasty, and had a nice kick to it.
I’m surprised they weren’t that pricey in comparison to some of the finest restaurants in NYC.

Came to try this place because we had an entertainment book coupon, and my boyfriend loves Indian food. I’m a downtown local by the way.
–Ordered chicken tikka masala & spinach chicken
–Curries were okay… just okay. Lacking balance and complexity in flavors, slightly bland, and greasy. We asked for hot, and the spice was undetectable. We love spicy food so this was really disappointing.
–Rice is awful! They don’t use basmati, it’s regular long grain and too soft because it is overcooked!
–Naan is awful! Unusually thick and doughy, and covered in SO much grease there was a puddle at the bottom that it was sitting in!
Overall I think this restaurant, like many restaurants along Robson St., have blanded down their cooking to suit the majority tourist population they serve. Unfortunately we won’t be back, the service was good however the food just sat uncomfortably in our stomachs after and we felt unsatisfied. Anyone who has had GOOD authentic Indian food would agree!

While wandering around Vancouver, I came across India Gate, and my taste buds IMMEDIATELY began salivating. I went inside, sat down, got a nice cold Singha, and perused the menu… well, that’s not true. I knew I wanted chicken tikka masala, and merely wanted to see what kind of naan they had… and YES… garlic naan in on the menu! Placing my order, I asked very politely to make it spicier than what they would consider spicy… and pointed out there’s no such thing as too much garlic on the garlic naan.
A while later, I got my order. and, to be fair, one out of two ain’t all that bad. FANTASTIC naan, severely loaded with garlic (YES!). And moderately spicy (and that’s being kind) tikka masala. The waiter asked if it was spicy enough, and I said no, but great naan. He disappeared, and the cook actually came out (probably to see if the rumor was true… that a blonde haired blue-​eyed person was eating tikka masala, and wanted it hotter… yeah, we’re a rare breed, I admit. But it IS how we roll).
Bottom line, very very good masala, and the naan was most excellent. I’ll be hitting this place up again…

WTF?! I’m offended and appalled! I live nearby, so I gave it 3 chances before I flipped out.
– The chicken they use is dark and greasy!
– There’s a puddle of OIL in every dish — not sure why, maybe to disguise the garbage they are serving.
– Every dish is double the price it should be…
So yes, in a nutshell, they serve you crap, and rape you in the process. No Thanks. Try Salam Bombay down the street — twice the quality, half the price. Or Indian Tabla Bistro on Granville, both of which while exceed in quality and flavor.
