Doan’s Craft Brewing

Doan’s is still pretty new to the ever growing craft beer scene in East Van. The small and intimate tasting room is a delightful place to hang out and chat with friends and randoms (as you’ll cozy up with strangers). On my visit, just before closing, my friend and I bumped into a bunch of brewery crawlers visiting from the interior and ended up having an awesome night with them — it’s that kind of place., sociable!
The beer is still a little ways of from perfection, which is understandable. The range and quality will no doubt improve and expand with age. My only reservation about visiting regularly is the relatively small range of beers (usually just the three) and they don’t rotate that range very regularly.
With the likes of Off the Rail, Powell Street, Bomber, and Storm all near by, and all offering a much larger tasting range, you feel that expanding their product range is going to be vital.

I have been meaning to try this place for six months, but it’s about a block further than the closest place to my house, so.
So happy I dragged boyfriend here! Delicious beer!!! And not tooooo many choices — yes I will have one of everything, please. Plus, a couple snacks to stave off the hunger.
The decos are v west coast and hip. Love the growler collection — can you identify them all? ;) Lego night on Wednesday!!! Small tho, so it can get kinda awkward when sitting next to a first date. Or a fighting couple. Or pretty much anybody.

You might recognize East Vancouver’s newest craft brewery, Doan’s Craft Brewing Company, for its old, familiar location, Powell Street Craft Brewery’s former digs, in fact. The very intimate nano-​brewery has a lot of the same charm and offbeat vibe filled with local and personal touches including artwork by Ola Volo.
So far, Doan’s has a nice mix of four different style brews. Right away, you may notice Doan’s pouring full 20oz (imperial) pints in addition to 10oz glasses and 4oz tasters. To my knowledge, full pints are not readily available at any of the other local craft brewery tasting rooms.
1) The Kölsch is quite refreshing, easy drinking, and tasty going down. It’s golden colour and really crisp taste makes it a winner.
2) Doan’s German IPA is rather crispy and easy drinking but still flavourful with a nice hop to it.
3) The rye IPA is smooth, refreshing, and fairly light on its whisky hoppiness.
4) I’m a sucker for a good Düsseldorf style brown ale and their altbier is a suitably full-​bodied one with a nice dark copper complexion. It’s easily my favourite of the bunch with its bold but mild flavour (and tends to sell out before the end of day).
Doan’s is already charming and very promising with its small but intriguing array of beers. Better hop to it.

As of the time of writing, the newest craft beer place to pop up. Unlike the previous inhabitants (Powell Street Brewing), this one has a tasting room. Beautiful.
Parking is available along Powell, as well as the side streets.
The place is so new that it smells like a construction site (lumber). The inside is a bit sterile, but I’m sure that will change as they add decorations to the place. There is seating for maybe 15 – 20 guests.
Because they are so new, they only have 3 brews available. In other words, not enough selection to even make a flight. My personal favourite was the altbier, but nothing really stuck out to be honest. Not going to fault the establishment though — it’s definitely not easy opening a microbrewery. I’ll be back in a few month to re-​evaluate.
Here’s to a successful venture down the road.

Doan’s has taken over the old Powell Street Brewing location and is a welcome addition to the many breweries in this area.
It’s another great location if you are on a growler fill run, on a bike ride beer drinking tour, or just hanging out in the area. For transit takers, it’s minimal walking from the nearest bus stop.
They are currently producing three ales. Kolsch for those who prefer the crisp lighter beers, rye ipa for those who like the higher bitter hoppiness, and an altbier for those who like a darker yet crisp ale.
The space is small but bright and cheery with friendly staff.
Due to the limited space, I’m not sure how much they can produce at one time, but I really look forward to all the beer styles they come out with in the future.

Great brews, great space, great neighbourhood. Doan hesitate to stop by and drink yourself silly.
