Loved Redbox and it’s lower rental prices for new releases, was a great alternative to streaming. Really sad that they folded in Canada, like most of the U.S. business. Now I have to continue my business once again Downtown Toronto at Queen Video.

Love their concept, basically replacing the whole Blockbuster Video concept in one small vending machine-like: without paying for an entire store rent. Talk about maximizing the industry standard, sales per square foot that commercial realtors love to talk about but I digress. For just a few bucks a day, you can even rent fairly new releases. And with so many convenient locations since I’ve actually been to them, plus the fact that I use it, it’s easy to find a place to drop off too. Safeway, Superstore, 7 Eleven, and Mac’s. Easy to register, all by email. And it’s amazing how quick it is: once you’ve picked up your DVD, by the time you walk back to your car, you receive their confirmation email. That’s what happens when you know how the system works ;) the only bugger is when someone’s taking too long to scroll through the list but they do sort by categories.

I am still one of those people whom rents movies. With the vanishing stores that are happening a dime a dozen and rapid numbers around the lower mainland I am still happy that there is somewhere to rent movies. I miss that personal human touch, that interaction and geek talk about movies. The Redbox doesn’t talk to you but it’s a fine medium between the traditional stores and downloading. Here is the problem. Redbox recently become another one of those victims and as of last year, Redbox kiosks in Canada are no longer renting out movies. This is a shame ’cause even though the selection was limited by my interest and standards, they had the latest titles in a timely fashion. In fact it was the RedBox that caught me up with all my Oscar movies before the big ceremony. Even though I cannot rent in Canada anymore. I am still giving it 4 stars as it was an awesome alternative.
