DD Mau

Loved the store design and the food + excellent customer service.

The only thing preventing me from giving this place a 5 star rating is the price. The Banh Mi is delicious, but definitely the most expensive I have ever had. I’ve been told that $ 3.50-$ 4 is the average price around town for Banh Mi… but of course real estate is more expensive downtown then across the bridge, so I understand that it’s more expensive. But at around double the price the value isn’t great.
That being said, it’s SOOO good and I can’t help but go back. And at the end of the day a filling lunch for less than $ 10 is still pretty damn good.

Really delicious vermicelli bowls. The chicken and pork is the consensus favourite among my colleagues.
To avoid the wait, get their extremely user friendly app on the play store (android) or app store (iphones). Pay ahead of time on the app and have your food ready for you when you get to the store.
Excellent customer service. Staff always have a smile on their faces and will make conversation with you (when it’s not busy).

Tried this place for the first time today heard about it from a colleague.
The restaurant is small but well decorated and has about 12 – 15 seats.
The sandwich was good, I had the lemongrass chicken — the only thing I didnt’ like was too much of the white sauce (I think it’s mayo) not really sure but the pickled veggies weren’t as pickled as other places. I guess they’re trying to cater to the general population. Portion was good, they cut the sub in half for you too so that’s convenient.
I’ll probably be back to try a rice bowl, saw a couple of people working on theirs when I was in they looked pretty good.

This is my second time here, and I love their subs! The only one I have tried is the lemon grass chicken. I have also tried their shrimp salad rolls. AND IT IS GOOD! I was not aware that they have noodles and soup there but I will DEF go back and try that out because it looks so so good. The only downfall is that it is pretty small and usually all the seats are taken ! Other than that it is delicious !

DD Mau’s Banh Mi at $ 4 for half sandwich is the most expensive banh mi I ever ate. For that price, I did expect a lot more.
The Classic and Grilled Lemongrass Chicken were not bad but just overpriced. The ingredients though really fresh and quite tasty.
Service is friendly. The interior is nice and hip. But if you don’t mind paying for this more fusion Vietnamese food experience, then you would enjoyed DD Mau.

They caught me with the thai iced tea, looks a little rusty in color, but I swear it’s good.
Paired with the lemongrass chicken banh mi and you’re set.
I was able to make an order over the phone and have it delivered to Mysekai next door while I was having my hair done!

There are a few other places in the city for great banh mi, but for Yaletown, this isn’t too shabby! I much prefer DD Mau over Ba Le on Main St.

For a while I lamented not enough places t get a quick bite in Yaletown (a place I think is over-​rated but has such huge potential). Now it seems there are a few and DD Mau is a neat little place with super friendly people running it.
I was really excited from the reviews I read but personally found the sandwiches small and only «good». We had minuscule spring rolls, and one small sandwich for slightly more than we should have paid. We had the BBQ pork but I detected not of the crunchy bits other people mentioned.
I’d go back,. it is «a-​ok» as Unilocal words it, but I plan my day around it.

I didn’t go into this joint, but take away was brought to me:) tried the ginger beef sub, the chicken sub and lastly the salad rolls. To make the sandwhices on a multigrain bun is +.25 for a half and +.50 for a full banh mi.
So good, I didn’t order these buns but man was the meat hearty. Adding more meat is an potion here.
My mouth was dancing (in addition to my chair dancing) when I ate their sandwiches and the salad roll sauce. Now I’m drooling while reminiscing about my first DD Mau experience. Meow, DD MAU!

Came into town in the midst of a crazy wind storm, the place I wanted to stop for lunch was not yet open, while Twisted Forks had an hour wait. Instead of wondering the streets in order to kill an hour, we decided to stop here for lunch. The place is cute, and I have been on a mini Bahn-​Mi quest as of late. Just to put it in perspective, we stopped by a cute little Vietnamese deli in Seattle on our way up to Vancouver and tried several bahn-mi’s there. In comparison, this place was pricier and not as good. I totally understand that it is not a fair comparison, i.e. a traditional hole-​in-​the-​wall vs. an artisanal modern take on Vietnamese food, heck they are not even in the same country. However, places like this are dime a dozen in NYC, and this was not particularly good. Here are two dishes what we tried:
BBQ Duck Bahn-​Mi — the duck was so dry and flavorless, even piling on condiments couldn’t save this sandwich, which is sad as duck and bahn-​mi are my two favorite things
Rice Noodle with Pork and Spring Rolls — it was pretty flavorless, but the condiments the restaurant provided really helped to boost the taste. The toppings were not bad, the pork was ok, while the spring rolls were crunchy and had good fillings.
DD Mau was my first meal in Vancouver, and I had high hopes since everyone raved about what a great foodie city Vancouver is. Even though Vancouver ultimately lived up to my expectations with all of the amazing meals I had there, this place was on the bottom of my list.

I think this place deserves their current four star rating so I’m not going to try to swing that downward. But I find their 8pm close too be super annoying. You guys would get business from me fairly regularly if you just stayed open til 9 like every other place around you.
Pork banh mi sandwich is great and shouldn’t be a special. Make it a regular menu item.
Also, give me a special discount for all of these golden free ideas.

Fresh baguettes with choice of assorted Vietnamese cold cuts or lemongrass chicken or BBQ pork or honey farlic beef or tofu with cucumbers and fresh cilantro and jalapeño I if you want. $ 7.5 or $ 4 for half.
Specials are BBQ duck, roasted pork and new menu item phở beef dip.

Dude, this place is called DD Mau. That in itself is frickin cool. Remember that simpsons episode where Bart had principal skinner trying to climb the rope? Thats what DD Mau reminds me of. I ordered the crackling pork sammie with a side of summer rolls (goi cuon/​spring rolls? the non fried ones). Those rolls were nothing special, doubt it was worth the 5 or so bucks. Im waay to blessed to grow up in Lil Saigon. The sammie really shines though. The pork with the crackling skin is amazeballs awesome in so many ways… add a slightly runny fried egg if you really want heaven. Overall great experience… not so sure about the $ 10 sammie when im used to buying 3 and getting 1 free at that price… but heck the organic fresh ingredients are worth it.

This place was so good and they make it all fresh when you order it (not a fast food joint). The restaurant is nice inside and has some tables setup outside too. Street parking.
We got the rice noodle bowl with the pork, beef and egg roll ($ 10.80). It’s delicious and filling. And the honey garlic beef banh mi sandwich ($ 7.50).
I am picky about my meat but found their beef and pork to be of good quality and not too stringy or fatty. Also when I first opened my sandwich I thought oh no, carrots… I hate carrots, but I tried it and they are pickled and give it an amazing complimentary flavor. Sorry I doubted it. And the bread is good.
Every time this is a quality meal at good prices. We come here a couple times a week!!!

I love getting the lemon grass tofu in a salad wrap. Its healthy plus delicious. I do admit it gets hard to hold and eat after it starts falling apart but the taste is amazing! Highly recommend to vegetarians!

By the gods these are glorious bánh mì sandwiches!
The meat is tender and juicy, the veggies crisp, and the sauces spicy and liberally applied to the crusty-​outside chewy-​inside baguettes. Basically, wins all around.
The special when I went was a phở beef dip, which was a bánh mì-​ified french dip with phở instead of au jus for dipping. It worked VERY WELL. I barely came up for air between bites.
They also have a killer Vietnamese iced coffee. It’s not an everyday sort of beverage, but if you’re ever in a caffeine valley it’ll be sure to shoot you right back up.

I completely get and understand that places in the richer parts of town charge more for their products than others in less rich parts of town even if it’s not worth it at all but I just can’t get on board with this one.
The pictures look A LOT bigger than what it actually was in person. The baguettes they use are tiny. and I mean TINY. The skinniest little loafs that look like subway bread before they go in the oven lol. Standard veggies and meat that most Banh Mi places have but when all is said and done it costs anywhere from 30−100% more than most Vietnamese sandwich shops.
I’ll say that they do have a couple specialty subs like Duck and roasted pork but even those are highly priced for such a small product. They also offer whole grain bread for .50 cents more which is a plus but it makes your sandwich feel a lot less like a Banh Mi and more like a normal and non-​Vietnamese sub.
I enjoyed the taste of my sandwich but was left feeling a bit empty. I guess I expected a top of the line Banh Mi that would blow every other place out of the water but that didn’t happen. It’s average at best and I don’t see a reason i’d want this place over Bale or Au Petit Café.

After emptying my lunch I learnt the hard way that I clearly underpacked. Not wanting something too heavy for my lunch part 2, I decided to walk myself over to DD Mau after seeing the solid 4 star ratings on Unilocal,with the occasional subpar reviews.
I came in around 1:40PM. I was wanting a half order of BBQ duck banh mi but it unfortunately comes only in full order. Such trepidation did not irritate me. There was no line up. I assume the lunch rush was over by then. I promptly went up to the young Asian female cashier who seemed to be in training and placed my order — 1 BBQ Duck Sandwich… Add Pâté, total came to $ 12.92.
I don’t know about you but charging almost $ 13 for a banh mi is steep. Let me try this one more time, it is «STEEP»! I did my best to silence my expectation and anticipation but deep inside I was skittish. Not long after I was hopping out the shop with a 6 inch in my hand.
I was enraptured by the sight of the warm thick sandwich. I picked up half and carefully cupped my lips around the circumference, after giving it a gentle squeeze. I ambitiously attempted to eat it from different angels by positioning my head in awkward positions that my chiropractor would disapprove.
The bread was not light and airy as I anticipated. It was on the dense side, though the bread still tasted fresh. I immediately felt a caustic burn after my first swallow, de-​seeded jalapeño, yes, of course. The sultry coarseness of the pâté caressed my tongue. I was glad I got the add on but the amount was not enough to satisfy me. The duck meat, was surprisingly tender but light in flavor and seasoning. The pickled daikon carrots and scallions contributed to tickling my taste buds.
There is no doubt this was a well put together banh mi with a contemporary spin. I gorged down half the sandwich and may have deep throated it a couple of times along the way. Having said that I question the shop’s striving effort to emulate local competitors. It was good, but not $ 13 good.

Delicious! I had the two item noodle bowl with chicken and spring rolls. My partner had one as well with chicken and duck.
Restaurant is tiny with just a couple tables and seating along the window, and is in a very cool neighbourhood in a great location.

They have my favorite Banh Mi around Yaletown. Honey-​Garlic Beef Dip Banh Mi with Multigrain baguette is so good! BBQ pork is pretty good too. I usually have the full size, because I think the small one is not enough for a lunch.
Love the staff as well. I don’t know their names, but they all know my name and what I usually order. That’s so lovely!
