History

Established in 2012.

Several years ago I fell in love with cupcakes. I loved the endless possibilities of flavours and decorations! Cupcakes became my newest creative outlet. I started taking cake decorating classes and experimenting with recipes and was soon baking way more cupcakes than I could eat. My friends and family didn’t mind that at all and kept encouraging me to open my own shop. At the time, I worked at a job that I hated where they treated people like servants and paid them next to nothing. I was also frustrated by the lack of availability for good quality foods that met my dietary restrictions. With the aid, support, and patience from a lot of wonderful people in my life (and a little bit of work) Fairy Cakes was born.

When I asked about their cupcakes, the woman behind the counter told me the gluten-free cupcakes were all gone and only the gluten-full cupcakes left. So I bought two gluten-full cupcakes to try (pear icing with choco. cupcake base and coffee icing with vanilla cupcake base). The icing is too sweet with artificial coloring; I can’t taste the flavours. The cupcake bases taste okay. For the lemon cream cheese coffee cake, the lemon flavour is in the cake and not in the cream cheese; the cream cheese is just a thin slice in the cake with light taste.
Their cupcakes and their cake slices do not worth the price — the cupcakes taste fake, the cake slices taste ordinary. The quality of their cupcakes is similar as the ones at supermarket and less than the ones at Cupcakes, which are full with sugar and coloring. Their gluten-full baked goods made me not interested to try their gluten-free baked goods, especially there is a gluten-free bakery down the road, The Gluten-Free Epicurean, which is better in terms of food and service with similar price.

Had a strawberry cheesecake from here today after my sushi lunch. It was delicious! Their cupcakes look good too. I’ll have to try one next time. Glad this place is in my neighbourhood!

I am always looking for excuses to make it to this neighbourhood. The ‘fairy buns’ have to be my favourite treat ever. and this shop doesn’t hold back on ingredients. topped with oodles of delicious vegan cream cheesy icing and stuffed with different seasonal fruit or chocolate or whatever… I love em! It’s really helpful to have a place where you can order a batch of treats for an office event or bday party and EVERYONE can eat them. that’s pretty handy. They do great custom work too, makes it easy to make a friend feel really special. Super friendly people. I highly recommend a visit to Fairy Cakes.

The gluten free vegan cheesecake, available the last weekend of the month, is amazing! I go back every month for it. The cupcakes and cookies are just ok. They have a café there now too, so it’s a bit more inviting to sit and stay, but I’ve only done take away.

time to review their cupcakes!!!
Fairy cupcakes come in two versions: containing wheat or gluten free. I have to say that the gluten free ones didn’t taste gluten free. Well done Fairy cakes. You can trick anyone with your cupcakes!
The cupcakes come in either a vanilla or chocolate cake base. Both very delicous, but the flavor didn’t vary much. It was a not too sweet, firm initial bite with a soft, cupcakey finish. The flavors were found in the deliciously light icing which varied greatly from mint chocolate, strawberry, lime, coffee, raspberry, and the list goes on. It’s delicous and you’d never know it was gluten free!
I put a couple in the fridge and the icing harden and so did the outside of the cupcake. I liked it… A lot.

I’m confused. Is this place some sort of money laundering operation? I walk by here all the time. It’s barely ever open and when it is there are no customers. Just the owner sitting at a laptop killing time.
The cupcakes are absolutely not fresh. I’ve seen them in the cooler overnight so they definitely aren‘t made fresh. They are also made in a kitchen that is not vegan so can’t guarantee the product does not come into contact with any animal products which defeats the purpose of a fucking vegan cupcake in the first place.
I tried a mint chocolate chip cupcake. It cost me $ 4. For $ 4 I could have bought a sixpack of those horrendous safeway cupcakes that are iced with Vaseline. It would easily be just as enjoyable as that overpriced little stump of «vegan» shit cake that I shoved in my mouth. Whoever thought those things were a good idea needs to have their face fucked with an icecream cone.

It was the most miserable day outside, the clear start of the fall/winter. It rained hard, traffic was finiky and the person in front of me driving didn’t know how to make a proper right turn. I had no choice and wait as honking would serve no purpose.
I turned my head and noticed a sandwich board for «Fairy Cakes.» My motto in life is that cupcakes always makes things better. Today was a day that I needed to feel better ’cause of the rain.
I went inside before meeting up for dinner. As I walked in I noticed the wonderful colorful display of cupcakes, must of which were gluten free = win win for me.
I had to chocolate gluten free cupcake with black berry frosting. Cupcake was right texture and the frosting was nice, flavorful and smooth. It is a nice cute small place.
The lady, owner was supper nice and chatty. It was nice to frankly shoot the shit with someone to allow me to forget about how awful it was outside.
I felt guilty about dragging my soggy self outside, however, she was really sweet and accommodating as I didn’t want to eat the cupcake in the rain only to get it soggy.
I have seen fairy cakes before at trade shows. It was nice to see someone go from small trade shows to opening a store front. I have been seeing this a lot lately which is awesome. Vancouver needs more DIY shops with unique flair for the city.

This is a nice simple shop with several different frosting options atop either chocolate or vanilla cupcakes. (I had coffee/chocolate.) I liked that the cupcakes were fresh and colorful. This is a great dessert stop after brunch at Graze, which is just a few blocks away.
Gluten-free cupcakes were available, but I didn’t try those.

I was looking for a quick snack on the run while running errands this afternoon and thought I would get a vegan cupcake at Fairy Cakes. Friends have brought Fairy Cakes to dinner parties & BBQs for dessert where I’ve had the chance to enjoy them, but this was my first time stepping inside the shop in person. I was craving the simplistic colourful frosting and wonderfully creative flavours of Fairy Cakes cupcakes. Unfortunately for me and fortunately for business, I guess, all the cup cakes were sold out before I got in at around 4:30.
Which was just as well. When everything is vegan, running out of something doesn’t mean I have to go hungry. They still had wide selection of cookies and cheese cakes to choose from. I had a daiya cheese mini pizza and ate it on their patio table before zipping along to the next errand. It wasn’t gooey fresh from the oven but it was flavourful and hit the savoury spot. As other reviews have already mentioned, ambiance is not the star of the show at Fairy Cakes. It’s set up like a bakery front in most ways, but also feels cluttered and vacant at the same time. But décor aside, this a damn tasty place for vegan, nut free, gluten free baking.

Have allergies and want a good cupcake or cookie? Go here and give ‘em a try. With the mix of allergies a person may have and personal taste, it is hard to review a place like this, but I’ll say it is worth a try. I personally prefer other gluten-free options, especially since the ambiance at Fairy Cakes ain’t great — I never feel great walking in or making a purchase. On the other hand, I really enjoy eating what I buy there.
There is something nice about someone doing what they love and not worrying about creating an atmosphere. It lets the product shine. I can appreciate that.
So if you’re looking for some baking to go, this place has its advantages — the product is solid, there is usually free street parking out front, and it is never busy. But don’t expect to sit around here. I noticed today that they added a table and two seats outside, which was a nice touch.

Great local cupcake shop, with options for those with dietary restrictions.
I had a chocolate cupcake with blueberry frosting, and it was fantastic! The blueberry frosting is certainly a different flavor than what I’m used to on a cupcake, but it definitely works.
At $ 3.75 per cupcake, it might be a little more than I’m used to paying, but considering it’s a small bakery, you know they are fresh and worth the money. Plus, they gluten-free options, as well as soy-free, dairy-free, and nut-free. I will go back when I visit Vancouver again!

Super cute little bakery! The location is a little out of the way for me, but I still bussed out, bought my baked goods, then promptly took a returning bus without any regrets.
There’s a little display case of donuts and muffins, and there’s a few different flavours of cookies and such as well. I had showed up a little later in the day, so there were two trays full of goodies for 50%, and if I had stayed a little longer the fresh treats would have been cooled and displayed, but I was satisfied with the selection they still had left.
Definitely recommend this bakery. Staff was friendly, good variety of food, and it was all super tasty!
