History
Established in 1960.
Formerly named the O’Keefe Centre (1960 – 1996) and the Hummingbird Centre (1996 – 2007), the Sony Centre, Toronto’s first performing arts centre, has played a defining role in the cultural life of Toronto for more than 50 years.
The theatre, designated a heritage building by the City of Toronto, underwent renovations in 2008 – 2009 to restore its iconic features such as the marquee canopy and York Wilson’s lobby mural, The Seven Lively Arts. Following two years of renovations and restoration work, the Sony Centre reopened its doors on 1 October 2010, fifty years to the date of the first opening night performance.
The Sony Centre is the former home of the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada, and has played host to a variety of international attractions and stars.
Today, the Sony Centre’s mission is to unite the global citizens of Toronto through great artistic experiences.
