The(newer) designer, Katrina, was so knowledgeable & helpful — she must have gotten sick of seeing me time and time again after my failed attempts of grey & colour selections(they would look so good when we picked them in store — and then terrible in my house) I finally bite the bullet and scheduled the in-home design consultation. The colours we ended up with were nothing like what I was choosing, but she explained the reasoning for what she choose. It out so good! Its exactly what I wanted but couldn’t do on my own, I’m just thrilled with the end result.

I was in the hood and they were open and I walked in. I was going to deal with my painting issue down the road, however, since they were there I might as well have gotten on thing off my bucket list this quarter. I came in here to get a quick consultation and take home some paint strip samples since my townhouse needs to have a paint job pre-mature of what the co-op is willing to pay for it, however, I want to paint my existing bedroom wall to the co-op standard color and color that is approved. I gathered some samples so that at the next board of directors they can give me a color approval.

Benjamin Moore sells in-home colour consultations for $ 150 with some of the money credited back if I bought paint($ 25). We were hesitant to use the service but did so in the end thinking we’d potentially get good value and help finalizing our interior. Hired the colour consultant thinking I was getting a BM employee but instead got some gal billing herself as a «decorator» with a proprietary business card that said so.(FYI — in B.C. ANYONE can bill themselves as a decorator or designer with little to know education or industry regluation). I think the colour consultation process is an expensive joke and I DONOT recommend it at all. You’d be better off hiring a bona fide interior designer for an hour or two. We are highly unimpressed and feel misled. As it turned out, the«consultant» asked for $ 225 because she stayed two hours… a-w-k-w-a-r-d doesn’t even begin to describe the moment she stated her fee. Why should we pay an extra for questionable value? We did not ask for more time or were told in advance that we’d be charged extra. TIP: My friend hired a paint consultant out of the Kerrisdale location and was only charged $ 60 an hour… recently too. She got two hours for $ 120 and this person took lots of time to show a range of colours. Please don’t make the mistake we did — be clear that you are only paying $ 150. We don’t have a big place, didn’t spend a lot of time on the rooms, and she didn’t show us much of anything or articulate very impressively her reasoning for one colour over the other. It is almost as if she was going through the motions and picked the safest popular colours that all the designers use in magazines, etc. There wasn’t much consultation at all. When we asked for a couple of colour chips or boards to keep to see how the colours would look, we were told it would cost $ 9 a board. Then, in an arrogant tone, the colour consultant says, «I don’t really do boards; to be honest, that’s why people hire me – to tell them what will work so that they don’t need to try different colours on boards.» On a related note: We hired an excellent painter and he cant stand Benjamin Moore(he’s not impressed with the company and said the paint is sh#t…over priced for what you’re getting) and really encouraged us to consider Sherwin Williams instead. We’re getting our colours mixed there now.

This is a small store but if they don’t have what you need they’ll order it in. Michelle took care of me and called me the next day to say my silver spray paint was in. As I’ve needed several items while giving my daughter a bedroom makeover and this store’s close to work I’ve been in a few times. Michelle’s been really helpful with suggestions for what I needed. I’d way rather go here than Home Depot!
